Texas student's refusal to say Mexican pledge
Texas student's refusal to say Mexican pledge. Texas - Every day students in Texas public schools pledge allegiance to the flags of the United States and Texas. But when a teacher in a Rio Grande Valley high school assigned students to stand and pledge allegiance to the Mexican flag and sing Mexico's national anthem, one student refused. The resulting controversy has one East Texas lawmaker wanting changes in the state's curriculum on how culture and patriotism are taught in schools. 15-year-old Brenda Brinsdon entered her sophomore year at McAllen ISD's Achieve Early College High School just wanting to do well in her classes. But in mid-September she got an unexpected lesson on personal conviction and taking on the system. "I feel that I did what's right," Brinsdon said. "And I know what I did what's right [...] I'm going to stand my ground." Brinsdon said she stood her ground by staying seated when first-year Spanish 3 teacher Reyna Santos assigned her class to stand and recite Mexico's pledge of allegiance. Students stood with right arms straight out and palms down, which is how the school district says Mexicans say their pledge.- published: 16 Nov 2012

Texas plans to execute Mexican citizen, creating international furor
Texas plans to execute a Mexican citizen on Wednesday, creating a diplomatic standoff between the US and Mexico. Edgar Tamayo was convicted in the shooting death of a Houston police officer in 1994. US Secretary of State John Kerry, Mexican authorities and a former Texas governor are asking current Gov. Rick Perry (R-Texas) for a temporary stay to sort things out. In 2004, the International Court of Justice handed down the Avena Judgment, which said the US had to review execution sentences of 51 Mexicans. Tamayo would be the third Mexican national executed since that ruling. RT's Meghan Lopez talks to Richard Dieter, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, about the international debate caused by this case, including any effect an execution would have on Americans in legal trouble abroad. Could do with a bit of a set- up, unless you like chunky strings and relatively high action? i used to play this on tour in a band called electrasy. Mexican Edgar Tamayo Execution In Texas
Mexican Citizen Edgar Tamayo Execution The US state of Texas has executed a Mexican for murder, despite objections from the US and Mexican governments. Mexico argued the execution of Edgar Tamayo, 46, would violate international law, because he was not told of his right to seek legal assistance from the Mexican consulate when he was arrested. US Secretary of State John Kerry made the rare move of asking Texas to delay the execution. But it went ahead, after a last minute appeal to the US Supreme Court failed. The execution initially scheduled for 18:00 local time on Wednesday (midnight GMT on Thursday) was delayed as prison officials awaited word from the US Supreme Court over an appeal to keep Tamayo alive. The Supreme Court subsequently announced it had denied a stay of execution. Tamayo declined to make a final statement before he was injected with pentobarbital at Huntsville prison. He was pronounced dead 17 minutes later at 21:32 (03:32 GMT Thursday). The execution was witnessed by the mother and four other relatives of his victim. Tamayo never looked toward Gaddis' mother, two brothers and two other relatives who watched through a window. "He's a coward just like when he shot my brother in the back of the head and he died a coward," Glen Gaddis said. There were several dozen police officers and supporters of the slain patrolman were revving their motorcycles outside of the prison before witnesses were let inside the death chamber. Tamayo selected no witnesses of his own. "A little bit of my shredded heart is feeling better," the officer's mother, Gayle, said. The execution came after the U.S. Supreme Court and lower federal courts rejected last-day appeals and Texas officials spurned arguments that Tamayo's case was tainted because he wasn't informed, under an international agreement, that he could get legal help from the Mexican consulate after his arrest for the officer's slaying.- published: 23 Jan 2014

Officials Protest Texas Plan to Execute Mexican Cop Killer
Officials Protest Texas Plan to Execute Mexican Cop Killer
Mexico says Texas execution of Mexican man would violate international accord. Full Story: Mexico has strongly objected to the scheduled execution in Texas on Wednesday of a Mexican convicted of killing a U.S. police officer. Mexico says the United States will be in "clear violation" of international treaties. Edgar Tamayo was convicted of shooting dead a Houston police officer in 1994 when he was in the United States illegally. But Tamayo was not informed of his right, enshrined in an international treaty known as the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, to diplomatic assistance. In 2004, the United Nations' International Court of Justice ordered the US to reconsider the convictions of 51 Mexicans, who had been sent to death row without being informed of their consular rights. So far, two of that group have been executed; Tamayo would be the third. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has urged Texas Governor Rick Perry to reconsider Tamayo's execution, as it could make it more difficult for the US to help Americans in legal trouble abroad. But so far there has been little sign that Texas is willing to budge. Mexico's foreign ministry says it has taken various measures—legal, diplomatic and political—to try to stay the execution. It includes attempts through Texas courts and petitions from high-ranking Mexicans like Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Meade and Mexico's ambassador to Washington, Eduardo Medina Mora.
