Miro Cerar’s daunting task to reform Slovenia after election win
The son of one of Slovenia's greatest ever sportsmen faces an Olympic task in turning around the small alpine nation's struggling economy after winning Sunday's general election. Miro Cerar only formed his small party of academics and entrepreneurs a few weeks ago, as corruption scandals tarnished mainstream parties. The 50-year-old lawyer is hostile to the big privatisation targets the EU says are necessary for a long-term economic fix, such as the country's main airport and a state telecoms firm. Now he says Slovenia will follow the EU's recommendations to beat the crisis, but by looking for the most appropriate means to comply. Cerar, who has begun talks with potential coalition partners, says his own privatisation programme will be in place this year. Reaction to the victory of his novice centre-left party has been sceptical. "The infernal mandate", ran one headline. Cerar has to deal with an explosion of public debt after billions were poured into Slovenia's banks to keep them afloat. "It remains to be seen whether Cerar's party will be able to do anything different... because the economy is simply always the same. It is a question of what can they do" said one Ljubljana resident. "It seems like a small step forward, but otherwise I do not expect any changes in the current policies. I think that in all areas the policies will continue as they were until now," said Uros Pirnat, an engineer from the capital. Slovenia was once a model eurozone country. But the crisis hit exports badly, and exposed a failure to reform and reckless behaviour by the banks. The ensuing turmoil has seen three governments in as many years, and the EU step in with a last-ditch reform package.- published: 14 Jul 2014

Who are we? Why are we here? Are we alone? The ethereal nature of the cosmos has brought inspiration to great thinkers throughout history -- Aristotle, Albert Einstein, Carl Sagan to name just a few. Through its profound beauty, the night sky has become a symbol of the possible. Yet, too often, we get so caught up in the daily grind of work, family and friends that we fail to take a moment and appreciate the vast expanse overhead. But not all of us. Across the globe tonight, many will pack a duffel bag. In it: a camera, tripod, flashlights, telescope, perhaps a blanket and maybe some snacks before setting off in search of the perfect location for a late-night photo shoot. Among them could be Slovenia-based stargazing enthusiast and photographer, Iztok Medja. "The stars remind me that we are small and not so important as we think," he says. "But it's not the gear that makes the photo. You have to just love this stuff. And go outside and practice and learn. One day you will get something." In Kathleen, Georgia, iReporter Greg Hogan tucks his kids in bed before grabbing his camera and stepping out into his front yard. A fairly new stargazer, he's only been snapping shots of space for the last six months but he's already besotted. "I bought a telescope for $25 at a yard sale and the first time I saw Saturn's rings, I was completely hooked," he says. "There's just so much out there that people don't realize that you can see without the equipment being expensive, if you just slow down a minute and take a peek." abc breaking news, bbc, bbc football, bbc iplayer, bbc news, bbc news america, bbc persian, bbc sport, bbc weather, bbc world news, breaking celebrity news, breaking election news, breaking late news, breaking local news, breaking music news, breaking news, breaking news alerts, breaking news canada, breaking news headlines, breaking news in atlanta, breaking news in nigeria, breaking news india, breaking news pensacola florida, breaking news plane crash, breaking news story, breaking sports news, business expensive news home media world, christian world news, cnn, cnn breaking news, cnn money, cnn news, cnn news breaking news, cnn news world, detroit breaking news, global news, headline, headline news, health care technology news, hot latest global news, internet technology news, las vegas breaking news, latest breaking news, latest celebrity news, latest information technology news, latest music news, latest news, latest news headlines, latest news update, latest sports news, live breaking news, local breaking news, local news today, msn breaking news, nbc breaking news, nbc world news, news of the world, news report us world, news today news, news updated daily, solar technology news, sports news today, technology news, the latest news, today news, us news and world, us news and world report, us news and world report magazine, us news and world report web site, us news world report, world news, world news daily, world news headlines- published: 12 Jul 2014

Slovenian Artist Creates Beautiful Lace-Like Easter Eggs
Slovenian Artist Creates Beautiful Lace-Like Easter Eggs
Slovenian artist creates beautiful lace-like Easter eggs by drilling thousands of holes in fragile eggs shells. Full Story: Slovenian artist Franc Grom creates intricate lace-like masterpieces out of Easter eggs as he uses precision tools to drill egg shells with thousands of tiny holes to create unique Easter eggs of fragile beauty. The 74-year-old retired engineer from Stara Vrhnika in Central Slovenia devised a technique in which he uses drills to make more than 2,000 holes in an average goose egg. Grom, who has been making intricately decorated eggs for about 20 years, says the biggest challenge in drilling eggs is avoiding cracks as the tiny holes are often drilled only millimeters apart. Nevertheless, his record-breaking egg had more than 24,000 holes in it, a testament to his precision and patience. "The most difficult part is taking care that the holes are drilled close to each other without breaking the shell. I have set my personal record some 3-4 years ago, with a little over 24,000 holes drilled into a single goose egg," Grom said. Grom says he is inspired by traditional Slovenian lace patterns in his designs, which he makes using precision tools normally used for engraving glass, with parts of it taken from dentists' equipment. "When I start working on an egg, I don't know exactly how it would look like in the end. I create the design along the way. I do a basic lace-like pattern, and then I fill it in. Sometimes it turns out beautiful." Grom also does not use any colours or chemicals on the eggs - the colour variation seen on some of the eggs is achieved purely by careful polishing. "A lot of time goes into preparing the eggs. After that, drilling two or three thousand holes is not that difficult. At five thousand, one has to be very careful and the pace of drilling gets slower. I would say that one good looking egg needs about ten days of work." Although Grom keeps a large collection of his favourite eggs at home, he also sells them as souvenirs and does orders for special occasions. His eggs, which are priced according to the complexity of the design and cost about 100 euros per 1,000 holes, all come with certificates of authenticity, and are known to have been shipped to customers all over the world. Suárez Staggers England With Finesse and Ferocity For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/BBCWORLDNEWS10 Luis Suárez's first goal on Thursday was a delicate touch of class, a deft header nodded in with precision and purpose and placement. Suárez's second goal, however — the one that was a death blow for England — was something closer to a savage blast. The combination was vintage Suárez, a pure attacker who perfectly embodies the Uruguayan notion of garra charrua — that is, a mixture of will, fight and an unyielding desire to win in whatever way is required. On a chilly night at Arena Corinthians, Suárez showed his deliberate jab and then, at just the right moment, his haymaker. The result was a 2-1 victory for Uruguay that left La Celeste rising and the Three Lions reeling. England is not mathematically eliminated after losing its opening two games but could be on Friday if Italy and Costa Rica play to a tie. Even if that does not happen, England will need outside help — in addition to a big win over Costa Rica — to advance. Our chances are unbelievably slim," England Manager Roy Hodgson said afterward. "We needed a result today, a draw or a victory, and we didn't get it." They did not, even after Wayne Rooney, the often criticized English forward, finally scored his first World Cup goal in his 10th career game on the sport's biggest stage. That goal, which came in the 75th minute after a thrilling run and cross from Glen Johnson, seemed as if it ought to bring relief: for Rooney, who is 28 but surely feels much older after more than a decade of scrutiny from England fans; for Hodgson, whose player selection had come under fire and whose job status will most likely be up in the air if his team fails to advance; and for the fans, many of whom traveled to Brazil and who were hoping, finally, for more than just another underachievement. Yet there was no relief. Instead, the reprieve lasted just nine minutes with Suárez, again, pricking the balloon. In the first half, Suárez ruined 45 minutes of decent English possession, slipping in behind the defense and taking an inch-perfect cross from Edinson Cavani squarely on his forehead.Suárez did not hesitate once he made contact — he turned away before the ball was even beyond goalkeeper Joe Hart, firing two shots from his finger guns and sprinting toward the corner flag in jubilation. That celebration, though, was nothing compared with the one that came later. Rooney and his teammates were abuzz after England's goal, perhaps even entertaining thoughts of snagging a late winner. Rather, it was Suárez again, taking advantage of an errant header from his Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard and sprinting in on goal. He took one touch to steady himself and then unleashed a vicious shot that whistled past Hart and stretched the back of the net. This time, Suárez ran toward the side of the field and collapsed, face first, in the grass as his giddy teammates piled on top of him. Slovenia, Portugal and Spain "have a long way to go"
Slovenia, Portugal and Spain "have a long way to go"
Things may be looking up for the eurozone; the bloc is out of its longest ever recession with Germany and France, the region's largest economies, returning to growth. But as TradingFloor.com blogger Juhani Huopainen explains, there are other countries which still have a long way to go, in particular Slovenia, Portugal and Spain.Slovenia saw its economy shrink by 0.3 percent in August, and has been "unofficially pressured by the European Union to apply for a bailout". Juhani says the country's banking system has been hit by "big losses". Its Government now has to prepare a credible reform program in order to avoid having to ask for help.Secondly, Portugal is a concern for the Finnish writer. Its current bailout ends mid-2014 but according to Juhani, "it is not realistic that the country will be able to return to financial market by then". This means there is an "immediate need for some sort of financing" to help boost the country. Finally, Juhani thinks it's "surprising" that markets are viewing Spain as a smaller risk than Italy, even though its current unemployment level is at an alarming 26 percent and despite the fact its banking system is "completely unsolved."Juhani thinks this means markets are now starting to focus on growth, instead of balance sheet situations, when it comes to measuring risks.Read more about Juhani's predictions here:http://www.tradingfloor.com/traders/juhani-huopainen (http://www.tradingfloor.com/traders/juhani-huopainen)- published: 26 Sep 2013
