Apologies for the poor sound quality. First broadcast in 1999 to mark the centenary of Boer War in South Africa, and never broadcast since as far as I am aware. Here we will see how the British Army under its inept leadership at the time invented the concept of the Concentration Camp. Uploaded from an old VHS recording.

This is a Heritage Minute on Canada and the Boer War. By: Andre, Max, Thomas and Austin. Script: The South African War, also known as the Boer War, was a significant event in the history of Canada. It marked Canada’s first official dispatch of troops to an overseas war. By the 1800’s, the British, Dutch and Germans had settled and claimed parts of Southern Africa. In 1852, The Boers, a mix of Dutch and German descendants, established two independent republics; the Transvaal and the Orange Free State, recognized by Great Britain. Britain had had control over the Boer Republics and between 1880-1881, Britain attempted without success to annex the Boer’s land. This was called the First Boer War. By 1899, with the discovery of large amounts of Gold and Diamonds in the area the Boers were living in, the British immigration and investment increased and the friction between the Boers and the British intensified. The British then decided to takeover the Orange Free State and the Transvaal and absorb these territories into the British Empire. This was called the Second Boer War. Britain asked members of the British Empire for support including Canada. British Canadians supported bringing troops to South Africa to fight with Britain but most French-Canadians and recent immigrants wondered why they should fight a war all the way in South Africa. Debate over if Canada should participate in the war rose and Sir Wilfred Laurier, the current prime minister, was concerned with maintaining national stability. Sir Wilfred Laurier decided to compromise and let volunteers go and fight in the war. Over the next three years, 7,368 Canadians and 12 female nurses went overseas to fight for the British. In the war, the British and Canadians went and ambushed the Boers, burned down their barns and sent them into concentration camps to die from disease or from starvation. After the three years of war, the Canadians returned with horrible experiences. Of the Canadians who served in South Africa, 267 were killed and are listed in the Books of Remembrance. The Boer war was a turning point for British and Canadian relationship. The Boer War is part of our Canadian Heritage. © 2014

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill, KG, OM, CH, TD, DL, FRS, RA (30 November 1874 -- 24 January 1965) was a British politician who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. Widely regarded as one of the greatest wartime leaders of the 20th century, Churchill was also an officer in the British Army, a historian, a writer, and an artist. He is the only British Prime Minister to have won the Nobel Prize in Literature, and was the first person to be made an honorary citizen of the United States. Churchill was born into the aristocratic family of the Dukes of Marlborough, a branch of the Spencer family. His father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was a charismatic politician who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer; his mother, Jennie Jerome, was an American socialite. As a young army officer, he saw action in British India, The Sudan, and the Second Boer War. He gained fame as a war correspondent and wrote books about his campaigns. At the forefront of politics for fifty years, he held many political and cabinet positions. Before the First World War, he served as President of the Board of Trade, Home Secretary, and First Lord of the Admiralty as part of the Asquith Liberal government. During the war, he continued as First Lord of the Admiralty until the disastrous Gallipoli Campaign caused his departure from government. He then briefly resumed active army service on the Western Front as commander of the 6th Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He returned to government as Minister of Munitions, Secretary of State for War, and Secretary of State for Air. After the War, Churchill served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Conservative (Baldwin) government of 1924--29, controversially returning the pound sterling in 1925 to the gold standard at its pre-war parity, a move widely seen as creating deflationary pressure on the UK economy. Also controversial was his opposition to increased home rule for India and his resistance to the 1936 abdication of Edward VIII. Out of office and politically "in the wilderness" during the 1930s, Churchill took the lead in warning about Nazi Germany and in campaigning for rearmament. On the outbreak of the Second World War, he was again appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. Following the resignation of Neville Chamberlain on 10 May 1940, Churchill became Prime Minister. His steadfast refusal to consider defeat, surrender, or a compromise peace helped inspire British resistance, especially during the difficult early days of the War when Britain stood alone among European countries in its active opposition to Adolf Hitler. Churchill was particularly noted for his speeches and radio broadcasts, which helped inspire the British people. He led Britain as Prime Minister until victory over Nazi Germany had been secured. After the Conservative Party lost the 1945 election, he became Leader of the Opposition to the Labour Government. After winning the 1951 election, he again became Prime Minister, before retiring in 1955. Upon his death, Elizabeth II granted him the honour of a state funeral, which saw one of the largest assemblies of world statesmen in history. Named the Greatest Briton of all time in a 2002 poll, Churchill is widely regarded as being among the most influential people in British history, consistently ranking well in opinion polls of Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Churchill

LibriVox recording of A Cabinet Secret by Guy Boothby. Read in English by Bellona Times Witty spy adventure set during the Boer Wars of the late 19th Century. - Summary by BellonaTimes
From 1899 to 1902, a bloody war was fought in which the Boer Republics of Transvaal and the Orange Free State faced off against the mighty British Empire. FOREWORD: Tensions had been rising between Transvaal and the British Empire in the years after the First Boer War. As relations between the nations were straining to the breaking point, Transvaal sent an ultimatum to the United Kingdom which stated that Transvaal and her ally, the Orange Free State, would declare war if the demands were not followed. Unfortunately, the ultimatum expired before it reached London and the Second Boer War broke out...
This was the first of the two wars fought between the South African Boers and the British Empire.
Ian Colquhoun (with band accompaniment) sings "Soldiers of the Queen" on Berliner's Gramophone disc 108, recorded in late 1899 and issued in early 1900. At the end, the singer gives "three cheers" to support the troops or "boys" fighting at the front in the South Africa area. The composer is Leslie Stuart (1864-1928). This song is featured in the outstanding film titled Breaker Morant. Britons once did loyally declaim About the way we ruled the waves. Every Briton's song was just the same When singing of her soldier-braves. All the world had heard it-- Wondered why we sang, and Some have sought the reason why. But we're forgetting it, And we're letting it Fade away and gradually die. So when we say that England's master Remember who has made her so It's the soldiers of the Queen, my lads Who've been, my lads, who've seen, my lads In the fight for England's glory lads When we've had to show them what we mean: And when we say we've always won And when they ask us how it's done We'll proudly point to every one Of England's soldiers of the Queen.

The Examiner 2015-03-22The Boer Wars (known in Afrikaans as Vryheidsoorloë (lit. "freedom wars")) were two wars fought between the British Empire and the two independent Boer republics, the Oranje Vrijstaat (Orange Free State) and the Republiek van Transvaal (Transvaal Republic).
The First Anglo-Boer War (1880–1881), was a rebellion of Boers (farmers) against British rule in the Transvaal that re-established their independence. The conflict occurred against the backdrop of the Pretoria government becoming increasingly ineffective at dealing with growing claims on South African land from rival interests within the country.
It was referred to as " the whites war" because it only involved the whites.
The Second War (1899–1902), by contrast, was a lengthy war—involving large numbers of troops from many British possessions, which ended with the conversion of the Boer republics into British colonies (with a promise of limited zelf-bestuur). These colonies later formed part of the Union of South Africa. The British fought directly against the Transvaal and the Oranje Vrijstaat, defeating their forces first in open warfare and then in a long and bitter guerrilla campaign. British losses were high due to both disease and combat. The policies of "scorched earth" and civilian internment in concentration camps (adopted by the British to prevent support for the farmers/Boer commando campaign) ravaged the civilian populations in the Transvaal and the Oranje Vrijstaat.
Boer ( /ˈbʊər/, /ˈboʊ.ər/, or /ˈbɔər/; Afrikaans: [ˈbuːr]) is the Dutch and Afrikaans word for farmer, which came to denote the descendants of the Dutch-speaking settlers of the eastern Cape frontier in Southern Africa during the 18th century, as well as those who left the Cape Colony during the 19th century to settle in the Orange Free State, Transvaal (which are together known as the Boer Republics), and to a lesser extent Natal. Their primary motivations for leaving the Cape were to escape British rule and extract themselves from the constant border wars between the British imperial government and the native tribes on the eastern frontier.
The Trekboers, as they were originally known, were mainly of Dutch origin and included Calvinists, Flemish and Frisian Calvinists, as well as French Huguenot and German and British protestants who first arrived in the Cape of Good Hope during the period of its administration (1652 – 1795) by the Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie or VOC). Lesser migrations of Scandinavians, Portuguese, Greeks, Italians, Spanish, Polish, Scots, English, Jews, Russians and Irish immigrants also contributed to this ethnic mix.
War is an organized, armed, and often a prolonged conflict that is carried on between states, nations, or other parties typified by extreme aggression, social disruption, and usually high mortality. War should be understood as an actual, intentional and widespread armed conflict between political communities, and therefore is defined as a form of political violence. The set of techniques used by a group to carry out war is known as warfare. An absence of war (and other violence) is usually called peace.
In 2003, Nobel Laureate Richard E. Smalley identified war as the sixth (of ten) biggest problems facing the society of mankind for the next fifty years. In the 1832 treatise On War, Prussian military general and theoretician Carl von Clausewitz defined war as follows: "War is thus an act of force to compel our enemy to do our will."
While some scholars see warfare as an inescapable and integral aspect of human culture, others argue that it is only inevitable under certain socio-cultural or ecological circumstances. Some scholars argue that the practice of war is not linked to any single type of political organization or society. Rather, as discussed by John Keegan in his History of Warfare, war is a universal phenomenon whose form and scope is defined by the society that wages it. Another argument suggests that since there are human societies in which warfare does not exist, humans may not be naturally disposed for warfare, which emerges under particular circumstances. The ever changing technologies and potentials of war extend along a historical continuum. At the one end lies the endemic warfare of the Paleolithic[citation needed] with its stones and clubs, and the naturally limited loss of life associated with the use of such weapons. Found at the other end of this continuum is nuclear warfare, along with the recently developed possible outcome of its use, namely the potential risk of the complete extinction of the human species.
