New Shelling Shakes Ukraine Truce
Just 36 hours after Ukraine reached a ceasefire agreement with pro-Russian rebels on Friday, eastern Ukraine was hit with new shelling. On Sunday, shelling struck the city of Mariupol, killing one woman, and another round hit the Donetsk airport. The Donetsk rebels’ official Twitter account said early Sunday morning that its forces were “taking Mariupol” but later accused Ukraine of breaking the ceasefire. There appeared to be minor violations of the ceasefire on Saturday, but this recent mortar fire could potentially cause the ceasefire to collapse. Approximately 2,600 people have died in the fighting in eastern Ukraine since April.
