Pete Drake (8 October 1932 – 29 July 1988), born Roddis Franklin Drake, was a major Nashville, Tennessee-based record producer and pedal steel guitar player.
One of the most sought-after backup musicians of the 1960s, Drake played on such hits as Lynn Anderson's "Rose Garden", Charlie Rich's "Behind Closed Doors"' Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay"' and Tammy Wynette's "Stand by Your Man". (Drake's work on this last tune is debatable, in that some sources[which?] claim Sonny Curtis to be the steel guitar player on that record. However, most of the evidence[which?] points to Drake being the steel player on Wynette's huge hit.)
Drake was born in Augusta, Georgia, the son of a Pentecostal preacher, in 1932. In 1950, he drove to Nashville, heard Jerry Byrd on the Grand Ole Opry, and was inspired to buy a steel guitar. He organized a band, Sons of the South, in Atlanta in the 1950s, which included future country stars like Jerry Reed, Doug Kershaw, Roger Miller, Jack Greene, and Joe South.
In 1959 he moved to Nashville and went on the road as a backup musician for Don Gibson, Marty Robbins and others. In 1964 he had an international hit on Smash Records with his "talking steel guitar" playing on the album Forever. The resultant single, "Forever," reached #22 in the Billboard Hot 100, eventually sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. His innovative use of what would be called the talk box, later used by Peter Frampton, Joe Walsh and Jeff Beck, added novel effects to the pedal steel guitar. The album Pete Drake and His Talking Steel Guitar, harkened back to the sounds of Alvino Rey and his wife Luise King, who first modulated a guitar tone with the signal from a throat microphone in 1939. The unique sound of the talk box with a steel guitar was new in the 1960s, and it made the sounds of vocalizing along with the strings of the steel guitar. According to an interview of Drake:
Richard Starkey, MBE (born 7 July 1940), better known by his stage name Ringo Starr, is an English musician and actor who gained worldwide fame as the drummer for the Beatles. When the band formed in 1960, Starr was a member of another Liverpool band, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. He joined the Beatles in August 1962, taking the place of Pete Best. In addition to his drumming, Starr is featured on lead vocals on a number of successful Beatles songs (in particular, "With a Little Help from My Friends", "Yellow Submarine", and the Beatles version of "Act Naturally"). He is credited as a co-writer of the songs "What Goes On" and "Flying", and as the writer of "Don't Pass Me By" and "Octopus's Garden".
As drummer for the Beatles, Starr was musically creative, and his contribution to the band's music has received high praise from notable drummers in more recent times. Starr described himself as "your basic offbeat drummer with funny fills". Drummer Steve Smith said that Starr's popularity "brought forth a new paradigm" where "we started to see the drummer as an equal participant in the compositional aspect" and that Starr "composed unique, stylistic drum parts for The Beatles songs". In 2011, Starr was picked as the fifth-best drummer of all-time by Rolling Stone readers.
Peter Kenneth Frampton (born 22 April 1950) is an English born naturalized American musician, singer, songwriter, producer, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist. He was previously associated with the bands Humble Pie and The Herd. Frampton's international breakthrough album was his live release, Frampton Comes Alive!. The album sold over 6 million copies in the United States alone and spawned several hits. Since then he has released several major albums. He has also worked with David Bowie and both Matt Cameron and Mike McCready from Pearl Jam, among others. Frampton is best known for such hits as "Breaking All The Rules", "Show Me the Way", "Baby, I Love Your Way", "Do You Feel Like We Do", and "I'm in You", which remain staples on classic-rock radio. He has also appeared as himself in television shows such as The Simpsons and Family Guy. Frampton is known for his work as a guitar player and particularly with a Talkbox and his tenor voice.
Frampton was born in Bromley, England. He attended Bromley Technical High School, at which his father, Owen Frampton, was a teacher and the head of the Art department. He first became interested in music when he was seven years old. Upon discovering his grandmother's banjolele (a banjo-shaped ukulele) in the attic, he taught himself to play, and later taught himself to play guitar and piano as well. At age eight he started taking classical music lessons.
Davy's got a lesson, learned it the hard way
He's now a broken hearted man, and he hasn't got a
word to say
He roll like a fence post, he stand like a tire
He's been thrown to the lions, says he wanna join the
rodeo.
And it's a dogone shame that he's a dog on a chain
He says he'll find a way back, maybe buy a cadillac
He wants a place to call his own, and his finger nails
are turning black
He fly like a night stand, run like an old clock
He bought himself a six string, if you listen you can
hear him rock.
And it's a doggone shame that he's a dog on a chain
Some say he'll make it thru while others claim he's
just a fool
I could turn my eyes away
Drawn to your reckless holiday
Like a crash on the highway
Everyone is watching you
Wondering what you might do
Give it all away
Much more than I could take
Give it all away
Never asking nothing in return
I could not turn and walk away
What have you done to make me stay?
If you want I'll be by your side
And if you don't maybe suicide
It's my love that'd kill me dear
If you won't hold me and have me near
But don't you fret and don't be scared
'Cause baby I am a millionaire
I'll make you a star and I'll make you a queen
I'll put your face in all the magazines
Okay, so I lied and none of that's true
But not having you is making me blue
And I want you for the rest of my life
Yes, I want you to be my wife
I'll give you a ring and a home sweet home
And if you want you'll be free to roam
But not too far, I'll be begging you please
Begging you please upon my bended knees
'Cause if you don't love me I'll kill myself
If you don't love me I'll kill myself
And if you don't love me I'll kill myself
And if you don't love me I'll kill myself
I need you more than a sailor needs a breeze
I need you more than an Eskimo freeze
I need your loving more than money or air
And if you don't love me baby that's not fair
'Cause I'll be good to you in every way
I'll give you loving baby everyday
A loving that's good, a loving that's all right
A loving like an oven on the coldest night, ooh
'Cause if you don't love me I'll kill myself
If you don't love me I'll kill myself
And if you don't love me I'll kill myself
And if you don't love me I'll kill myself
