The Sahitya Akademi (साहित्य अकादमी), India's National Academy of Letters, is an organisation dedicated to the promotion of literature in the languages of India. Founded on 12 March 1954, it is supported by, though independent of, the Indian government and situated at Rabindra Bhavan near Mandi House area.
The Sahitya Akademi organises national and regional workshops and seminars; provides research and travel grants to authors; publishes books and journals, including the Encyclopaedia of Indian Literature; and presents the annual Sahitya Akademi Award of Rs. 100,000 (approx. USD 2,200) in each of the 24 languages it supports, as well as the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship for lifetime achievement. The Sahitya Akademi Library is one of the largest multi-lingual libraries in India, with a rich collection of books on literature and allied subjects. It also publishes two bimonthly literary journals -- Indian Literature in English and Samkaleen Bharatiya Sahitya in Hindi.
Qurrat-ul-Ain Haider (Urdu: قرۃ العین حیدر; January 20, 1928 – August 21, 2007) was an influential Urdu novelist and short story writer, an academic, and a journalist. One of the most outstanding literary names in Urdu literature, she is most known for her magnum opus, Aag Ka Darya (River of Fire), a novel first published in Urdu in 1959, from Lahore, Pakistan, that stretches from the 4th century BC to post partition of India. Popularly known as "Ainee Apa" among her friends and admirers, she was the daughter of writer and pioneers of Urdu short story writing Sajjad Haidar Yildarim (1880–1943). Her mother, Nazar Zahra, who wrote at first as Bint-i-Nazrul Baqar and later as Nazar Sajjad Hyder (1894–1967), was also a novelist and protegee of Muhammadi Begam and her husband Syed Mumtaz Ali, who published her first novel.
She received the 1967 Sahitya Akademi Award in Urdu for Patjhar Ki Awaz (Short stories), 1989 Jnanpith Award for Akhire Shab Ke Humsafar, and the highest award of the Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters, the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 1994. She also received the Padma Bhushan from the Government of India in 2005.
Narayan Debnath (Bengali: নারায়ণ দেবনাথ) is the creator of popular Bengali comics including ‘HANDA-BHONDA’ (in Shuktara from 1962), ‘BATUL THE GREAT’(in Shuktara from 1965) and ‘NONTE-PHONTE’(in Kishore Bharati from 1969). His other creations include detective ‘Koushik Roy’ (in Shuktara from 1976), ‘Bahadur Beral’ (in Shuktara from 1983), ‘Danpite Khadu aar tar chemical dadu’ (from 1983 in Chotoder Ashore) etc. Having contributed to the early development of Bangla comics and its growth in a career spanning more than fifty years, he is still read in West Bengal, India and Bangladesh. Apart from comic books and strips, Narayan Debnath is also an artist who has illustrated several children's novels. Many of his comics are serialized in popular children’s magazines published from Kolkata including Shuktara and Kishor Bharati
In 2011 a large size (500 page) RESEARCH oriented Comics book on his lifetime art work named "NARAYAN DEBNATH COMICS-SAMAGRA" (edited and compiled by Santanu ghosh) was published which includes all his comics characters together for last 50 years. In April 2012 first English translated BANTUL THE GREAT book was published by Lalmati publication.
Mahesh Dattani (7 August 1958) is an Indian director, actor and writer. He wrote plays like Final Solutions, Dance Like a Man,Bravely Fought the Queen,On a Muggy Night in Mumbai,Tara and 30 days in September
He is the first playwright in English to be awarded the Sahitya Akademi award His plays has been directed by eminent directors like Arvind Gaur, Alyque Padamsee and Lillete Dubey.
Mahesh Dattani was born in Bangalore. He went to Baldwin Boys High School and then went on to join St. Joseph's College, Bangalore. Mahesh is a graduate in History, Economics and Political Science. He is a Post Graduate in Marketing and Advertising Management.
Mahesh Dattani, prior to his stint with the world of theater, used to work as a copywriter in an advertising firm. In 1986, he wrote his first full-length play, Where There’s a Will, and from 1995, he has been working full-time in theatre.He has also worked with his father in the family business.
He first shot into news with his debut film Mango Souffle. He also made movie Morning Raaga.
Professor Rajendra Mishra(1919–1979) was an education pioneer and one of the founders of the first Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Kharagpur, in 1951. He helped establish the Institute’s infrastructure, pioneered the engineering disciplines of Mechanical, Production, and Industrial Engineering, and launched the study of Management Science in India. His contribution was unprecedented when he forged a relationship between industry and academia through collaborative programmes. He brought his rich industrial experience to the educational system of IIT and embraced the best engineering and management practices from the US and Europe to build the foundation for a world-class engineering university over a time span of 27 years in India.
Late Professor Rajendra Mishra was a towering personality in the field of Industrial Engineering and Management in India. He is reputed to be the first Management teacher in the country. He established the Department of Management Studies in 1954 in IIT Kharagpur. Along with such luminaries as Sir Jahangir Ghandhy, Former President of India Shri V. V. Giri, Former Minister of Higher Education Dr. Triguna Sen, he developed one of the first Executive Development Programmes in India.
