Behind the Curtain
This is the story of a walk-in.
Life on Earth in 2012 suffers from countless apocalyptic crises, one being that of the extinction of natural human beauty. If true beauty disappears from the gene pool, it will catastrophically affect the delicate macrocosmic tapestry of Creation. One female is chosen to house the blueprint of true beauty in her body.
______
TEXT:
I never know until I look behind the curtain. I see deep inside, right through me, to my roots. Grounding upward to expose only me. I face myself but I get stuck between the lines. I feel the weight of gravity push me down. Deeper into me I go.
When I open my eyes, I am immersed in nothing but myself and I begin to remember who I am, surrounded by everything that ever was and ever will be. Flowing through space and time. Drenched in divine treasures beyond measure.
With the gentlest touch, I can make the world turn.
The choice was mine to make. I snuck inside a tunnel from before and carved a shape out for myself. Shrouded in sweat and skin, time let me in. A secret I remain. My beauty is not in vain.
Never is there an end. So, in the beginning, to Earth I descend.
My cradle rocked as I wept in a midnight cave, shoved between heaven's gates.
Covered in the heavy silk of silence, my face cannot hide my soul, as much as I want it to, I will always be a bleached tiger with pollinated ebony lips and dead white hot enamel eyes. In the shadows of my plastered, alabaster pallor of sulphur on celluloid, intrepid is the lush dark velvet of the lunar night.
I am a porcelain pierrot, the doyenne of the harlequins, the jester of jest. It's the song of the jongleur I sing, for I am the master of ceremonies.
The sting of your kirlian kiss makes me glow from within. With the grandeur of allegory, chiaroscuro is all I'm left with.
So I looked behind the curtain and I saw the future. My roots shoot through every universe. Through my crystal ball I see hieroglyphs flow through my body. Dizzied with my myth of truth, the Light of Knowing speaks to me. I am a programmed totem. I dance the dance of density with metallic curtained memories. Won't you come and dance with me?
I almost lose my grip. Lost in a lonesome land. One level below Zero.
Sometimes, I just feel screwed.
Stuck in caverns of fake desire, I get scorched by the torches of electric fire.
Through me the Blue Light shines. Seismic blueprints shrink to match the thermophile.
Now I know my feelings are superimposed. Let me not forget it was me whom they chose. Some may mistake me for an impassive beauty. But what they see pales in comparison to what I know to be me.
Again I begin picking up the shards of my shattered self. Sparks of light ignite my life.
They beam through me only for a moment. Then they're gone.
Applause. Aplomb. I fall through the cracks. Contortion. Refraction.
Dripping with hope diamonds of infinite facets.
Eons of time pass in a blink. Cycles of life start and end faster than we think.
Alas, I touch the iron curtain and it melts in my hands.
What an illusion to think it could forever separate alien lands.
I see right through it all. I see down to the bones.
Did you ever notice that time seems to loop and overlap? Time can be cut with a knife, or else you'll lose your way and fall back into its trap.

"Substance" Movie Fundraising Trailer
Zoe Miller is the idealistic, "straight-edge" 23 year-old "shoegazer" guitarist with a troubled past. To further her musical career, Zoe convinces her bassist boyfriend Jake Reed and slacker drummer Bill "Trippy" Hansen to play at the SXSW Music Festival. With no money and even fewer connections, they consent to drive a jet-setting Texas billionaire's white Cadillac from New York City to Dallas through a drive-away car service and soon find themselves stranded in Big D for 3 days and nights. Forced to befriend 2 nouveau riche douchebags who get the band embroiled in an underground ecstasy ring and beguiled by the decadent lifestyles of their scheming Texas hosts, the band go on the run to New Orleans.
At heart, the story of “Substance” is set against the backdrop of something I care very deeply about: the independent or “indie” rock music scene. To be even more specific, I am obsessed with British indie pop, rock, and electronica. In this story, the conflicts of the protagonist rocker Zoe Miller are examined as she tries to navigate through the difficulties of being a flawed human being because of a less-than-idyllic upbring against the idealism of the “never selling out” mantra which she has placed onto a pedestal. The inability to never let go of that ideal, ironically, is at the heart of Zoe’s own self-destruction. Because Zoe is in a sense an alter ego for me, this project is about the conflict and awe I have with the ethos embodied through this milieu in my quest to “be real” and how that struggle sometimes makes me feel like a fraud while at other times gives me strength. Furthermore, the story is a subtle examination of class issues in America literally through the lens of one of the most universally-accepted forms of storytelling.
The title of “Substance” is an homage to 3 sources: 1.) Factory Records (UK) seminal musical act Joy Division/New Order and the art they cross-pollinated through video, graphic design, and music (including their 1987 singles album of the same name). 2.) The illegal substance ecstasy trade which serves as the major sub-plot of the script when the band’s journey to the music fest is detoured and they are forced to go “on the run to New Orleans.” 3.) The search for people of “Substance” for whom Zoe has lost faith because behind her mask of wry, sarcasm, there is a silent, inaudible cry out for help hence the theme of the movie: “What is true cannot be seen."
Starring Billy Ray Gallion who portrayed the role of "Randy Nations" on the ABC series "Lost" and Ray Mapes on the CBS TV show "Hawaii Five-0" (http://www.cbs.com/shows/hawaii_five_0/). Music courtesy of Kristin Hersh and CASH MUSIC: http://kristinhersh.cashmusic.org

The Money
All money being raised will be going directly into the production value elements of the film. I don't want live off any of this money-I want all of it to be seen on screen. We've already spent $7000 on the trailer (out-of-pocket, cash--not "in-kind") and will spend more.
The Shoot
It is our hope that production will re-commence in the Summer of 2013.
Other Ways You Can Help
Although money is what we are really looking for, funding being our priority, there may well be other ways in which you can support us. Please let me know if you think you might be able to help in a different way. In fact just by passing this on to other people and friends you know would help a great deal in spreading the word.

George Watsky
George Watsky is a writer and performer who believes in the equal power of the tear and the belly laugh. Born and raised in San Francisco and now based in Boston, Watsky aims to cross-pollinate the stage, screen and stereo with work that speaks to both the humor and frustrations of modern life.
Watsky was featured on Season 6 of Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry on HBO. He was the 2006 Youth Speaks Grand Slam Poetry Champion, 2006 Brave New Voices International Poetry Slam Champion, and performed in a record six consecutive Youth Speaks Grand Slam Finals. The last three of those audiences, all topping out at over 3,000, were the largest ever for poetry slams anywhere in the world. In 2009 Watsky was one of three poets who performed live on FOX at the NAACP Image Awards in honor of Russell Simmons' lifetime achievement award.
Watsky has made strides to bring his poetic sensibilities to the theater world. His one-man show So Many Levels has been presented in Boston, San Francisco, Vermont, and at the Hip Hop Theater Festival Critical Breaks series in New York City. He has also been featured at the San Francisco and Washington, DC arms of the Hip Hop Theater Festival. He played the title character and co-wrote a 2004 adaptation of Dante' Divine Comedy for the Living Word Festival and his stage play Harold's Fall or King Will is the recipient of the 2009 Rod Parker Playwriting Fellowship.
Taking it to the page and stereo, George's debut poetry collection and CD, Undisputed Backtalk Champion, was published by First Word Press in 2006. Edited by novelist Adam Mansbach, the book is currently in its fourth printing. As an emcee, Watsky has performed on both coasts with his band Invisible Inc. The trio's self titled album, a blend of jazz and hip hop, features R&B; sensation Passion. He served as a regular on-air personality for WERS Boston's hip hop show 889@Night for several years.
An honorary graduate of the Centre for Sustainability Leadership in Melbourne, Watsky has emerged as part of a vanguard of artists involved in the sustainability movement. The inaugural Speak Green winner for poetry on climate change, Watsky was twice invited by Robert Redford to perform in Sundance, Utah. He served as host of Green Mic in San Jose, California and of the culminating concert of Powershift 2007 in Washington DC, and performed at Rock the Debate in Oxford, Mississippi, prior to 2008's first Presidential debate. His work has brought him to the opening plenary of Green Cities 2008 in Sydney, Australia, and Greenbuild Chicago, where he took the stage immediately before President Bill Clinton.
Touring while finishing his college education on a condensed schedule, George has performed at conferences and universities in more than half the states in the US, and two in Australia, appearing at some of the nation's most notable venues, including the Apollo Theater, the Kennedy Center Concert Hall, the San Francisco Opera House and the Shrine Auditorium. He has shared billing with, among others, Beyonce, Stevie Wonder, Bonnie Raitt and Mohammed Ali.
