Allen Barra is an American journalist and author of a number of sports books. He is a contributing editor of American Heritage magazine, and regularly writes about sports for the Wall Street Journal. He has also written for the New York Times and New York Observer, and was formerly a columnist for Salon.com. He currently blogs on sports for the Village Voice website.

His 2009 book on Yogi Berra, Yogi Berra: Eternal Yankee, was praised as "sturdy," "well-written," and "thorough" by the San Francisco Chronicle, but the New York Times thought it too enthralled with its subject.

Barra was one of the few sportswriters to agree with Rush Limbaugh that Donovan McNabb was overrated because of his race .

In 2009 he was the target of a widely-read critique at the website Deadspin, which targeted Barra's subjective adoration for Derek Jeter.

The island of Barra (Scottish Gaelic: Barraigh, Eilean Bharraigh, pronounced [ˈparˠaj, ˈelan ˈvarˠaj]) is a predominantly Gaelic-speaking island, and apart from the adjacent island of Vatersay, to which it is connected by a causeway, is the southernmost inhabited island of the Outer Hebrides (Na h-Eileanan Siar) in Scotland.

The 2001 census showed that the resident population was 1,078 (1,172 including Vatersay). The area of Barra is roughly 60 square kilometres (23 sq mi), the main village being Castlebay (Bàgh a' Chaisteil).

The west of the island has white sandy beaches backed by shell-sand machair and the east has numerous rocky inlets.

Kisimul Castle at Castlebay is located on an island in the bay, so giving the village its name. The highest elevation on the island is Heaval, halfway up which is "Our Lady of the Sea" a prominent white marble statue of the Madonna and Child. Other places of interest on the island include a ruined church and museum at Cille Bharra, a number of Iron Age brochs such as those at Dùn Chuidhir and An Dùn Bàn and a range of other Iron Age and later structures which have recently been excavated and recorded.

Ryan Allen is an American bass singer known for his operatic character roles. He debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in 1993 as Hans Foltz in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg by Richard Wagner.
