Sandakan Travel Video. Sabahs second city lacks the small cosmopolitan pulse that keeps KK throbbing; in contrast, Sandakan feels like a provincial city with provincial horizons, not to mention a grubby city centre.
But Sandakan Travel Video was once a major port of call, and as such it has played an important role in Borneos past, as attested by religious relics, haunting cemeteries and stunning colonial mansions.

Berhala Island (Pulau Berhala in Malay) is a small forested island situated in Sandakan Bay in Sandakan, Sabah, East Malaysia.
The island is approximately 5 hectares in size and has prominent cliffs at its northern end. Many birds of prey can be seen on and around Berhala, including Brahminy Kites, Serpent Eagles and Sea Eagles.
The island has a lighthouse at its highest point.
In the period prior to World War II, the island was used as a quarantine station for labourers coming from China and the Philippines, and was also home to a leper colony. During the war, civilian internees, including Agnes Newton Keith and her husband Harry Keith were held in the quarantine station which served as a makeshift internment camp, before being transferred to Batu Lintang camp in Kuching, Sarawak. After the civilians left, POWs were interned in the camp. A daring escape took place from Berhala Island in June 1943, when several POWs who were due to be transferred to Sandakan POW camp managed to escape to Tawi-Tawi in the Philippines.
Plans are currently in development to promote Berhala Island as a tourist attraction.

Parishes welcome these new members through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) and at a liturgy bringing men and women into full communion with the Catholic Church.

Berhala Island - Tourist Attractions in Malaysia
Berhala Island - Tourist Attractions in Malaysia
Berhala Island (Pulau Berhala in Malay) is a small forested island situated in Sandakan Bay in Sandakan, Sabah, East Malaysia. The island is approximately 5 hectares in size and has prominent cliffs at its northern end. Many birds of prey can be seen on and around Berhala, including Brahminy Kites, Serpent Eagles and Sea Eagles. The island has a lighthouse at its highest point. In the period prior to World War II, the island was used as a quarantine station for labourers coming from China and the Philippines, and was also home to a leper colony. During the war, civilian internees, including Agnes Newton Keith and her husband Harry Keith were held in the quarantine station which served as a makeshift internment camp, before being transferred to Batu Lintang camp in Kuching, Sarawak. After the civilians left, POWs were interned in the camp. A daring escape took place from Berhala Island in June 1943, when several POWs who were due to be transferred to Sandakan POW camp managed to escape to Tawi-Tawi in the Philippines. Plans are currently in development to promote Berhala Island as a tourist attraction.- published: 11 Jun 2014

Sandakan is the second-largest city in Sabah, East Malaysia, on the north-eastern coast of Borneo. It is located on the east coast of the island. It is the administrative centre of Sandakan Division and was the former capital of British North Borneo. Sandakan is known as the gateway for ecotourism destinations in Sabah, such as the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre, the Rainforest Discovery Centre, Turtle Islands Park, Kinabatangan River and Gomantong Caves.
The area is also infamous as the site of a World War II Japanese airfield, now known as Sandakan Airport, which was built by the forced labour of 6,000 Javanese civilians and Allied prisoners of war. In 1945, the surviving Australian prisoners were sent on the Sandakan Death Marches; only 6 of them survived the war.

Paul Ham (born 1960) is an Australian author and the Australia correspondent of the London Sunday Times. He has a masters degree in Economic History from the London School of Economics, and attended the University of Sydney in Sydney NSW and Mitchell College of Advanced Education in Bathurst, NSW (1979-1982). Paul Ham has no recorded entries of undertaking services to the community during his years at primary school or high school or while an undergraduate student.
Between 1984 and 1998 he worked in London, United Kingdom, as a business and investment journalist - for the Financial Times Group and the Sunday Times; and as a publisher. In 1992 he co-founded a financial newsletter publishing company, whose titles included Governance and The Money Laundering Bulletin. For part of that period Ham also worked part-time, as the editor of 'Amnesty', the magazine of the British headquarters of Amnesty International.
On his return to Australia, Ham wrote Kokoda - the story of the first land defeat of the Japanese in the Second World War; and Vietnam: The Australian War - a history of Australia's 15-year military involvement in Vietnam. Vietnam: The Australian War won the NSW Premier's Prize and was shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Prize for Non-Fiction; both 'Vietnam' and 'Kokoda' were shortlisted for the Walkley Award for Non-Fiction.
