Ray is a 2004 biographical film focusing on 30 years of the life of rhythm and blues musician Ray Charles. The independently produced film was directed by Taylor Hackford and starred Jamie Foxx in the title role; Foxx received an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance.
Charles was set to attend an opening of the completed film, but he died of liver disease in June, several months before its premiere.
Raised on a sharecropping plantation in Northern Florida, Ray Charles Robinson went blind at the age of seven, shortly after witnessing his younger brother's death. Inspired by a fiercely independent mother who insisted he make his own way in the world, Charles found his calling and his gift behind a piano keyboard. Touring across the Southern musical circuit, the soulful singer gained a reputation and then exploded with worldwide fame when he pioneered incorporating gospel, country, jazz and orchestral influences into his inimitable style.
As he revolutionized the way people appreciated music, he simultaneously fought segregation in the very clubs that launched him and championed artists’ rights within the corporate music business. The movie provides a portrait of Charles’ musical genius as he overcomes heroin addiction while transforming into one of his country’s most beloved performers.
Ray, as of today
I can't say
Things will ever be the same
And that could be a shame
'Cause, though
I think I know
Another lonely exile when I see one
And you appear to be one
Still ?
I'm playing down 'cause I could really be found
If you've got it to spare
I'm playing it cool but it's terribly cruel
'Cause I ought to be there
And Ray, what can I say
You don't know me
And it's just wishful thinking
To keep myself from sinking
And hence no evidence
To support any theory I have handy
That you could understand me
And so ?
I'm playing down 'cause I could really be found
If you've got it to spare
I'm playing it cool but it's terribly cruel
'Cause I ought to be there
'Cause you're as bad off as me
And Ray, can we repay
Ourselves for days that we've lost
Through indecision
With one of recognition
If so, then here I go
'Cause some things you know
And some you just believe in
And hope it comes even
Oh ?
I'm playing down 'cause I could really be found
If you've got it to spare
I'm playing it cool but it's terribly cruel
'Cause I ought to be there
I ought to be there
Hey, what the hell do you want me to do? Hey, does it
look like I'm static to you? Well, you might look twice
cause I'm moving.
OK, you see that I can walk which is good, but still you're
trying to make me talk like you would. Your intention's
nice, you're improving.
For all you know you're doing fine, but I guess it shows
shows that even jewelry that's fake do shine.
So shut your mouth now big boy, I'm just myself not your
toy. It's in my nature to be changing.
Now is it so hard to see? You can not make me to be
someone who never will be changing.
So what the hell do you want me to say? Another halting
rhyme, another cliche. Well, you might be right this one
time. You take for granted I'm your servant subdued. It
doesn't make sense to me, but to you. So here's one
last bright make shift rhyme.
For all you know I'm just a fool, but I guess that shows
that you can not judge the dog just by it's drool.
I'm losing you for a big smile on my face. You're nothing
new and not hard to replace. I'm losing you but I'm not
losing ground.
So Peekaboo! And you won't be around.
Cause I change with time and that's not a crime.
Someone like you can not derange me. Yeah, I change
with time and that's not a crime.
Sometimes I sit and think about yesterday... of all those simple words that I didn't even say. I just sit back and wonder why... (wonder why...) ...everything is just bought and sold, and why everyone listens to what they're told. No matter what you do you'll never get ahead and to everyone else you're just better off dead! Sometimes I sit and watch you on T.V. and I just think about how cruel it would be... to call your family at a quarter til' four. "Ray doesn't live here anymore..." (anymore...) Ray is on her own
Oh it's not a different day
Ray is on her own
It's a hot and sunny day
I believe in ghosts
I believe in silver and the crown
I believe in love
and there's not a lot of that around
Kiss the world, kiss goodbye
Mother Nature's on your side
You're a saint and you're a sinner
oh I don't, I don't want anybody
no I don't, I don't want anybody
Ray is on her own
Oh it's not a different day
Ray is on her own
It's a hot and sunny day
We believe in stars
We believe in systems and the day
We believe in love
But Ray, she never even had the
strength to stay
Ray, come out of the dark
Close your mouth, it's my turn to talk
Ray don't be so cool
That you can't - let yourself just fall
Ray, hope comes in strange shapes
When you don't expect it
Ray, hope comes in strange shapes
Wouldn't you say it's time for you?
You say that all the good has gone
If you stay, I'll try to prove you wrong
And when it hurts too much, to stand in the queue
Go on, Ray, I'll save a place for you
Dead leaves in the wind are burning
Like a dial on a radio you're turning
Ray, wouldn't you say?
Night, night, night invites light
Entering air, opens a line
Blue, blue, blue shapes in red
Cristals the space, stars fall to sleep
Sun up-set, the moon melts down
Breeze, breeze, breezes awake
Plays with a beam, paints the scene
It's green, green, green is the grass
Covered by pearls
A web splits the light into a glance
Sun up-set, the moon melts down
Sky high, shadows fall
Drawing the time, for flowers to bloom
Moon, moon, moon fo away
Down to the land opened for eyes
To see in deep, deep darkness,
Covers a skin, touched by a hand.
Sun up-set, the moon melts down
It is alway great to hear
blues man Ray singing
The way that he cries out his soul
always more than music
Piano sings the chors so easy
and Ray
His vocal help the blues survive
who will forgoet? Georgia on my mind?
For me the greatest voice alive
that is black man Ray
Piano sings the chors so easy
and Ray plays anything
Piano sings the chors so easy
and Ray keeps on groovin?
Ray keeps on groovin?
Ray keeps on groovin?
Ray keeps on groovin?
He has a heart that? s big enough
to hold all the people
This music a reflection of
what isw on his mind
Piano sings the chors so easy
