Sailing is the propulsion of a vehicle and the control of its movement with large (usually fabric) foils called sails. By changing the rigging, rudder, and sometimes the keel or centre board, a sailor manages the force of the wind on the sails in order to move the vessel relative to its surrounding medium (typically water, but also land and ice) and change its direction and speed. Mastery of the skill requires experience in varying wind and sea conditions, as well as knowledge concerning sailboats themselves and a keen understanding of one's surroundings.
While there are still some places in the world where sail-powered passenger, fishing and trading vessels are used, these craft have become rarer as internal combustion engines have become economically viable in even the poorest and most remote areas. In most countries sailing is enjoyed as a recreational activity or as a sport. Recreational sailing or yachting can be divided into racing and cruising. Cruising can include extended offshore and ocean-crossing trips, coastal sailing within sight of land, and daysailing.
Roderick David "Rod" Stewart, CBE (born 10 January 1945) is a British singer-songwriter, born and raised in North London, England, and currently residing in Epping. He is of Scottish and English ancestry.
With his distinctive raspy singing voice, Stewart came to prominence in the late 1960s and early 1970s with The Jeff Beck Group and then Faces. He launched his solo career in 1969 with his debut album An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down (US: The Rod Stewart Album). His work with The Jeff Beck Group and Faces influenced heavy metal genres.
With his career in its fifth decade, Stewart has sold over 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best selling artists of all time. In the UK, he has had six consecutive number one albums, and his tally of 62 hit singles include 31 that reached the top 10, six of which gained the number one position. He has had 16 top ten singles in the U.S, with four of these reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2008, Billboard magazine ranked him the 17th most successful artist on the "The Billboard Hot 100 Top All-Time Artists". He was voted at #33 in Q Magazine's list of the top 100 Greatest Singers of all time, and #59 on Rolling Stone 100 Greatest Singers of all time. As a solo artist, Stewart was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, and was inducted a second time, as a member of Faces, in April 2012.
Christopher Cross (born Christopher Charles Geppert; May 3, 1951) is an American singer-songwriter from San Antonio, Texas. His debut album earned him five Grammys. He is perhaps best known for his US Top Ten hit songs, "Sailing", "Ride Like the Wind", and "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)", the last of which he recorded for the film Arthur starring Dudley Moore. "Sailing" earned three Grammy Awards in 1981, while "Arthur's Theme" won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 1981 (with co-composers Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager and Peter Allen).
Cross first played with a San Antonio-based cover band named Flash (not to be confused with the early 1970s English band of the same name) before signing a solo contract with Warner Bros.
Cross released his self-titled debut album, Christopher Cross, in 1979, which garnered him five Grammy Awards. He was the first solo artist to win all four General Field Grammy Awards (Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist) in the same year. Hot 100 top 20 hits from this album included "Ride Like the Wind" (featuring backing vocals by Michael McDonald), "Sailing", "Never Be the Same", and "Say You'll Be Mine" (featuring backing vocals by Nicolette Larson).
Michael Gordon Oldfield (born 15 May 1953) is an English multi-instrumentalist musician and composer, working a style that blends progressive rock, folk, ethnic or world music, classical music, electronic music, New Age, and more recently, dance. His music is often elaborate and complex in nature. He is best known for his hit 1973 album Tubular Bells, which launched Virgin Records, and for his 1983 hit single "Moonlight Shadow". He is also well known for his hit rendition of the Christmas piece, "In Dulci Jubilo".
Oldfield's parents are Raymond Oldfield, a general practitioner, and his wife Maureen Liston, a nurse. His sister Sally and brother Terry are successful musicians in their own right and have appeared on several of his albums. Mike Oldfield was born in the Battle Hospital, Reading, Berkshire, and he attended St Joseph's Convent School, Highlands Junior School in Tilehurst, St Edward's Preparatory School, and Presentation College in Reading. When he was 13 he moved with his parents to Harold Wood in northeast London, where he attended Hornchurch Grammar School. He only stayed there long enough to take one GCE examination, in English, as he had already begun his music career.
I am sailing, I am sailing
Home again 'cross the sea
I am sailing, stormy waters
To be near you, to be free
I am flying, I am flying
Like a bird 'cross the sky
I am flying, passing high clouds
To be with you, who can say
Can you hear me, can you hear me
Through the dark night, far away?
I am dying, forever crying
To be with you, who can say
Can you hear me?
Can you hear me, can you hear me
Through the dark night far away?
I am dying, forever crying
To be with you, who can say, who can say
We are sailing, we are sailing
Home again 'cross the sea
We are sailing stormy waters
To be near you, to be free
Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free
Oh my Lord, to be near you, to be free
Oh my Lord, to be near you, to be free
(Rod Steward)
I am sailing, i am sailing,
Home again 'cross the sea.
I am sailing, stormy waters,
To be near you, to be free.
I am flying, i am flying,
Like a bird 'cross the sky.
I am flying, passing high clouds,
To be with you, to be free.
Can you hear me, can you hear me
Thro' the dark night, far away,
I am dying, forever trying,
To be with you, who can say.
Can you hear me, can you hear me,
Thro' the dark night far away.
I am dying, forever trying,
To be with you, who can say.
We are sailing, we are sailing,
Home again 'cross the sea.
We are sailing stormy waters,
To be near you, to be free.
Oh lord, to be near you, to be free.
Oh lord, to be near you, to be free,
Jerry Jeff Walker
Spoken:
Well, there I am in Mexico, man,
I'm sittin' on a big hot rock with the blues,
Watchin' this sailboat drive by, and I'm wonderin', "Where's mine?"
Hell, I know where there's ship in a bottle,
I mean a schooner with a worm on board, yeah.
Chorus:
I think I'm gonna go off sailing
I think I'm gonna go off sailing
I think I'm gonna go off sailing
Cause I've been on dry land too long
Something I seen here seems to make me seasick
Something I seen here seems to make me seasick
Something I seen here seems to make me seasick
And I been on dry land too long
Roll on
Chorus
Leeches, land sharks, octopuses make my brain hurt
Land sharks, octopuses make my brain hurt
Yea, and I've been on dry land too long
Ship in a bottle
Chorus
Sail on, sail on
Chorus
Let's carry on
Chorus
I need a ship in a bottle
Well it's not far down to paradise
At least not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find tranquility
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Baby believe me
It's not far to Never-Never Land
No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy
Of innocence again
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Baby believe me
Sailing takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and a wind to carry me
Soon I will be free
Fantasy
It gets the best of me
When I'm sailing
All the world in a reverie
Every word is a symphony
Won't you believe me?
Sailing (takes me away) takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be (where I wanna be)
Just a dream and a wind to carry me
Soon I will be free
Soon I will be free
Ahhh....
It's not far back to sanity
At least it's not for me
And if he wind is right you can sail away
And find serenity
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Baby, believe me
Sailing takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and a wind to carry me
Soon I will be free
Soon I will be free (FREE!)
Sailing takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be (I've always heard it could be)
Just a dream and a wind to carry me
Soon I will be free
Maybe tomorrow with the wind on my side
I will sail across the ocean
To the island of white, the sea is pink
Only one star in sight
That's where I'll be going
Because I'm searching for the light
There goes my mind again
It just can't stop its wondering around
Cause it wants to know everything that is going on
Sailing across the ocean
Sailing across the sea of time
Could be I'd find promotion
Maybe I can be what my teacher was to me
He was a man giving the truth to me
Let me see for myself what's going on
Maybe soon I will see the great horizon
The velvet sails of my ship in the night
Give away the colors of the faces delight
Land ho was the cry of the day
As I turned to face the captain
When I heard a voice say
There goes my mind again
It just can't stop this wondering around
Cause he wants to know everything that's going on
Sailing across the ocean
Sailing across the sea of time
Sailing across the ocean
Sailing across the sea of time
Sailing across the ocean
Sailing across the sea of time
I am sailing, I am sailing,
home again 'cross the sea.
I am sailing, stormy waters,
to be near you, to be free.
I am flying, I am flying,
like a bird 'cross the sky.
I am flying, passing high clouds,
to be with you, to be free.
Can you hear me, can you hear me
thro' the dark night, far away,
I am dying, forever trying,
to be with you, who can say.
Can you hear me, can you hear me,
thro' the dark night far away.
I am dying, forever trying,
to be with you, who can say.
We are sailing, we are sailing,
home again 'cross the sea.
We are sailing stormy waters,
It's not far down to paradise
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find tranquility
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
It's not far to never never land
No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy
Of innocence again
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
Sailing
Takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
Fantasy
It gets the best of me
When I'm sailing
All caught up in the reverie
Every word is a symphony
Won't you believe me
It's not far back to sanity
At least it's not for me
And when the wind is right you can sail away
And find serenity
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
It's not far down to paradise
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right
You can sail away
And find tranquility
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe in me, oh
It's not far to never never land
No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right
You can find the joy
Of innocence again
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe in me
Sailing takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
Soon I will be free, yeah
Fantasy, it gets the best of me
When I'm sailing, oh
All caught up in the reverie
Every word is a symphony
Won't you believe in me?
Oh, sailing takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free, yeah
Ooh, it's not far back to sanity
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right
You can sail away
And find serenity
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe in me
Oh, sailing takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be, oh
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
Well, I'm sailing, sailing
Sailing, I am sailing
Home again cross the sea
I am sailing stormy waters
To be near you
To be free
I am flying, I am flying
Like a bird cross the sky
I am flying passing high clouds
To be with you
Who can sail
Can you hear me, can you hear me
Through the dark night far away
I am dying forever trying to be near you
Who can sail
I am dying, forever trying
To be near you
Who can sail
We are sailing, we are sailing
Home again cross the sea
We are sailing stormy waters
To be near you
To be free
To be near you, to be near you
I am sailing, I am sailing
Home again, 'cross the sea
I am sailing stormy waters
To be near You, to be free
I am sailing, I am sailing
Home again, 'cross the sea
I am sailing stormy waters
To be near You, to be free
I am flying, I am flying
Like a bird 'cross the sky
I am flying, passing high clouds
To be with You, to be free
Can You hear me, can You hear me?
Thro' the dark night, far away
I am dying, forever trying
To be with You, who can say
Can You hear me, can You hear me?
Thro' the dark night far away
I am dying, forever trying
To be with You, who can say
We are sailing, we are sailing
Home again, 'cross the sea
We are sailing stormy waters
To be near You, to be free
Oh Lord, to be near You, to be free
Oh Lord, to be near You, to be free
I am sailing, I am sailing
Home again, across the sea
I'm sailing stormy water
To be near you, to be free
I'm flying; I'm flying
Like a bird across the sky
I'm flying, passin' high clouds
The be near you, baby, to be free
We are sailing, we are sailing
Home again, across the sea
We are sailing stormy waters
To be with you, baby, to be free
Lord, sailing yeah, sailing yeah
Sailing, oh yeah
Sailing stormy water
Trying to be believe
Flying, yeah, flying
I am sailing, I am sailing,
home again 'cross the sea.
I am sailing, stormy waters,
to be near you, to be free.
I am flying, I am flying,
like a bird 'cross the sky.
I am flying, passing high clouds,
to be with you, to be free.
Can you hear me, can you hear me
thro' the dark night, far away,
I am dying, forever trying,
to be with you, who can say.
Can you hear me, can you hear me,
thro' the dark night far away.
I am dying, forever trying,
to be with you, who can say.
We are sailing, we are sailing,
home again 'cross the sea.
We are sailing stormy waters,
to be near you, to be free.
Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free.
Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free,
[Chorus:]
We're sailing on a ship to the ocean.
Sailing on the ocean to the sea.
We're sailing up a creek all the way to Mozambique.
Sailing is the only life for me.
There was a pirate with a peg leg and a parrot,
Who bought his vegetables from farmers at the pier.
He'd gladly trade a piece of eight for a carrot,
But was dumb-floundered that corn cost a buccaneer.
[Chorus]
There was a ship with a cargo of red paint,
To a tragic fate everyone was doomed.
It rammed a ship with a cargo of brown paint,
The ships sank and the sailors were marooned.
[Chorus]
A pelican was talking to his gull friend,
About the way the walrus made him feel.
They stopped in for a drink down at the sand bar,
And caught a tuna from BB Kingfish and Lou Seal.
It's not far down to paradise
at least it's not for me
And if the wind is right
you can sail away
and find tranquility
Oh the canvas can do miracles
just you wait and see
Believe me
It's not far to never never land
no reason to pretend
And if the wind is right
you can find the joy
of innocence again
Oh the canvas can do miracles
just you wait and see
Believe me
(chorus)
Sailing takes me away
to where I've always
heard it could be
Just a dream and the
wind to carry me
and soon I will be free
Fantasy, it gets the best of me
when I'm sailing
All caught up in the reverie
every word is a symphony
Won't you believe me?
(chorus)
(instrumental)
Well it's not far back to sanity
at least it's not for me
And when the wind is right
you can sail away
and find serenity
Oh the canvas can do miracles
just you wait and see
Believe me
Wind in my sails, I lived for days
No water, no food, it was good
I didn't mind, no, nowhere to be
Nothing to see except me
Only fear
Can make you feel lonely out here
You learn to accept
Whatever you can get
When there is no law
You've done nothing wrong
You can't take too long
Making up songs
Only fear
Can make you feel lonely out here
You learn to accept
Whatever you can get
Whatever you can get
Only fear
Can make you feel lonely out here
You learn to accept
Whatever you can get
Sailing, I'm almost sailing
Waiting to sail away
Silver horizon beckons
Me to the silver sway.
Chorus:
Feeling hard but you're looking through me.
Seems to say that you're nothing to me at all.
See there is something not right tonight
Peel that we're somehow not quite as tight.
Morning is almost touching
Night with her fingertips
And I'm sure to be sailing
Far from my lover's lips.
Chorus
Softly, so very softly
Darkness can fade away
I will leave you my blessing
And see you another day
It's not far down to paradise
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find tranquility
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
It's not far to never never land
No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy
Of innocence again
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
Sailing
Takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
Fantasy
It gets the best of me
When i'm sailing
All caught up in the reverie
Every word is a symphony
Won't you believe me
It's not far back to sanity
At least it's not for me
And when the wind is right you can sail away
And find serenity
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Outside in the middle of a field
I can hold a finger high in the air
Under the sky in the middle of it all
I can feel the wind blow the same for us all
In the middle there's a lot to know
In the middle there's a lot to see
Of a world that can be so cold
Of a world with a heart of gold
Chorus:
Sailing, Sailing
Sailing, Sailing
So many ways the world does live
So many ways the world does give
So many ways the world does make
So many ways the world does take
So many different lives the world does live
So many rivers the world must cross
So many tears the world does stream
I am sailing, I am sailing...
Home again across the sea
I am sailing,
Stormy waters
To be near you, to be free
I am flying
I am flying
Like a bird
Across the sky
I am flying
Passsing high clouds
To be with you, to be free...
Can you hear me?
Can you hear me?
Through the dark night...
Far away
I am dying
Forever trying
To be with you, Who can say...
Can you hear me?
Can you hear me?
Through the dark night...
Far away...
I am dying...
Forever trying.
To be with you, Who can say...
We are sailing
We are sailing
Home again
Across the Sea
We are sailing
Stormy Waters
To be near you, to be free
We are sailing,
We are sailing...
Home again, across the sea
We are sailing, Stormy Waters (Stormy Waters)
To be near you, to be free
Oh lord to be near you, to be free
Let's go all the way
motion in the ocean tonight
let's go all the way
look up the stars shines
all the way
motion in the ocean
all the way
Sail with me tonight
i really got to getaway
the stars shine for us tonight
to lighten up your face

cause you know he be playing our song
Let's go all the way
motion in the ocean tonight
let's go all the way
look up the stars shines
all the way
motion in the ocean

in my tugboat we be tuggin'
in my pumpboat we be pumpin'
In my speedboat we be speedin'
in my sailboat we be sailin'

Let's go all the way
motion in the ocean tonight
let's go all the way
look up the stars shines
all the way
motion in the ocean
SAILING
(Gavin Sutherland, 1972)
I am sailing, I am sailing,
home again 'cross the sea.
I am sailing, stormy waters,
to be near you, to be free.
I am flying, I am flying,
like a bird 'cross the sky.
I am flying, passing high clouds,
to be with you, to be free.
Can you hear me, can you hear me
thro' the dark night, far away,
I am dying, forever trying,
to be with you, who can say.
Can you hear me, can you hear me,
thro' the dark night far away.
I am dying, forever trying,
to be with you, who can say.
We are sailing, we are sailing,
home again 'cross the sea.
We are sailing stormy waters,
to be near you, to be free.
Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free.
Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free,
So now the years are rolling by,
and it's not long since you and I could have been train drivers and astronauts.
And now we're stuck in furnished ruts,
but yet the thing that really cuts is that we can't remember how we got caught.
Filtered air, computer screens, muffled sighs and might-have-beens
count your blessings, then breathe, and count to ten.
And though it doesn't often show, we are scared
because we know our forefathers were famers and fishermen.
And so the world has changed, worse or better's hard to tell,
but my hope remains within the arms of Isabel.
So now our calloused hands once told a story honest
as it's old of sowing seeds and setting sail.
But now our hands are soft and weak
and working seven days a week at these salvation schemes that are bound to fail.
And I'll admit that I am scared of what I don't understand.
But darling, if you're there, gentle voice and soothing hands,
to quiet my despair, to shore up all my plans, darling, if you're there...
And so the world has changed, and I must change as well.
The machines we've made will damn us into hell.
And the time will come when all must save themselves.
Well it's not far down to paradise
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
and find tranquility
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Baby believe me
It's no far to Never Never Land
No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy
Of innocence again
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you waint and see
Baby believe me
(REFRÃO)
Sailing, takes me away to where I've aways heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon i will be free
Fantasy, it gets the best of me
Whem I'm sailig
All caught up the reverie, every word is a symphony
won't you believe me?
(REFRÃO)
Well it's not far back to sanity, at least it's not for me
and if wind is right you can sail away
and find serenity
Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see
Believe me
