The US is carrying out a series of air strikes on Islamic State militants close to the vital Haditha dam in western Iraq, US officials say.

The strikes are to protect the Iraqi forces and Sunni tribesmen in control of the dam.

The US has carried out scores of air strikes to support Iraqi and Kurdish forces as they try to halt the advance of the militants in the north and west.

Earlier, Kurdish forces retook the strategically important Mount Zarta.

Islamic State fighters have targeted a number of dams in their offensive, capturing the facilities at Mosul and Fallujah.

However, the group has so far failed in its attempts to capture Haditha dam in western Anbar province.

It is Iraq\'s second largest dam.

A mysterious late-night blast in the Nicaraguan capital of Managua that left a crater 40 feet wide was most likely caused by a meteorite, government scientists said on Sunday.

The loud explosion occurred around 11 p.m. on Saturday on the outskirts of Managua near the airport, said Wilfried Strauch from the Nicaraguan Institute of Earth Studies (Ineter) in an interview on a government TV channel. No one was injured.

Strauch said that Nicaragua is asking the United States for expert help to investigate the event, which was picked up by seismic sensors.

Sellafield has more high-level nuclear waste storage than anywhere else in the UK, and the government has allocated £67.5bn towards a huge clean-up project. As Calder Hall, it became Britain\'s first atomic power station in 1954 and, almost 50 years on, it is a place where high level industrial waste is reprocessed and stored. But the Nuclear Management Partners (NMP) project to tackle the waste is over budget, behind schedule and has faced a catalogue of problems. As the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority debates whether to renew its contract later this month, Dr Ian Hudson from NMP claims they are back on track.Inside Out is the first British TV crew to go inside the most difficult and hazardous part of Sellafield\'s decommissioning site and visit the contaminated open ponds area. But is sufficient progress being made to make the site safe?

FULL Speech and Press Conference: U.S. President Barrack Obama Speaks at NATO Summit 9/5/2014.
Obama Vows to \'Degrade and Ultimately Destroy\' ISIS
(MSNBC) President Barack Obama vowed Friday to “degrade and ultimately destroy” ISIS militants in the Middle East.
He said that NATO countries agreed on the need for immediate action against the militants, who have rampaged across Syria and Iraq. He also said that Arab states, including those with a Sunni majority, must help as well.
The president spoke from Wales at the conclusion of a NATO summit that was called to deal with Russian aggression in Ukraine but that was somewhat overshadowed by the ISIS threat.
“The goal has to be to dismantle them,” he said. He said that included bolstering Iraqi security forces and taking out ISIS leaders.
On Russia, NATO leaders approved plans earlier in the day to create a force that could mobilize quickly if any alliance country in Eastern Europe were to come under attack. NATO will also continue air patrol flights over the Baltics and other security measures.
Obama declared that “we will defend every ally.” He said the alliance had “sent a strong message to Russia that actions have consequences.”
“Russia must stop its violations of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said.
In a hopeful sign, Ukraine signed a cease-fire agreement Friday with pro-Russian rebels who have been fighting Ukrainian government forces in eastern Ukraine.

“Obviously, we are hopeful — but, based on past experience, also skeptical that in fact the separatists will follow through and the Russians will stop violating Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Obama said. “So it has to be tested.”
On ISIS, the militant group that has conquered parts of Syria and Iraq, Obama pledged: “We are going to degrade and ultimately defeat ISIL,” using a different acronym for the group.
Obama Promises to \'Deepen and Broaden\' Sanctions Against Russia.
(ABC) Hours after the Ukrainian government and pro-Russia rebels agreed to a ceasefire after five months of fighting, President Obama told reporters at the NATO Summit in Newport, Wales, today that, “Our alliance is fully united in support of Ukraine\'s sovereignty.\

As Calder Hall, it became Britain's first atomic power station in 1954 and, almost 50 years on, it is a place where high level industrial waste is reprocessed and stored. But the Nuclear Management Partners (NMP) project to tackle the waste is over budget, behind schedule and has faced a catalogue of problems. As the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority debates whether to renew its contract later this month, Dr Ian Hudson from NMP claims they are back on track.Inside Out is the first British TV crew to go inside the most difficult and hazardous part of Sellafield's decommissioning site and visit the contaminated open ponds area. But is sufficient progress being made to make the site safe?

At the epicentre of the outbreak is Kailahun, a town where aid workers are risking their lives to deal with the crisis. "We are now going to the house, and the volunteers - the Dead Body Management Team - they will proceed with the burial", explains a Red Cross worker. His boiler suited unit is responding to the unexplained death of a middle aged man. The body must be treated with all the precautions afforded to an Ebola patient. Informing the locals of what is happening to the deceased diffuses tension, and helps to defeat the fear and paranoia spreading among the shocked communities. "There's a lot of beliefs in black magic and those traditional beliefs, so people often explain things through witchcraft and curses", says Dr Richard Broome. It is up to brave volunteers and local medics to educate communities afflicted by the brutal disease. With the number of confirmed deaths increasing, it is important to focus on the few survivors who pull through the virus' 21 day cycle. The individuals and NGOs fighting and dying with their patients are now desperate for a concerted international response. BREAKING NEWS: US Strike Targets Leader of Somali Extremist Group (AP) U.S. airstrikes in Somalia may have killed the leader of the Islamic extremist group al-Shabab, with a militant commander saying Tuesday that he was in a car that was struck and that six people died. The leader, Ahmed Abdi Godane, has no heir apparent. If he has been killed, it would be a "significant blow" to al-Shabab's organization and abilities, said U.S. Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman, who confirmed the strikes targeting Godane. But Godane's death could also lead the group to ditch its association with al-Qaida and align itself with the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq, analysts said. Al-Shabab gained international notoriety a year ago this month when it attacked the upscale Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, killing at least 67 people. Godane was in one of two vehicles hit by the U.S. military strikes Monday night, said Abu Mohammed, an al-Shabab commander and spokesman. He said six militants were killed, but would not say if Godane was among them. The two vehicles were heading toward the coastal town of Barawe, al-Shabab's main base, Mohammed told The Associated Press. The U.S. strikes hit Godane after he left a meeting of the group's top leaders, said a senior Somali intelligence official. Intelligence indicated Godane "might have been killed along with other militants," said the Somali official, who spoke on condition of anonymity since he was not authorized to speak to the press. Kirby, the Pentagon spokesman, said the U.S. launched the operation based on "actionable" intelligence, and the strikes "hit what we were aiming at." But commanders were waiting to determine the outcome of the attack. The strikes on an encampment and a vehicle were conducted by special operations forces using manned and unmanned aircraft, according to Kirby. They struck using several hellfire missiles and precision-guided munitions. A witness in Somalia described ground-shaking explosions. Somali government and African Union forces heading to a town in the district heard what sounded like an "earthquake," said the governor of Somalia's Lower Shabelle region, Abdiqadir Mohamed Nor. The attack took place 105 miles (170 kilometers) south of Mogadishu in a forested area where al-Shabab trains its fighters, he said. Godane, also known as Mukhtar Abu Zubeyr, is al-Shabab's spiritual leader under whose direction the Somali militants forged an alliance with al-Qaida. In 2012 the U.S. offered a reward of up to $7 million for information leading to his arrest. If Godane has been killed, the leadership upheaval could bring al-Shabab to break away from al-Qaida and instead pledge allegiance to the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq, according to two security experts. Godane has no obvious successor and there are reports of a rift within al-Shabab over which global terror group to align with, said Matt Bryden, the head of Sahan Research in Nairobi. A struggle for power seems likely, he said. "Advanced splintering seems like a probable outcome," terrorism analyst J.M. Berger said. "If Shabab ends up exiting al-Qaida, there will be global implications for that ... but it's hard to say right now which way that will go." Godane, 37, was publicly named as leader of al-Shabab in December 2007 and has since exercised command responsibility for the group's operations across Somalia, according to the National Counterterrorism Center. Last year he was said to be in a feud with foreign militants, including an American jihadi from Alabama, Omar Hammami, who accused al-Shabab leaders of enjoying extravagant lifestyles with taxes collected from Somali residents. Hammami was killed last September following months on the run after falling out with Godane. After Monday's airstrikes, masked Islamic militants in the area arrested dozens of residents they suspected of spying for the U.S. and searched nearby homes, a resident said. "Everyone is being detained," said Mohamed Ali, who lives in Sablale district. "They even searched nearby jungles and stopped the nomads transporting milk and grass to the towns for questioning." The U.S. has carried out several airstrikes in Somalia in recent years. A missile strike in January killed a high-ranking intelligence officer for al-Shabab, and last October a vehicle carrying senior members of the group was hit in a U.S. attack that killed al-Shabab's top explosives expert. The latest U.S. action comes after Somalia's government forces regained control of a high-security prison in the capital. Seven heavily armed suspected al-Shabab members attempted on Sunday to free other extremists held there. Al Shabab is now mostly active in Somalia's rural regions after being ousted from the capital by African Union forces in 2011.

FULL Speech and Press Conference: U.S. President Barrack Obama Speaks at NATO Summit 9/5/2014. Obama Vows to 'Degrade and Ultimately Destroy' ISIS (MSNBC) President Barack Obama vowed Friday to “degrade and ultimately destroy” ISIS militants in the Middle East. Obama declared that “we will defend every ally.” He said the alliance had “sent a strong message to Russia that actions have consequences.” “Russia must stop its violations of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said. “So it has to be tested.” On ISIS, the militant group that has conquered parts of Syria and Iraq, Obama pledged: “We are going to degrade and ultimately defeat ISIL,” using a different acronym for the group. Obama Promises to 'Deepen and Broaden' Sanctions Against Russia. (ABC) Hours after the Ukrainian government and pro-Russia rebels agreed to a ceasefire after five months of fighting, President Obama told reporters at the NATO Summit in Newport, Wales, today that, “Our alliance is fully united in support of Ukraine's sovereignty." “The U.S. and Europe are finalizing measures to deepen and broaden our sanctions across Russia’s banking, energy, and defense sectors," he said. Obama announced that all NATO allies will provide security assistance to Ukraine, including support and care for Ukrainian troops. Obama reiterated that pro-Russian separatists must keep their commitments, even as European leaders plan to intensify sanctions against the Russian government and its economy. To apply pressure, Obama said the discussion at NATO and the international community's support of Ukraine has been "a testimony to how seriously people take to the principle that big countries can't just stomp on little countries." Obama’s comments come two days after he referred to the Russian advance in Ukraine as a “moment of testing” for the world, a problem that “challenges that most basic of principles of our international system, that borders cannot be redrawn at the barrel of a gun.” The usual strain in Russian-American relations was taken to an even more international stage this week after Obama visited Estonia in part to reassure the Baltic nations that America’s and Europe’s interests are also theirs, that Russian encroachments on sovereign nations would not evade the attention of Western nations. “An attack on one is an attack on all, and so if, in such a moment, you ever ask again, ‘Who’ll come to help?’ you’ll know the answer: the NATO alliance, including the armed forces of the United States of America,” he told a gathering of almost 2,000 Estonians. On Thursday, Obama, UK Prime Minister David Cameron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President François Hollande, and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi met with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in a display of fraternity. Obama and Cameron published a joint editorial in the London Times Thursday making clear to Russia the determination of NATO allies in defending one another. Both leaders support a NATO rapid-response force “that could deploy anywhere in the world at very short notice,” something Obama confirmed at his news conference today. In Mongolia on Thursday, in an act seemingly aimed at responding to the activity in Wales, Russian President Vladimir Putin displayed a notebook on which he wrote a seven-point plan peace plan intended to appeal to the ceasefire negotiations. Speaking to reporters next to a golf course in Wales this morning, Poroshenko clarified and confirmed today’s ceasefire news. The agreement was settled upon in Minsk, Belarus, where the Ukrainian and pro-Russian camps met to design a truce after suffering more than 2,600 deaths since the fighting began.
