Three-peat is a contraction of the words three and repeat, which has been trademarked for commercial use by retired basketball coach Pat Riley; the active trademarks in force are registered under numbers 1552980, 1878690, and 1886018. (A fourth registration, #1977620, expired in 2003.) It is used either as a verb or noun used in American sports to refer to winning a third championship in a row.
In a comedic context, the same play on words, additionally incorporating the name "Pete", is known to have been used as early as 1930 on the radio program "Empire Builders". The episode of that program broadcast on December 29, 1930, featured a trio of singers dubbed "The Three Visiting Firemen: Pete, Re-Pete, and Three-Pete".
The OED credits an Illinois high school senior, Sharif Ford, with the earliest published use of the word in the March 8, 1989 edition of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Ford's quote uses the term in a sporting context and serves to provide a clear etymology as well:
The Lincoln High Tigers say they want to "three-peat". "You know, kind of like repeat, except doing it for the third time," senior Sharif Ford said.

Michael Jeffrey Jordan (born February 17, 1963) is a retired American professional basketball player, active entrepreneur, and majority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats. His biography on the National Basketball Association (NBA) website states, "By acclamation, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time." Jordan was one of the most effectively marketed athletes of his generation and was considered instrumental in popularizing the NBA around the world in the 1980s and 1990s.
After a three-season career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the Tar Heels' national championship team in 1982, Jordan joined the NBA's Chicago Bulls in 1984. He quickly emerged as a league star, entertaining crowds with his prolific scoring. His leaping ability, illustrated by performing slam dunks from the free throw line in slam dunk contests, earned him the nicknames "Air Jordan" and "His Airness". He also gained a reputation for being one of the best defensive players in basketball. In 1991, he won his first NBA championship with the Bulls, and followed that achievement with titles in 1992 and 1993, securing a "three-peat". Although Jordan abruptly retired from basketball at the beginning of the 1993–94 NBA season to pursue a career in baseball, he rejoined the Bulls in 1995 and led them to three additional championships (1996, 1997, and 1998) as well as an NBA-record 72 regular-season wins in the 1995–96 NBA season. Jordan retired for a second time in 1999, but returned for two more NBA seasons from 2001 to 2003 as a member of the Washington Wizards.
The kids were in the living room
Watching cartoons
She could hear 'em laughing from the kitchen
At that big ol' hunter runnin' round
Trying to chase that rabbit down
She just stood there washin' thinkin'
What goes around comes around
There's no doubt
We'll have to answer for the things we've done
When the tables turn and they will turn
Mark my words
It ain't gonna be fun when the rabbit gets the gun
The coffee's still sittin' in the pot
His temper's hot
And she knows he's just lookin' for a reason
As he comes stormin' down the hall
She's wishin' there was a hole to crawl
Into, but there isn't
What goes around comes around
There's no doubt
We'll have to answer for the things we've done
When the tables turn and they will turn
Mark my words
It ain't gonna be fun when the rabbit gets the gun
She stood there without a word
Thinkin' maybe i deserve
All that i've got comin' from him
But when he handed down that verdict
And the whole courtroom heard it
Even the judge himself was smiling
What goes around comes around
There's no doubt
We'll have to answer for the things we've done
When the tables turn and they will turn
Mark my words
It ain't gonna be fun when the rabbit gets the gun
When the tables turn and they will turn
Mark my words
It ain't gonna be fun when the rabbit gets the gun
off and on, off and on, the lights in my head flip off and on,
down below, down below the sweat on my hands is not my own
just put a saddle on me and ride me where want to get
take you to the doctor, girl (??)
and it's spreading and I wanna show you something
and it's hidden over there, right behind the chair
i tried to beat the devil too many times
i'm in love, she is tragic magic
i wanna listen to my evil eye and i pull her down but she won't have it
i wanna know, i wanna know, i wanna know which way to go
before it tramples on me
but the rabbit jumps back in his hole
and forget that i am just like everybody else (everybody else)
hear me out, hear me out, the ape and the blade show fears and doubts
hear me out, hear me out, your sweet little stain just won't wash out
i wanna share our little dreams (??)
and flip you like a ????
life is full of lasers now
and you're spreading when I pop you like a button
honey, where's your child? alligator smile
i tried to beat the devil too many times
i'm in love, she is tragic magic
i wanna listen to my evil eye and i pull her down but she won't have it
i wanna know, i wanna know, i wanna know which way to go
before it tramples on me
but the rabbit jumps back in his hole
and forget that i am just like everybody else (everybody else)
i tried to beat the devil too many times
i'm in love, she is tragic magic
i wanna listen to my evil eye and i pull her down but she won't have it
i wanna know, i wanna know, i wanna know, which way to go
before it tramples on me
but the rabbit jumps back in his hole
