York Boat Practice on the North Saskatchewan With Fort Edmonton Park Interpreters

"By the way: if you lose your oar, you're going in after it." York boats were used to ship goods all across Rupert's Land - what is now Central and Western Canada - by the Hudson's Bay Company during the height of the fur trade in the early 19th century. That beaver followed the shoreline parallel to us for about ten minutes... and was actually faster than all of us rowing hard together. You may have escaped us this time, little beaver, but soon you'll make a nice hat! I unearthed this video on an old memory stick; it depicts an after hours York Boat practice on the North Saskatchewan River at Fort Edmonton Park. The park's boat builder, visible in the first few seconds of the shot, is at the rudder of this reconstructed vessel. The rowers are all park interpreters - those you normally see in costume. I was taking a break from rowing to film: at York boat practice, it's all hands on deck!
