Institute of technology (also: university of technology, polytechnic university, technikon, and technical college) is a designation employed for a wide range of learning institutions awarding different types of degrees and operating often at variable levels of the educational system. It may be an institution of higher education and advanced engineering and scientific research or professional vocational education, specializing in science, engineering, and technology or different sorts of technical subjects. It may also refer to a secondary education school focused in vocational training. The term institute of technology is often abbreviated IT and is not to be confused with information technology.
The English term polytechnic appeared in the early 19th century, from the French École Polytechnique, an engineering school founded in 1794 in Paris. The French term comes from the Greek πολύ (polú or polý) meaning "many" and τεχνικός (tekhnikós) meaning "arts".
While the terms "institute of technology" and "polytechnic" are synonymous, the preference concerning which one is the preferred term varies from country to country.
The Oregon Institute of Technology or Oregon Tech is the only public polytechnic university in the Northwestern United States. Oregon Tech has a residential campus in Klamath Falls, Oregon and an urban campus in Wilsonville, Oregon with sites in Salem, La Grande, and Seattle, as well as online degree offerings. Oregon Tech provides a total of 32 degree programs in engineering, health technologies, management, communications, psychology and applied sciences with a total of 37 majors. The university is among a small group of Institutes of Technology in the United States which tends to be devoted to hands-on instruction and applied sciences.
Oregon Tech is frequently cited as one of the West Coast's best public universities for preparing students for the technology and renewable energy industry. The university claims that 90% of its graduates are employed or doing graduate studies within 6 months after completing a degree program.
Oregon Tech was founded as the Oregon Vocational School on July 14, 1947 to train and re-educate returning World War II veterans. Under the direction of Winston Purvine, the first classes were held in a deactivated Marine Corps hospital three miles northeast of Klamath Falls. The following year, the school's title was changed to the Oregon Technical Institute. In the first school year, 1947-1948, veterans constituted 98 percent of student enrollment. By 1950, the figure was 75 percent. In that year, in response to the Korean conflict, the school received a contract for training soldiers in welding and warehouse management. In 1953, Associate degree programs in Surveying and Structural Engineering Technologies were first accredited by the Engineers Council for Professional Development.
Oregon (i/ˈɔːrᵻɡən/ AWR-ə-gən) is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Oregon is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the north by Washington, on the south by California, on the east by Idaho, and on the southeast by Nevada. The Columbia River delineates much of Oregon's northern boundary, and the Snake River delineates much of the eastern boundary. The parallel 42° north delineates the southern boundary with California and Nevada. It is one of only three states of the contiguous United States to have a coastline on the Pacific Ocean, and the proximity to the ocean heavily influences the state's mild winter climate, despite the latitude.
Oregon was inhabited by many indigenous tribes before Western traders, explorers, and settlers arrived. An autonomous government was formed in the Oregon Country in 1843, the Oregon Territory was created in 1848, and Oregon became the 33rd state on February 14, 1859. Today, at 98,000 square miles, Oregon is the ninth largest and, with a population of 4 million, 26th most populous U.S. state. The capital of Oregon is Salem, the second most populous of its cities, with 160,614 residents (2013 estimate). With 609,456 residents (2013 estimate), Portland is the largest city in Oregon and ranks 29th in the U.S. Its metro population of 2,314,554 (2013 estimate) is 24th. The Willamette Valley in western Oregon is the state's most densely populated area, home to eight of the ten most populous cities.
The Oregon Institute was an American school located in the Willamette Valley of the Oregon Country during the 19th century. Begun in 1842, it was the first school built for European Americans west of Missouri. Founded by members of the Methodist Mission, it was located in what is now Salem, Oregon. The school began as a pre-college institution, but by 1853 was developed as Willamette University. The school's three-story building was a prominent feature in the early days of Oregon; it served as a meeting place for the Oregon Territorial Legislature when it first moved to Salem.
Missionary Jason Lee came to Oregon Country in 1834 with Nathaniel Jarvis Wyeth to begin missionary work amongst the natives. First Lee and his men built Mission Bottom north of present Salem, Oregon, but that was flooded in 1841. The Methodist Mission was relocated to Chemeketa Plain in what would later become Salem. After moving the mission, they began constructing a new building for the Indian Manual Labor School. Before the building was completed, the Methodist Mission was dissolved in 1844 and its assets sold.

Bernie Dehler is a former evangelical Christian preacher. After being an evangelical Christian for 25 years, he became an atheist. His reasons are primarily scientific and philosophical. As a Christian, he decided to study more science in order to debate atheists, and in so doing, came to see that the naturalistic worldview made much better sense of the world than did his religious worldview. Bernie has been involved in many debates first as a Christian, then as an atheist. In 2014 he wrote the book entitled: “Modern Science and Philosophy Destroy Christian Theology”. Bernie received a Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering Technology degree from Oregon Institute of Technology in 1984, and has been working in the computer industry ever since. In 2007 he also earned a Masters...
