Bengaluru: The results of the byelections to two Lok Sabha constituencies-- Bangalore rural and Mandya-- are crucial for two arch rivals, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and former PM Deve Gowda.
The counting of votes is underway and the result will be declared by noon. For Siddaramaiah, it is a litmus test as it would decide how powerful he is in the state and the win will ensure he has a better say in general elections too.
For Gowda, the victory would pave way for future prospects for JD(S) in the state. Both Bangalore Rural and Mandya Lok Sabha seats are dominated by Vokkaligas and were held by the JD(S).
Deve Gowda's son Kumaraswamy has fielded his wife Anitha from Bangalore Rural against DK Suresh, younger brother of Congress strongman DK Shivakumar.
In Mandya, the Congress has fielded actress Ramya against C S Puttaraju of JD(S). Ramya lost her foster father RT Narayan on the day of her nomination and the JD(S) fears that might have created a big sympathy wave for her.
JD(S) hasn't left any stone unturned to bag the two seats. It has entered into an alliance with BJP. The tie-up is said to be a temporary one and limited to the bypoll.
