Tuvalu (
i/tuːˈvɑːluː/ too-VAH-loo or /ˈtuːvəluː/ TOO-və-loo), formerly known as the Ellice Islands, is a Polynesian island nation located in the Pacific Ocean, midway between Hawaii and Australia. It comprises three reef islands and six true atolls spread out between the latitude of 5° to 10° south and longitude of 176° to 180°, west of the International Date Line.
Its nearest neighbours are Kiribati, Nauru, Samoa and Fiji. Tuvalu has a population of 10,837 (2012 census). The total land area of the islands of Tuvalu is 26 square kilometres (10 sq mi).
The first inhabitants of Tuvalu were Polynesians. The pattern of settlement that is believed to have occurred is that the Polynesians spread out from Samoa and Tonga into the Tuvaluan atolls, with Tuvalu providing a stepping stone to migration into the Polynesian Outlier communities in Melanesia and Micronesia.
In 1568, Spanish navigator Álvaro de Mendaña was the first European to sail through the archipelago, sighting the island of Nui during his expedition in search of Terra Australis. In 1819 the island of Funafuti was named Ellice's Island; the name Ellice was applied to all nine islands after the work of English hydrographer Alexander George Findlay. The islands came under Britain's sphere of influence in the late 19th century, when each of the Ellice Islands was declared a British Protectorate by Captain Gibson of HMS Curacoa between 9 and 16 October 1892. The Ellice Islands were administered as British protectorate by a Resident Commissioner from 1892 to 1916 as part of the British Western Pacific Territories (BWPT), and then as part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony from 1916 to 1974.

Tuvalu (film)
Tuvalu is a 1999 experimental movie from Germany. The style evokes early 20th Century Silent movies and motifs commonly found in German expressionism. The sparse dialog is presented in a mix of European languages. The film stars Denis Lavant as Anton and Chulpan Khamatova as Eva.
The film focuses on Anton as he tries to win the heart of Eva and save his family's bath house from the wrecking ball.

Tuvalu (band)
Tuvalu is a Finnish band, founded in 2003 in Tampere-Helsinki-axis. They gained recognition with their debut EP Mitä muut ajattelevat sinusta? in 2004. The band was named after Veit Helmer's movie and the island nation with the same name.
The first album "Pimeä saartaa meitä!" was released in 2006. Rumba called the album "a stylish debut" but criticised the lyrics. Aamulehti gave the album 4/5 stars.
In 2008 the album "Viimeiset hetket ovat käsillä!" was released.
The band has stated that Tuvalu's music will not be played in radios in an act against Finnish music business.

Yep, I travelled to what the internet deems the least visited country in the world. The reality is that the statistics behind this are far from perfect. Many of these small countries don't actually count how many people come visit. So it's very hard to really tell which country truly has the least visitors. Either way, I went to Tuvalu, which is somewhere in the bottom of the list... and my experience was shocking.

Time & Tide - Documentary Feature
A group of expatriates from the nation of Tuvalu returns home after 20 years to find their homeland facing irreversible tragedies - consequences of both globalization and global warming. Completed at the end of 2005, "Time & Tide" was one of the earliest docs to tell the tale of climate change. It won multiple festival awards during the 2006 film festival season, including the Golden Orchid Award for Best Documentary at the Hawaii International Film Festival, and afterwards played on PBS for 7 years. Talofa. Hello. We are pleased and grateful to share this 72-minute film with the world.
Two Returned Peace Corps Volunteers return to the small Pacific island country of Tuvalu 37 years after the conclusion of their service. Scott and Myra bring their now adult sons to Nukulaelae, an island of roughly 300 people, to experience the unique and beautiful culture of the place they called home for nearly 3 years. On their journey they face unpredictable travel schedules by sea and forces of nature that almost prevent them from reaching their coveted destination. Through challenges of uncertainty the family turns to their Tuvaluan friends, appreciating the beauty of the islands and catching up on a generation of missed time together. This is a story of human empathy and the value of cultural exchange, as well as a philosophical look into mankind’s relationship with nature, the prospect of climate change, and a celebration of the Peace Corps.
Directed and narrated by their youngest son, Nick, this is an attempt to tell a deeply personal story with far fewer resources than a typical documentary film. All images are from a GoPro camera, a Mavic Mini drone, old photographs from the 1980’s, and recent cell phone footage of tropical weather events.

Talofa. Hello. We are pleased and grateful to share this 72-minute film with the world.
Two Returned Peace Corps Volunteers return to the small Pacific island country of Tuvalu 37 years after the conclusion of their service. Scott and Myra bring their now adult sons to Nukulaelae, an island of roughly 300 people, to experience the unique and beautiful culture of the place they called home for nearly 3 years. On their journey they face unpredictable travel schedules by sea and forces of nature that almost prevent them from reaching their coveted destination. Through challenges of uncertainty the family turns to their Tuvaluan friends, appreciating the beauty of the islands and catching up on a generation of missed time together. This is a story of human empathy and the value of cultural exchange, as well as a philosophical look into mankind’s relationship with nature, the prospect of climate change, and a celebration of the Peace Corps.
Directed and narrated by their youngest son, Nick, this is an attempt to tell a deeply personal story with far fewer resources than a typical documentary film. All images are from a GoPro camera, a Mavic Mini drone, old photographs from the 1980’s, and recent cell phone footage of tropical weather events.

Tuvalu is a nation of nine islands amounting to 27 square kilometres of land and 9,000 people. Taliu Eli is aboard the inter-island supply ship, Nivanga, as it steams from island to island, transporting cargo and passengers. In each port of call there is time to talk with the islanders and discover their social, political and economic concerns. At Funafuti, the Queen’s visit is the highlight, but Taliu takes the opportunity to interview the Prime Minister and other leaders of Tuvalu. The interviews are in English or in Tuvaluan with Taliu’s voice-over in English. This is the first English language film made in Tuvalu and was funded by the Australian Development Assistance Bureau as part of Australia’s aid to this central Pacific nation.

It won multiple festival awards during the 2006 film festival season, including the Golden Orchid Award for Best Documentary at the Hawaii International Film Festival, and afterwards played on PBS for 7 years.

The 4th smallest country in the world, it has an average elevation of just a few metres above sea level. This makes it especially vulnerable to sea level rise, coastal erosion and flooding which continues to threaten its 11,000 residents.

Yep, I travelled to what the internet deems the least visited country in the world. The reality is that the statistics behind this are far from perfect. Many of these small countries don't actually count how many people come visit. So it's very hard to really tell which country truly has the least visitors. Whatever the outcome of those talks - some countries are still facing an existential threat - like the tiny Pacific Islands that make up the nation of Tuvalu. They want the world to recognise that they will be subsumed by the waves - but while their appeals have gone unheard, they've turned to finding their own solution.

Coordinates: 8°S 178°E / 8°S 178°E / -8; 178
Tuvalu (i/tuːˈvɑːluː/ too-VAH-loo or /ˈtuːvəluː/ TOO-və-loo), formerly known as the Ellice Islands, is a Polynesian island nation located in the Pacific Ocean, midway between Hawaii and Australia. It comprises three reef islands and six true atolls spread out between the latitude of 5° to 10° south and longitude of 176° to 180°, west of the International Date Line.
Its nearest neighbours are Kiribati, Nauru, Samoa and Fiji. Tuvalu has a population of 10,837 (2012 census). The total land area of the islands of Tuvalu is 26 square kilometres (10 sq mi).
The first inhabitants of Tuvalu were Polynesians. The pattern of settlement that is believed to have occurred is that the Polynesians spread out from Samoa and Tonga into the Tuvaluan atolls, with Tuvalu providing a stepping stone to migration into the Polynesian Outlier communities in Melanesia and Micronesia.
In 1568, Spanish navigator Álvaro de Mendaña was the first European to sail through the archipelago, sighting the island of Nui during his expedition in search of Terra Australis. In 1819 the island of Funafuti was named Ellice's Island; the name Ellice was applied to all nine islands after the work of English hydrographer Alexander George Findlay. The islands came under Britain's sphere of influence in the late 19th century, when each of the Ellice Islands was declared a British Protectorate by Captain Gibson of HMS Curacoa between 9 and 16 October 1892. The Ellice Islands were administered as British protectorate by a Resident Commissioner from 1892 to 1916 as part of the British Western Pacific Territories (BWPT), and then as part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony from 1916 to 1974.

Talofa. Hello. We are pleased and grateful to share this 72-minute film with the world.
Two Returned Peace Corps Volunteers return to the small Pacific island country of Tuvalu 37 years after the conclusion of their service. Scott and Myra bring their now adult sons to Nukulaelae, an island of roughly 300 people, to experience the unique and beautiful culture of the place they called home for nearly 3 years. On their journey they face unpredictable travel schedules by sea and forces of nature that almost prevent them from reaching their coveted destination. Through challenges of uncertainty the family turns to their Tuvaluan friends, appreciating the beauty of the islands and catching up on a generation of missed time together. This is a story of human empathy and the value of cultural exchange, as well as a philosophical look into mankind’s relationship with nature, the prospect of climate change, and a celebration of the Peace Corps.
Directed and narrated by their youngest son, Nick, this is an attempt to tell a deeply personal story with far fewer resources than a typical documentary film. All images are from a GoPro camera, a Mavic Mini drone, old photographs from the 1980’s, and recent cell phone footage of tropical weather events.

He's lonely and unsophisticated, and he falls in love with the beautiful Eva, who comes to bathe with her father. When Eva and her father lose their home, they come to the bathhouse to stay, but bits of the ceiling fall on the old man and he dies. Eva blames Anton, and she seems to seek the arms of the brute Gregor. Can Anton win back her heart, get the bathhouse through a rigorous government inspection, and help keep his parents employed? Waiting out there somewhere is the paradise isle of Tuvalu.

From the Film Australia Collection. Made by Film Australia 1983. Directed by Stanley Dalby. The first visit of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to the new Pacific nation of Tuvalu (formerly the Ellice Islands) brings Taliu Eli, a 21-year-old primary school teacher from her island of Nui to the main island of Funafuti to take part in the celebrations of the Royal visit. Tuvalu is a nation of nine islands amounting to 27 square kilometres of land and 9,000 people. Taliu Eli is aboard the inter-island supply ship, Nivanga, as it steams from island to island, transporting cargo and passengers. In each port of call there is time to talk with the islanders and discover their social, political and economic concerns. At Funafuti, the Queen’s visit is the highlight, but Taliu takes the opportunity to interview the Prime Minister and other leaders of Tuvalu. The interviews are in English or in Tuvaluan with Taliu’s voice-over in English. This is the first English language film made in Tuvalu and was funded by the Australian Development Assistance Bureau as part of Australia’s aid to this central Pacific nation.

A group of expatriates from the nation of Tuvalu returns home after 20 years to find their homeland facing irreversible tragedies - consequences of both globalization and global warming.
Completed at the end of 2005, "Time & Tide" was one of the earliest docs to tell the tale of climate change. It won multiple festival awards during the 2006 film festival season, including the Golden Orchid Award for Best Documentary at the Hawaii International Film Festival, and afterwards played on PBS for 7 years.
We've uploaded it here on our page in honor of its 15 year anniversary. (At the moment, it is not streaming anywhere else.) We invite you to enter a world few have ever known, or will ever know - the South Pacific nation of Tuvalu.

About Tuvalu: Tuvalu, in the South Pacific, is an independent island nation within the British Commonwealth. Its 9 islands comprise small, thinly populated atolls and reef islands with palm-fringed beaches and WWII sites. Off Funafuti, the capital, the Funafuti Conservation Area offers calm waters for diving and snorkelling among sea turtles and tropical fish, plus several uninhabited islets sheltering sea birds. // Tuvalu (/tuːˈvɑːluː/ (listen) too-VAH-loo), formerly known as the Ellice Islands, is an island country in the Polynesian subregion of Oceania in the Pacific Ocean. Its islands are situated about midway between Hawaii and Australia. They lie east-northeast of the Santa Cruz Islands (which belong to the Solomon Islands), northeast of Vanuatu, southeast of Nauru, south of Kiribati, west of Tokelau, northwest of Samoa and Wallis and Futuna, and north of Fiji. Tuvalu is composed of three reef islands and six atolls. They are spread out between the latitude of 5° and 10° south and between the longitude of 176° and 180°. They lie west of the International Date Line. Tuvalu has a population of 11,204. The total land area of the islands of Tuvalu is 26 square kilometres (10 sq mi). The first inhabitants of Tuvalu were Polynesians, according to well-established theories regarding a migration of Polynesians into the Pacific that began about three thousand years ago. Long before European contact with the Pacific islands, Polynesians frequently voyaged by canoe between the islands. Polynesian navigation skills enabled them to make elaborately planned journeys in either double-hulled sailing canoes or outrigger canoes. Scholars believe that the Polynesians spread out from Samoa and Tonga into the Tuvaluan atolls, which then served as a stepping stone for further migration into the Polynesian outliers in Melanesia and Micronesia.
