4. SOUNDBITE (English) Nicholas Burns, US Undersecretary of State:
"The problem we've had with Syria is the same problem that France has had, and that Britain has had, and Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. And that is that the Syrian government of President Assad has turned away from supporting the Middle East peace process."
5. Wide of stage
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Nicholas Burns, US Undersecretary of State:
"Syria has been a central actor in providing arms to Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, a major reason why there was a war between Israel and Lebanon this past summer along the Israeli- Lebanese border. And Syria cannot kick the habit of intrusive and malevolent involvement in the affairs of Lebanon itself."
7. Mid of audience member asking question
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Nicholas Burns, U.S. Undersecretary of State:
"We've adopted the same strategy as Egypt and France and Saudi Arabia and nearly all of the European Union. And that is to put Syria in the deep freeze for the past year, and to consciously try to isolate Syria so that they get the message, they're not going to derive the benefits of a normal political or economic relationship with the Sunni Arab states in the Middle East, or with the European Union states or with the United States as long as they continue to be part of the nexus of terrorism, along with Iran, in supporting those major Middle East terrorist groups that have such a negative effect on Israel, the Palestinians and on Lebanon itself."
9. Burns and moderator on stage
STORYLINE:
US Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns said Washington's problem with Syria is not a lack of communication between the two governments, but what he termed as Syria's habit of dabbling in "terrorist" activities throughout the Middle East.
At an event hosted by the New York City Asia Society on Monday, which focused on the US relationships with South East Asian Countries, Burns said Washington's isolation of Syria has put the country "in the deep freeze."
"They're not going to derive the benefits of a normal political or economic relationship with the Sunni Arab states in the Middle East, or with the European Union states or with the United States as long as they continue to be part of the nexus of terrorism, along with Iran, in supporting those major Middle East terrorist groups that have such a negative effect on Israel, the Palestinians and on Lebanon, " he said.
The US has had a problematic relationship with Damascus in recent years, with Washington accusing Syria of trying to undermine the Lebanese government of Prime Minister Fuad Saniora, which is dominated by opponents of Syria, whilst Damascus accuses Washington of a huge bias towards Israel, as an uneven-handed broker in the Middle East conflict, as well as sowing destruction and anarchy in Iraq as the lead occupying force.
Relations with Syria have worsened, Burns said, in part because Damascus "cannot kick the habit of intrusive and malevolent involvement" in Lebanon.
He pointed out that all of the victims of political assassinations in Lebanon over the last two years have been part of the anti-Syrian movement, including the slaying of Pierre Gemayel last week.
Gemayel was the sixth anti-Syrian figure killed in Lebanon in two years and was the first since Gibran Tueni, a prominent anti-Syrian newspaper editor and lawmaker who was killed in a car bomb in December 2005.
Damascus' opponents in Lebanon have accused Syria of being behind previous assassinations, particularly that of Rafik Hariri, who was killed in a bombing in Beirut in February 2005, but Syria denies these claims.

Travel video about destination Damascus in Syria.
Damascus is the capital of Syria and is a symbol of culture in the Near East. A hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast, the strategically located city was once the capital of the Umayyad.Cannons, the busts of various presidents and military vehicles are displayed in the large courtyard of the Takiyeh Mosque, an ancient Dervish monastery complex. Built in 1554 and designed by Ottoman master architect, Sinan, it also includes an adjoining inn for the numerous pilgrims who travelled to Mecca. Damascus has always been much prized: by the pharaohs and the Babylonian monarch, Nebukadnezar, and later, Alexander The Great. Then came Persian, Roman and Islamic emperors followed by the Crusaders and Mongols. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls. It was from here that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Romans built a fort here that was constantly extended with impressive walls and towers and located directly outside the city wall, the River Barada was also of strategic importance. Although the Mongols destroyed the inner buildings, the fortress walls survived. The Suq is an important part of every Islamic city, a market that originated in ancient times. Thousands of shops in numerous interconnected lanes form the commercial heart of Damascus. In the Gold Suq everything glitters, bracelets, rings and even a large variety of kitchen utensils. Damascus has for thousands of years been a place desired by the powerful. Yet it has managed to survive and is still the most beautiful capital city in the Near East.

Travel video about destination Railroad to Damascus in Turkey.
This extraordinary journey begins in Istanbul, golden gateway to the Orient and a city that was once the centre of the Old World, as reflected by its long history. The Turkish metropolis once had sonorous names such as Constantinople and Byzanz. This gateway between Europe and Asia is not only the biggest city in Turkey, but also a melting pot of various cultures. In 1453, the Hagia Sofia, one of the world’s most extraordinary churches, was transformed into a mosque by Sultan Mehmet and is now an impressive museum. The Grand Basare is a city within a city and through a large gate there is a labyrinth of corridors that were built over many centuries. On the magnificent banks of the Bosporus the Dolmabahce Palace shines out, the city’s third largest sultan’s palace. Istanbul’s regal buildings are the most beautiful legacy of Osmanic architecture. Next, a train journey from Istanbul to Damascus. The train slowly leaves Istanbul and travels into the night, our destination being the capital of Syria that is around three thousand kilometres away. Cappadocia in Anatolia is known for some of the largest and most beautiful fairy chimneys – a name given to its strange rock formations - in Cappadocia the sight of which was surely much appreciated by the first religious hermits who settled here inside the actual tuff cones. We eventually arrive in Damascus, capital of Syria and symbol of culture in the Near East, a veritable ‘paradise on earth’ situated a hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast. The train journey from Istanbul to Damascus has been tantamount to being a journey through the centuries. Slow, tranquil and intriguingly informative!

The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls and it was from there that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Khan As´Ad Pasha is often referred to as being the most beautiful caravansary in the Near East. Its inner courtyard is covered by eight mighty and partly painted cupolas each of which is supported by four pillars. Set amid the desert savannah of Syria are the proud remains of a unique and mysterious metropolis, Palmyra, a legendary ancient city that was built due to the existence of the Tadmur Oasis. The shortest and fastest route from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia and Persia travels directly past the Tadmur Oasis thus it was only a question of time until an important trading post was founded there. Around a quarter of a million Bedouins live in Syria’s desert areas. They are nomads who speak Arabic and belong to the Muslim faith and their income is derived from sheep, goats and camels which produce both milk and meat. They travel the desert accompanied by their animals. Further north on the edge of the fertile Al Ghab Ditch is the ancient metropolis of Apameia, one of the most beautiful cities in the Near East. Apart from Bosra and Palmyra this huge city of ruins is one of the most important Hellenist regions in Syria. Syria is the Pearl Of The East. With deserts, wadis and mountains, castles and crusader fortresses, Roman ruins, palaces and mosques. A legendary country between both past and future whose cultural treasures still survive today.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this "calling" in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, "glide" over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and "see" the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest. Its capital Damascus is among the oldest continuously-inhabited cities in the world. A country of fertile plains, high mountains, and deserts, it is home to diverse ethnic and religious groups, including the Arab, Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians, Kurds, Circassians, Mhallami, Mandeans and Turks. Religious groups include Sunni, Christians, Alawite, Druze religion, Mandeanism and Yezidi. Sunni Arabs make up the largest population group in Syria.
In English, the name "Syria" was formerly synonymous with the Levant (known in Arabic as al-Sham) while the modern state encompasses the sites of several ancient kingdoms and empires, including the Eblan civilization of the 3rd millennium BC. In the Islamic era, Damascus was the seat of the Umayyad Caliphate and a provincial capital of the Mamluk Sultanate in Egypt.
The modern Syrian state was established after World War I as a French mandate, and represented the largest Arab state to emerge from the formerly Ottoman-ruled Arab Levant. It gained independence in April 1946, as a parliamentary republic. The post-independence period was tumultuous, and a large number of military coups and coup attempts shook the country in the period 1949–1971. Between 1958-61, Syria entered a brief union with Egypt, which was terminated by a military coup. The Arab Republic of Syria came into being in 1963, transforming from the Republic of Syria in the Ba'athist coup d'état. Syria was under Emergency Law from 1963 to 2011, effectively suspending most constitutional protections for citizens, and its system of government is considered to be non-democratic. Bashar al-Assad has been president since 2000 and was preceded by his father Hafez al-Assad, who was in office from 1970 to 2000.

Entry from: Damascus, Syria
Entry Title: "Beautiful Damascas"
Entry:
"Jeannie here. Our time in Damascus has been too brief! We arrived on Friday - the holy day - so our fantastic guide arranged for us to visit a mosque that has an attached cultural center. We met with local and western Muslims to discuss their beliefs and their lives as Muslims. It was a fascinating experience. As we have traveled through Syria, I have become increasingly bothered by my role as a woman here. Because my hair is not covered, I am either treated as an object by men or scorned by women - or completely ignored. I know that I have reacted in a typically western way, but by this point I was looking for personal interaction with women to see how they feel about their lifestyle and their roles in society. To enter the mosque we had to part from the men in our group, wear hooded cloaks, and use separate entrances and rooms to hear the sermon. We then met as a mixed group, but the men were on one side and the women were on the other. The Muslim women did not speak often during our dialogue, so I was extremely interested to see what they would say during our segregated lunch. We all moved downstairs to have lunch, but the women passed through the dining hall and into a small corner room to wait. We could hear the men in the hall eating and talking, but we apparently were waiting for our separate table to be made ready? I asked why we were separated from the men for the meal, and the women replied that it was more comfortable for them in social settings to meet as women apart from the men, but also that Allah asks it. With more discussion, we realized that women and men do not really have the opportunity to socialize outside of their families. In fact, many young people have to rely on their relatives of the opposite gender to find suitable mates for them because they have so little access. The limited realm of women's daily lives include their husbands, children, and female relatives living nearby. They shop in the morning, and then stay in the home most of the day. It they wish to socialize, it must be in someone's home. At weddings, the women celebrate together, apart from the men's celebrations. We were told that women can work if they wish to, but that it is often an overwhelming prospect because of their considerable duties in the home. Rather than seeing the housework as difficult, the women told us that they were well taken care of by their hardworking husbands and that they felt they had considerable domestic power. Leaving the mosque, I felt a little less open-minded than when we arrived in Syria, but at the same time I realized I was as incapable of setting aside my own cultural beliefs about equality and women's roles as the women I met were. Back to Damascus... It really is a lovely city. We enjoyed the National Museum, visiting the handicraft souq (beautiful woodcarvings and inlay work), the main souqs and the mosque. Our guide took us to the Palace of Culture one night after hours (with a little bribe) to see and smell an elegant old courtyard planted in orange trees and snapdragons with beautiful woodworking and decorations. It was the kind of place you want to visit daily to restore a sense of tranquility. I had a small adventure with three other women on the tour when we decided to find a beauty salon. We had some trouble finding a place, and then we found that hairstylist Tony was liberal in his interpretation of one inch, but there were no tears. We feel we could have spent another day here easily - wandering the side streets and enjoying more tea, but Jordan awaits us."

I walked the alley and found an unusual cafe. It is the story cafe. The storyteller is telling the old story cafe. Gore Syrian people to read because they can not understand even more, but people cheer and rejoice. Is it because the atmosphere ... Tourists are easy to indulge in their own Arabian Nights. Tip Trays, laid down in the story is chidatneun towards the climax. "Already I came in third place, very unique. It's one of the places you should see just once and you come to Syria. You can get a feeling of antiquity as if to return. It likes on very old Medina. I'll be a unique and interesting experience. "Finally, my travel story cafe out the end of the night Damascus also goes deeper.

This is a powerful story about how our brains define us and connect us to the world

*** Al-Ghazali, a major philosopher and theologian of the late 11th century was born in Persia, and was one of the most prominent intellectuals of his age, working in such centres of learning as Baghdad, Damascus and Jerusalem. He is now seen as a key figure in the development of Islamic thought, not just refining the theology of Islam but also building on the existing philosophical tradition inherited from the ancient Greeks. ***

http://www.ted.com Neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor had an opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: One morning, she realized she was having a massive stroke. As it happened -- as she felt her brain functions slip away one by one, speech, movement, understanding -- she studied and remembered every moment. This is a powerful story about how our brains define us and connect us to the world and to one another.
