In 1928
Japan'
s Mikio Oda became the first
Asian to win a gold medal when he took the
Olympic title in the Triple Jump at the
Amsterdam Games. In the next four years the
Japanese had taken over the event and established a dynasty of great jumpers. Oda had become the world record holder in the TJ and Chuhei Nambo was the record holder in the
Long Jump finishing third at
Los Angeles with his compatriot
Naoto Tajima in sixth place.
Not surprisingly the
Japanese were favourites to win at Berlin and they had three men in the final -- Tajima, Harada and Oshima. The huge crowd was treated to a wonderful display of technical brilliance and a thrilling contest between Tajima and Harada. The former set a new
World record in duplicating Nambu's 1932 feat of winning the TJ gold medal two days after he had earned the bronze medal in the Long Jump.
Luz Long, silver medallist in the LJ to
Jesse Owens, placed tenth in the Triple Jump.
