The Krio are an ethnic group in Sierra Leone, descendants of slaves resettled from Nova Scotia, the West Indies and England. In this way, as decedents of slaves, the Krio are liberated slaves from various parts of Africa. They were settled in Freetown, Sierra Leone by the British between 1792 and 1855 (or possibly as late as 1860). Land in Liberia was later purchased by America as a settlement for American slaves who wished to return to Africa. Liberia also has a community called Freetown.
The Krio (2%) (http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/5475.htm) are the smallest ethnic group of Sierra Leone. While a majority live primarily in the capital, Freetown, Krio also reside in villages and towns throughout the country.
The Portuguese 'discovered' Sierra Leone in 1462 (http://education.stateuniversity.com/pages/1332/Sierra-Leone-HISTORY-BACKGROUND.html). In 1787 the British helped 400 freed slaves from the United States, Nova Scotia, and Great Britain return to Sierra Leone to settle in what they called the "Province of Freedom." Disease and hostility from the indigenous people nearly eliminated the first group of returnees. This settlement was joined by other groups of freed slaves and soon became known as Freetown. In 1792, Freetown became one of Britain's first colonies in West Africa (http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/5475.htm)
African Americans (also referred to as Black Americans or Afro-Americans, and formerly as American Negroes) are citizens or residents of the United States that have ancestry from any of the native populations of Sub-Saharan Africa.
African Americans make up the single largest racial minority in the United States. Most African Americans are of West and Central African descent and are descendants of enslaved Africans within the boundaries of the present United States. However, some immigrants from African, Caribbean, Central American or South American nations, or their descendants, may be identified or self-identify with the term.
African-American history starts in the 16th century with African slaves who quickly rose up against the Spanish explorer Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón and progresses to the present day, with Barack Obama as the 44th and current President of the United States. Between those landmarks there have been events and issues, both resolved and ongoing, including slavery, racism, Reconstruction, development of the African-American community, participation in the great military conflicts of the United States, racial segregation, and the Civil Rights Movement.
lansana Sheriff (born on August 28, 1966 in Daru, Kailahun District, Sierra Leone) popularly known by his stage name Steady Bongo, is an internationally recognized Sierra Leonean musician and record producer. He is one of the most famous musicians from Sierra Leone.
Lansana Sheriff better known as Steady Bongo was born in Daru, a rural town in Kailahun District in Eastern Sierra Leone to an ethnic Mandingo father and a Mende mother. Steady Bongo grew up in a largely Mende speaking household in Daru. From an early age, he performed on stage, imitating musicians such as the legendary Big Fayia, Samile, Eric Donaldson, and Prince Nico. He hosted a program called "Variety Time" at the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service (SLBS). His first album, Ready Before You Married, was released in 1990 and became an instant success not only in Sierra Leone, but in neighbouring countries as well. His second album Kormot Bi En Me, released in 1996, received the Best Album Award and had record-breaking sales. The album was the first of Steady Bongo's records to be released on CD in the United States. In 1998, he released Welcome to Democracy Na Salone and Born For Suffer in 1999. He's one of the first musicians that popularised Sierra Leone music to the outside world.
