Cotton is a soft, fluffy staple fiber that grows in a boll, or protective capsule, around the seeds of cotton plants of the genus Gossypium. The fiber is almost pure cellulose. The botanical purpose of cotton fiber is to aid in seed dispersal.
The plant is a shrub native to tropical and subtropical regions around the world, including the Americas, Africa, and India. The greatest diversity of wild cotton species is found in Mexico, followed by Australia and Africa. Cotton was independently domesticated in the Old and New Worlds. The English name derives from the Arabic (al) qutn قُطْن, which began to be used circa 1400 AD.
The fiber is most often spun into yarn or thread and used to make a soft, breathable textile. The use of cotton for fabric is known to date to prehistoric times; fragments of cotton fabric dated from 5000 BC have been excavated in Mexico and Pakistan. Although cultivated since antiquity, it was the invention of the cotton gin that so lowered the cost of production that led to its widespread use, and it is the most widely used natural fiber cloth in clothing today.
Tom Cotton (born May 13, 1977) is from the city of Dardanelle, Arkansas. He spent five years serving in the U.S. Army as an infantry officer in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Cotton is the Republican (GOP) nominee running for the United States Congress in Arkansas's 4th congressional district for the 2012 election cycle.
Cotton grew up outside Dardanelle, Arkansas, on his family's cattle farm. After graduating from Dardanelle High School, he went on to attend Harvard College, where he was as a columnist for the Harvard Crimson, played on the junior-varsity basketball team, and was a member of the Harvard Republican Club. He earned a law degree from Harvard Law School.
After completing law school, he served as a federal judicial clerk at the United States Court of Appeal for Judge Jerry Edwin Smith. Moving on to private practice, his work focused on labor, employment, and constitutional law cases at all levels of state and federal court.
In 2004, Cotton enlisted in the U.S. Army as a infantryman. After completing his initial training at Fort Benning, he was deployed in 2006 to Baghdad as a leader of a 41-man air-assault infantry platoon with the 101st Airborne Division. In Iraq, Cotton led daily combat patrols in Al Dora, Abu Dashir, and the surrounding rural sectors outside Baghdad.

If I came back to the land of cotton
Would you love just me?
Old loves lost are never forgotten
That's the way it's supposed to be
Are you short or are you long?
Are you easy to see?
Are you weak or are you strong?
Makes no never to me
All the ballerina sees when her world's on fire
Is where she puts her feet
If she burns her toes, she'll just jump higher
Never skip a beat
I've been good most of the time
Since you last saw me
You come 'cross my mind from time to time
Now look at me
I'm standing at your door with my heart in your hands
Ain't you gonna ask me in?
If you say, "No", I'll understand dear
And never come South again
If I came back to the land of cotton
Would you love just me?
Old loves lost are never forgotten
That's the way it's supposed to be
