Shooting with the Blackmagic Cinema Camera Part 2: Canon and Nikon lens tests, using external batteries
*I was in Australia when I got my hands on the Blackmagic Cinema Camera. Footage in this report was filmed in Australia and then later in the UK. The was new unexplored territory. I’d never worked with RAW, the last time I shot film was in 1992, and suddenly, in my hands, was something like a big DSLR capable of turning out images at 2.5K recorded to SSD as 12-bit RAW. Not only that I could use all my existing Canon EF lenses and I could shoot ProRes if I chose.*
Initial tests were amazing and difficult. Amazing the quality and detail which I captured, difficult because I had no idea how to use DaVinci Resolve. I’d recorded over 30 minutes of RAW footage and couldn’t do anything with it. I looked at Resolve with no clue what to do.
**Working with RAW was going to take time and effort.**
I opened the manual and starting reading. I read info. online and searched for video tutorials... I got there. A few hours later and I was able to bring footage in and out of the system, do basic correction, and output.
The images were the most film-like images I have worked with since I worked with film. I realise that’s a big statement, though let me qualify it by saying I’ve been shooting and working with video since 1989. My experiences with video gear go back to the 1980’s in days of 4:3, one inch C-format and Betacam before SP or DigiBeta even existed. I’ve used a lot cameras and a lot of formats and the video look has persisted.
It changed when the 5D Mark II arrived - this had the film look. And it was fantastic for many uses, though limited by the low bandwidth recording. RED has the film look, though I haven’t shot a lot with RED cameras. The Sony F3 which I use and love - beautiful images thought I wouldn’t say filmic. More the beautiful HD look. Others at the high end I have never even touched.
**The Blackmagic Cinema Camera provides the quality and ability to record huge amounts of data.**
Given that the camera works native with Canon EF lenses means some of the best glass on the planet can be used. Not only can you use Canon lenses, Nikon lenses can also be used: via adapters. With adapter attached Nikon lenses can be mounted onto the Canon EF lens mount on the Blackmagic Cinema Camera.
The world of camera technology is red hot right now. With 4K cameras announced by Sony, price drops from RED, Canon D500 shooting 4K, Alexa at the high-end... and the Blackmagic Cinema Camera slips in at an unimaginable price-point and delivers in terms of image quality and resolution. Having shot with the camera now for several months I would say this camera is definitely a capable shooting machine and not something which has been overhyped.
*The Blackmagic Cinema Camera is now slowly coming to market. It is shipping in limited quantities. Soon these cameras will be everywhere and the world of digital filmmaking will be changed forever.*

LA PUNKS: MIKE KELLEY AND FRIENDS
Spectacle is proud to present two films from Mike Kelley, one of the most influential artists of the last 25 years. A rousing testament to the endless creative and vital energy that Kelley exhibited throughout his career, he teamed up with artists Raymond Pettibon and Paul McCarthy for two radical, seminal works presented here courtesy of Pettibon and Electronic Arts Intermix.
THURSDAY, JANUARY 17TH - 8PM
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30TH - 8PM
HEIDI
Dir: Mike Kelley & Paul McCarthy, 1992.
63 min. USA.
Heidi is the brilliant and disquieting “real-time” meta-cinematic adaptation of Joanna Spyri's classic Swiss childrens' fiction with incredibly gross rubber puppets.
Kelley writes of the endeavor: "In late 1992 at the Krinzinger Galerie in Vienna, a show of Los Angeles based artists was held entitled LAX. Paul McCarthy and I were among the roster of artists invited to participate in this exhibition. We did a collaborative work based on Joanna Spyri's novel, Heidi. Our work consisted of a set, a group of partial and full life-size rubber figures and a video tape shot entirely on the set. We were interested in addressing the fractured nature of filmic language, the fact that films are experienced as a seamless whole. In the tape, we foregrounded this fracture in our treatment of the actor. In films, horror films particularly, it is often necessary to have sculptural stand-ins for actors. Depending on their function, these doubles may be parts of, complete replicas of, smaller or larger than, the actor, or, in the case of cell or computer animation, may not exist three-dimensionally at all. They are all simply tools in the production of an illusion, and are not meant to be seen outside of the film context. In Heidi we toyed with this illusionary nature by treating the doubles and stand-ins for the actors as obvious sculpture, more in the manner of a puppet show than traditional film."
SIR DRONE
Dir. Raymond Pettibon, 1989.
56 min. USA.
Sir Drone is radical illustrator Raymond Pettibon's fittingly urgent, scrappy and hilarious filmic paean to the teenage punk rock impulse. Starring LA punk/art stalwarts Mike Kelley and Mike Watt as two young dudes trying to put a band together, the film was shot by Pettibon on home video gear in two days, with all of his dialogue read off a cue cards; originally distributed through record labels on VHS, the movie stands, aesthetically and through its production-means, as a knowing reflection of the burgeoning DIY experience and the transfiguring internal forces that are forged by it.
Of course, Watt says it best: “Pettibon presents the early days of Los Angeles punk rock not as simple metaphor for the human condition, but as a singular attempt to break the organic chain of metaphysical fate. there and then and forever after, music was to be no longer music. hippies were to be no longer hippies. everything was instead to be punk. but punk as an end - a squelching of artistic attempt. more, a transcendence of artistic statement itself, by starting with human material that is entirely artless - punk!”

We Have Signal: The Weakerthans
The band was formed in 1997 in Winnipeg, Manitoba by John K. Samson, after he left the punk band Propagandhi to start a publishing company. Samson joined forces with bassist John P. Sutton and drummer Jason Tait, and created The Weakerthans as a vehicle for a more melodic and introspective brand of songwriting than that of Propagandhi. One origin story for the bands name, as quoted in the liner notes of Fallow, is a line from the 1992 film The Lover: ""Go ahead, Im weaker than you can possibly imagine.""The bands name may also refer to a Ralph Chaplin quote from ""Solidarity Forever"": ""What force on Earth can be weaker than the feeble strength of one?"" The band alludes to this line in the song ""Pamphleteer"" from the album Left and Leaving. The Weakerthans, with support from Jim Bryson, at a 2007 concert in Toronto In 2003, the band moved to Epitaph Records and released Reconstruction Site. The album was met with rave reviews from Canadian and international critics for its ambitious combination of punk, rock, folk, country and sonnets. It also became the bands best-selling record to date, as well as its airplay breakthrough on Canadian radio. It was the second Weakerthans album to be produced by Ian Blurton. Sutton, who played on all three of the bands first albums, left in August 2004 and was replaced by Greg Smith. In 2005, Left and Leaving was named one of the ten best Canadian albums of all time in Chart magazines reader poll. In the same poll, Samson wrote the capsule review for another top ten finisher, The Lowest of the Lows Shakespeare My Butt, which he cited as a major influence on his own music. Reunion Tour was released on September 25, 2007 in North America by Epitaph and ANTI-. The band released a video for ""Civil Twilight"", which consisted of a single, unbroken camera shot of the band on a Winnipeg Transit city bus. Epitaph also re-released the Weakerthans first two albums, Fallow and Left and Leaving, in Canada on November 6, 2007.
