He needed to trust her with his secret. She had to trust him with her life.
Ed Leland: What I was going to ask you to do is stand up, turn around, and close your eyes and tell me everything you see in the room. It's an observation test. Do you really have a problem with that?::Linda Voss: Pictures of sailboats and polo ponies; fancy books and diplomas; stuffed fish on the wall; calendar set to the wrong date; bookcases that need dusting; carpets that need cleaning; and a couple of guys from Harvard who are surprised that a girl who needs a job won't be treated like a slave.
Marguerite Von Eberstein: Except for you, I have no use for Jews.
Ed Leland: [seeing Linda for the first time in six months after their passionate affair, and he has come strolling in with a stunning brunette] You can come work for me while I'm here, I can always use a good secretary.::Linda Voss: This is all so civilized, Edward. That's what you like, isn't it? Civilized people, polite ladies with pedigrees who look good at the opera, and never make you laugh too hard, and never make you feel too much. I've had a lot of time to think about this and don't tell me it's the war, when I've been waiting for six months to hear whether you're dead or alive and you waltz into a nightclub.::Ed Leland: Linda, I came in last night and I was going to call you.::Linda Voss: Oh, go to hell.::[He grabs her arm]::Linda Voss: Careful, Ed. You might have to admit you know me.::Ed Leland: Linda, it is the war.::Linda Voss: You're so noble, Ed.::Ed Leland: Did I promise you something? If I did, I'd like to know.::Army SSG in Canteen: Excuse me sir, I thought the young lady might like to dance.::Ed Leland: The lady is busy.::Linda Voss: I'd love to dance::[she starts dancing with soldier]::Ed Leland: I'm cutting in.::Linda Voss: Don't let him.::Army SSG in Canteen: Excuse me sir, but I don't think the young lady wants to dance with you.::Ed Leland: Don't try it, or I'll leave here with your Adam's Apple in my pocket.::Linda Voss: What do you want from me?::Ed Leland: I want you to stop feeling sorry for yourself.::Linda Voss: No, you want me to stop feeling, like you... You did love me, didn't you? I couldn't have been wrong.::Ed Leland: You weren't.::Linda Voss: Well then how do you stop, or want to?::[crying]
Linda Voss: If you don't let me go, I'll quit!::Ed Leland: I'll miss you.
Horst Drescher: [chewing raw dove] Delicious. Makes me feel like a volf. [laughs] [then gulps with a sick look on his face]
Franze-Otto Dietrich: [from car to Linda Voss who is walking alone and has just been fired by Horst Drescher] It's me, ze zoup. [points to his chest where Linda Voss had spilled soup on him earlier during the dinner] He dismissed you?::Linda Voss: Yes::Franze-Otto Dietrich: Ze doves were raw.::Linda Voss: I had no time, I arrived at 6:00.::Franze-Otto Dietrich: [talking to Linda Voss about Horst Drescher and the dinner of raw dove] He ate ze whole thing to pwove it was edible. [laughs] You should have seen him. Pompous little ass. Eating a raw bird. [shakes his head]
Ed Leland: [she lights a cigarette] When did start smoking?::Linda Voss: I don't know.::Ed Leland: That was a silly thing to do, don't you think?::Linda Voss: I'm a silly girl. Ed. I think you're living proof of that.
Linda Voss: To my father I spoke German. But he warned me to keep this language a secret, because outside of our neighborhood in Queens New York, if people heard me speak German they would either think that I was a Nazi sympathizer, or they would know I was a Jew.
Ed Leland: [being interviewed] Your grandmother, she insists you speak...::Linda Voss: German? She doesn't speak English.::Ed Leland: She's lived here for...::Linda Voss: My sixth grade teacher used to do that.::Ed Leland: Beg your pardon?::Linda Voss: Used to start a question and not finish it. Like, "the capital of Indiana is..."
Linda Voss: [reciting what she has noticed in the room] Pictures of sailing boats and polo ponies, fancy books and diplomas, stuffed fish on the wall, calendar set to the wrong date, bookcases that are dusty, carpets that need cleaning, and a couple of guys from Harvard who are surprised that a girl who needs a job won't be treated like a slave.::Ed Leland: Are always like this?::Linda Voss: I forgot to tell you, my other half's Irish.::Ed Leland: Lethal combination.

They moved into a new mine way over the next kingdom!::Snow White: Well, then, who are you?::Muddy: We're their cousins, the seven dwarfelles! They gave us their cottage!
Critterina: [Snow White and the seven Dwarfelles camp around a campfire in the Realm of Doom. A lizard-like creature goes up to a rock beside Critterina and squawks] Nice little lu, lo, er thing. [Critterina tries to touch the lizard but it almost bites her finger. Critterina moves away her finger in the nick of time] Now, now! Mother Nature wouldn't like that!
Sunburn: Huh. Talkin' looking glasses, tricky queens, secret doors, this place burns me up!
Muddy: Oooh, it's about time something good happened on this trip! Ahehehehehee!
The Prince: I've never seen such magic as this. Who are you, what do you want!
[Inside a cave leading to the Realm of Doom, the Shadow Man lands a boulder on Snow White and the seven dwarfelles to prevent them going to Lord Maliss' castle]::Muddy: Hey, look, there's someone in the shadows!::[the Shadow Man, seen at the very top of a ledge, backs away]::Sunburn: Hey! Hey, who was he, there he goes!::Muddy: Get that Shadow Man!
Plot
Here are some events in the eight months following the college graduation of two of a trio of buddies. It's that time when events are likely to become "heavier" than those of a student, such as deepening relationships with partners, parents, pals and employers.
Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an annual plant native to the Americas. It possesses a large inflorescence (flowering head). The sunflower is named after its huge, fiery blooms, whose shape and image is often used to depict the sun. The sunflower has a rough, hairy stem, broad, coarsely toothed, rough leaves and circular heads of flowers. The heads consist of many individual flowers which mature into seeds, often in the hundreds, on a receptacle base. From the Americas, sunflower seeds were brought to Europe in the 16th century, where, along with sunflower oil, they became a widespread cooking ingredient. Leaves of the sunflower can be used as cattle feed, while the stems contain a fibre which may be used in paper production.
What is usually called the "flower" on a mature sunflower is actually a "flower head" (also known as a "composite flower") of numerous florets, (small flowers) crowded together. The outer petal-bearing florets are the sterile ray florets and can be yellow, red, orange, or other colors. The florets inside the circular head are called disc florets, which mature into seeds.
Paul Yoon (born 1980 New York City) is an American short story writer.
He attended Phillips Exeter Academy, and Wesleyan University. He lives in Boston.
His work has appeared in One Story, Ploughshares,TriQuarterly, Glimmer Train,American Short Fiction.
Islands have often proved fertile ground for fiction. From Prospero's conjured dreamscape to the allegoric atoll of "Lord of the Flies," remote shores can be ideal test sites for the vagaries of human behavior. Utopian, dystopian, fantastic or mundane, they rise from the sea less as landmasses than as literary metaphors. Yet the island in Paul Yoon's "Once the Shore" manages to be both: a rich, fully realized place and a common thread that links its residents through history and time.
When I first encountered Paul Yoon’s story, “Once the Shore,” the opening piece in Best American Short Stories 2006, I felt the rush of a new discovery. In the first paragraph, a woman tells a waiter how her husband parted his hair. “There was a time,” the woman said, “when he bathed for me and me alone.”
Enrico Nicola "Henry" Mancini (April 16, 1924 – June 14, 1994) was an American composer, conductor and arranger, best remembered for his film and television scores. He won a record number of Grammy Awards (20), plus a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award posthumously in 1995. His best-known works include the jazz-idiom theme to The Pink Panther film series ("The Pink Panther Theme"), the Peter Gunn Theme from the television series, and back-to-back Academy Awards for the songs "Moon River" from the Blake Edwards film Breakfast at Tiffany's and "Days of Wine and Roses" from Edwards' film Days of Wine and Roses. He also composed the score of famous films such as Charade, The Great Race, Wait Until Dark or Silver Streak.
Mancini was born in the Little Italy neighborhood of Cleveland, and grew up near Pittsburgh, in the steel town of West Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. His parents emigrated from the Abruzzo region of Italy. Mancini's father, Quinto, (born March 13, 1893, Scanno, Italy) was a steelworker, who made his only child begin piccolo lessons at the age of eight. When Mancini was 12 years old, he began piano lessons. Quinto and Henry played flute together in the Aliquippa Italian immigrant band, "Sons of Italy". After graduating from Aliquippa High School in 1942, Mancini attended the renowned Juilliard School of Music in New York. In 1943, after roughly one year at Juilliard, his studies were interrupted when he was drafted into the United States Army. In 1945, he participated in the liberation of a concentration camp in southern Germany.
Paul Weller (born 25 May 1958) is an English singer-songwriter. Starting with the band The Jam (1972–1982), Weller then went on to branch out musically to a more soulful style with The Style Council (1983–1989). In 1991 he established himself as a successful solo artist, and continues to remain a respected singer, lyricist and guitarist.
Despite widespread critical recognition, Weller has remained a national rather than an international star, and much of his songwriting is rooted in English culture. He is also the principal figure of the 1970s and 80s mod revival and is often referred to as the Modfather.
Weller was born on 25 May 1958 in Sheerwater, near Woking, Surrey, England, to John and Ann Weller. He was initially known as John William Weller but later acquired the name Paul.
His father worked as a taxi driver and his mother was a part-time cleaner. In 1963 Weller started his education at Maybury County First School. His love of music started with The Beatles, then The Who and the Small Faces. By the time Weller was eleven and moving up to secondary school at Sheerwater County Secondary music was the biggest part of his life and he began playing the guitar.
I was born in Texas
I was bred in Kansas
When I get married I'll be wed in Kansas
There's a true blue gal who promised she would wait
She's a sunflower from the Sunflower State
She's a sunflower, she's my sunflower
And I know we'll never part
She's my sunflower, she's my one flower
She's a flower of my heart
I was fair in Kansas, clouds are rare in Kansas
Never saw a place that could compare with Kansas
So I'm going home to keep a wedding date
With a sunflower from the Sunflower State
She's a sunflower, she's my sunflower
And I know we'll never part
She's a sunflower, she's my one flower
All I gotta do is think of you
All I gotta do is think of you
I don't care how long this lasts
We have no future, we have no past
I write this now while I'm in control
I'll choose the words and how the melody goes
Along winding streets we walked hand in hand
And how I long for that sharp wind to take my breath away again
I'd run my fingers through your hair
Hair like a wheat field, I'd run through, that I'd run through
And I miss you so, and I miss you so
Now you're gone, I feel so alone
Oh I miss you so
I'd send you a flower, a sunflower bright
'Cause you cloud my days messing up my nights
And all the way up to the top of your head
Sun shower kisses, I felt we had
And I miss you so, oh baby I miss you so
Now you're gone, I feel so low, oh I miss you so, I do
But I miss you so, oh darling I miss you so
Now you're gone, I feel so low, low, oh I said, ?I miss you so?
All I gotta do is think of you, oh and I miss you so
Baby I'm, I'm afraid to say why, oh that I miss you so
If you see your brother standing by the road
with the heavy load from the seeds he sowed
and if you see your sister falling by the way
why don't you stop and say:
You're on the wrong way!
But you've got to try a little kindness
you show a little kindness
but you shine your light for every one to see
But if you try a little kindness
then you'll overlook the blindness
of the narrow minded people
on the narrow minded street
And don't you walk around the down and out
just lend a helping hand and settle.down
And the kindness that .you show every day
it's gonna help someone along life's way
But you've got to try a little kindness..
[Lenny Kravitz]
You're, making it feel that everything is alright
You're my sunflower, you're my sunflower
In a world that's crumbling, all around us everyday
You are, all the inspiration that I need to find my way
How long I've been yearning, for the day I find my one true love
Now that you are here my darling, I want you to stay (I want you to stay)
You're, making it feel that everything is alright
You're my sunflower, you're my sunflower
You're, making it feel that everything is alright
You're my sunflower, you're my sunflower
Whenever you call me, I'll be there with no delay, my love
Even when I'm miles away girl, my heart will be there (I'll be right there)
Any conversation that you want to have, you'll have my ear
You can tell me all your secrets, they'll be safe my dear
You're, making it feel that everything is alright
You're my sunflower, you're my sunflower
You're, making it feel that everything is alright
You're my sunflower, you're my sunflower
[Drake]
I'm not that good with words, but I'ma try my best
Look, I don't ever wanna make you mad girl
I just wanna have a seed, you know the things young men are hesitant to
Have girl
A little you a little me and someone else, good lord that's a winner right
There
But we really got a story to tell, it can't finish right there
I used to wonder what my old girl doing right now
Ever since you came into my life
Everytime I think it'd be good to call her
I just think about you and it'd make me think twice, ah yeah
I know we've been through a couple things
You know a couple things, what are we to do
But you make me feel good, you love me for me and you love me for you
Come on
[Chorus]
You're, making it feel that everything is alright (it's gon be alright)
You're my sunflower, you're my sunflower
You're, making it feel that everything is alright

Sunflower, blooming in your finest hour
You have come into your power
And you spill it over me
Such petals, standing shameless in the air
Catch the eyes of other lovers
With the colors that you wear
I have only seen you grow
From the seed I used to know
In the burning breath of summer
The garden's afterglow
Sunflower, just the way you speak my name
I will never be the same, oh yeah
Sunflower, never steal your eyes away
Even when the seasons change
A little sun, a little rain
I have only seen you grow
From the seed I used to know
In the burning breath of summer
And the garden's afterglow
Sunflower, a little sun, a little rain
Even when the seasons change
Sunflower, even when the seasons change
When they found your body
Giant X's on your eyes
With your half of the ransom
You bought some sweet, sweet, sweet
Sweet sunflowers
And gave them
To the night
Underneath the Star of David
A hundred years behind my eyes
And with my half of the ransom
I bought some sweet, sweet, sweet
Sweet sunflowers
And gave them
To the night
Sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet sunflowers [x4]
And gave them
Waiting in the darkness
Facing the consequences of my actions
Then I saw you
Glowing, brighter than the mystery
Embedded in your golden eyes
Beauty, love me
Take me farther than I've been waiting for you
Sunflower to feel me
Wanted farther than before mystery
Embedded in your flawless touch
You're the only one
You're the only one

Sunflower smiling at the sun
Your time is gonna' come
Keep your eyes on sunny skies
Your heart soars above the clouds
Sings a song out loud
For a brand new day - not so far away
Isn't it amazing - what you see
Isn't it amazing - what you do
Isn't it amazing - everything
Sunflowers in spring - they're just like you
Sunflower wipe away your tears
All your doubts and fears
You were born to fly - so high
Sunflower everybody knows
You're the one that grows in a sunny place
All I want is to be your sunflower
To watch over you from up high
When the wind blows
I will kiss you like sunshine
Stealing pieces from a perfect sky
'Cause here you go again
'Cause here you go again
And they say, that it really doesn't matter
Anyway
That it really doesn't matter
Anyway, alright
I'm not asking to be more than your lover
I'm not asking to be more than a friend
I'm not asking anything that I shouldn't
To bring everything we know to an end
'Cause here you go again
'Cause here you go again
And they say, that it really doesn't matter
Anyway
That it really doesn't matter
Anyway
'Cause here you go
And I wanted to be your lover
But you're pushing me under cover
I wanted to be your lover
But you're pushing me down
Pushing me down under covers, yeah
Because here you go again
And they say, that it really doesn't matter
Anyway
That it really doesn't matter
Anyway
That it really doesn't matter
Anyway
That it really doesn't matter
When I stumble
Yeah, I'm the one whose lame
If you fall down
Why call out my name?
Your mouth it moves to call my name
When you go down
You got no one else to blame
Unless I'll make you somehow know I feel the same
Unless you put us down again, I'll give the same
So what?
And if you fail you'll say that I'm to blame
Yeah, right
Hey, Sunflower
When I stumble
Yeah, it comes as no surprise
Convince yourself
With your little lies
Your mouth it moves to form your lies
Instead of crying, why don't you get wise?
Unless you rate me so much, now I feel the same??
Unless you put us down again, I'll give the same
Who cares?
And if you fail you'll say that I'm to blame
Yeah, right
Yeah, Sunflower
Can't put out
And you won't shut up
Can't put out
And you won't shut up
If I poisoned you
Oh, tell me I'm to blame
If you live or die
To me it's all the same
Hey, Sunflower, can't you...
Grow in a mind up there, we're the same (??)
Unless you make your summer now I feel the same
Unless you put us down again, I'll give the same
Who cares?
And if you fail you'll say that I'm to blame
Yeah, right
Oh, Sunflower
Give a little garden for the growing seeds
There's gotta be someone who'll pull the weeds
You come to insult a man of my wealth
The only harm done, you did to yourself
You're sinking, you're falling, you're failing
If you're wondering why she's not calling anymore, it's cause you bring her back to the place that she feels she belongs, with the kiss of a fly and you're crying on the phone, it's cause you can't get back down from space and you're floating alone, so far from home, so far from here, sunflower lawn, sunflower disappear, my god what have we done, oh my god what have we done, like the leaves in the trees all the answers falling down, little bug in the stream lets the rainwater wash her away, to the edge of the earth, where she reaches hollow ground, let the buzz of her wings make a song that we all want to play, the stone that she's been under, all the phones will drown no wonder, it rang and no-one answered, now you're stranded, so far from home, so far from here, sunflower alone, sunflower disappear, my god what have we done, oh my god what have we done, i've been swallowed up by light, and i've lost my wings used to fly, just like little bees in a hive, we'll always need a queen to survive, so far from home, so far from here, with a little bit of hope, you see a little light appear, so far from home, sunflower disappear, my god what have we done, oh my god what have they done, oh my god what have they done.
The sun goes down, the lights go out
You go to sleep and dream about
What you wanna be when you're grown
Every day they steal your prayers
You keep your secret hidden from them far away
And you never share what you know
Dream what you are, you sunflower
Be what you are, sunflower
Your father said it's in your head
He knew someone who knew someone
Who wound up dead, we all wind up dead
We all wind up dead and you know
The shadows start to steal your heart
They get inside and piece by piece
They tear apart your very soul
And your very art and you know
So turn and face the sun again
Dream what you are, you sunflower
Rise up and face the sun again
Be what you are, you sun flower
We always run towards the sun
You lead us on and cut us down, you cannot run
From the damage done and there's damage done
And you know
We'll turn and face the sun again
Dream what you are, you sunflower
Rise up and face the sun again
Be what you are, you sunflower
So turn and face the sun again
Dream what you are you sunflower
Rise up and face the sun again
Be what you are, you sunflower
grow grow little sunflower/plant grow
