A small fire that broke out inside a south side car dealership Monday morning is believed to have been deliberately set.

The fire broke out around 2 a.m. in the showroom of Capital GMC Buick Inc., near 34 Avenue and 97 Street.

When sales manager Tony Plett received a call from firefighters about the blaze, he hopped in his vehicle and drove to the scene to find lots of smoke, water, fire trucks and police officers.

According to Plett, the flames were contained to a small area on the north side of the showroom, destroying a Hyundai Elantra. The rest of the showroom and administration areas sustained significant smoke and water damage. No employees were inside the building at the time.

"I just started thinking of all the different processes I had to go through to make business happen and to get it all fixed up," said Plett, noting it appears an accelerant was tossed into the showroom through a broken window.

The service and parts department remain open for business as usual. Plett anticipates the new and used sales department will be open for business on Tuesday.

Police continue to investigate and can't confirm if the blaze is arson at this time.
