Michael John Cleote Crawford Rutherford (born 2 October 1950 in Guildford, Surrey) is an English musician. He is a founding member of Genesis, initially as a bassist and backup vocalist. Rutherford often played rhythm guitar and 12-string guitar for the band in the early years. Following the departure of Steve Hackett from Genesis in 1977, he assumed the role of lead guitarist on the band's studio albums, beginning with And Then There Were Three in 1978. He is one of only two constant members in Genesis (the other is keyboardist Tony Banks). Rutherford wrote the lyrics to many Genesis songs during their career, including some of the band's biggest international hits, such as "Follow You, Follow Me", "Turn It On Again", "Land of Confusion" and "Throwing It All Away". He also formed Mike + The Mechanics in 1985. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010.
Rutherford received his first guitar at the age of eight, and played in his first band, the Chesters (so named because they lived near Chester) at the age of nine. His father, Crawford Rutherford, was a Royal Navy Captain who became a manager in industry upon his retirement from the service. Mike boarded at the Leas Preparatory School in Hoylake and moved at the age of 13 to Charterhouse School, where he joined the Anon and formed a songwriting partnership with fellow guitarist Anthony Phillips. At age 15, the two of them founded Genesis with Tony Banks and Peter Gabriel. Rutherford hated his time in public school however, and was later expelled from Charterhouse for what he describes as a number of instances of minor misconduct.
Philip David Charles "Phil" Collins, LVO (born 30 January 1951) is an English singer-songwriter, drummer, pianist and actor best known as a drummer and vocalist for British progressive rock group Genesis and as a solo artist.
Collins sang the lead vocals on several chart hits in the United Kingdom and the United States between 1975 and 2010, either as a solo artist or with Genesis. His singles, sometimes dealing with lost love, ranged from the drum-heavy "In the Air Tonight", dance pop of "Sussudio", piano-driven "Against All Odds", to the political statements of "Another Day in Paradise".
Collins's professional music career began as a drummer, originally in a band called The Real Thing with Andrea Bertorelli, who later became his first wife. Collins played drums and shared lead vocals (with Brian Chatton) in Flaming Youth which recorded one album, (Ark II). In 1970, he took over drums for Genesis, which had already recorded two albums. In Genesis, Collins originally supplied backing vocals for front man Peter Gabriel, singing lead on only two songs: "For Absent Friends" from 1971's Nursery Cryme album and "More Fool Me" from Selling England by the Pound, which was released in 1973. Following Gabriel's departure in 1975, Collins became the group's lead singer.
Mike + The Mechanics are an English rock/pop supergroup formed in 1985 as a side project of Mike Rutherford, one of the founding members of the band Genesis. The band is known for their hit singles "Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground)", "All I Need Is a Miracle", "Word of Mouth", "Over My Shoulder", and "The Living Years".
Initially, the band included Rutherford, vocalists Paul Carrack and Paul Young, keyboardist Adrian Lee and drummer Peter Van Hooke. Carrack was generally assigned to ballads and more pop-oriented numbers, while Young handled the band's heavier work. Following Young's death Paul Carrack became the band's sole lead vocalist until 2004 when the band went on hiatus. The band identity was revived in 2010 with a completely new set of Mechanics working with Rutherford, including new vocalists Andrew Roachford and Tim Howar.
During hiatuses from Genesis, Mike Rutherford had been pursuing a solo career, releasing Smallcreep's Day in 1980 and Acting Very Strange in 1982. However, he found the process of recording a solo album excessively difficult, and the results artistically unsatisfying. He recalled, "I had a revelation, too, in this time period... that I'm not complete on my own. ...I'm much more creative and inspired when there are other people around me and I'm bouncing ideas off." However, he still felt that working only with Genesis would leave him unfulfilled, and to satisfy both his desire to create music outside the format of Genesis and his desire to collaborate with other musicians, he set about forming his own band.
George Roger Waters (born 6 September 1943) is an English musician, singer-songwriter and composer. He was a founder member of the progressive rock band Pink Floyd, serving as bassist and co-lead vocalist. Following the departure of bandmate Syd Barrett in 1968, Waters became the band's lyricist, principal songwriter and conceptual leader. The band subsequently achieved worldwide success in the 1970s with the concept albums The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall. Although Waters' primary instrument in Pink Floyd was the bass guitar, he also experimented with synthesisers and tape loops and played rhythm guitars in recordings and in concerts. Amid creative differences within the group, Waters left Pink Floyd in 1985 and began a legal battle with the remaining members over their future use of the group's name and material. The dispute was settled out of court in 1987, and nearly eighteen years passed before he performed with Pink Floyd again. It is estimated that as of 2010, the group have sold over 200 million albums worldwide, including 74.5 million units sold in the United States.
Paul Carrack (born 22 April 1951) is an English singer, songwriter and musician. Carrack has been a member of several bands including Ace, Squeeze, Mike + The Mechanics, and Roxy Music, been a session and touring musician for several others including Nick Lowe, and has enjoyed success as a solo artist as well. His distinctive voice appears on some of his affiliated bands' best-known hits. He was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.
Carrack's recording career began with the jazz rock band Warm Dust, who released three albums of original material between 1970 and 1972. Carrack was the keyboard player for the band, occasionally playing other instruments, with Les Walker as the lead vocalist.
After Warm Dust broke up, Carrack and Warm Dust bassist Tex Comer helped to found the pub rock band Ace. Carrack both wrote and was vocalist on "How Long?", Ace's debut single – a hit in both the UK and US in 1975. However, no further Ace recordings enjoyed that same level of popularity.
In 1977 Ace disbanded, and Carrack began working as a backing musician for Frankie Miller. Subsequently, he was a member of Roxy Music, playing keyboards on their 1979 reunion album Manifesto. Carrack would also play on the next two Roxy Music albums, but as a session musician, not a band member.
It's been so many years since I saw your face,
But now I'm home again back in my old place
And though you're not quite sure you think you see me by the door
I'll be there.
When the winter comes knocking on the door
And you've the firelight dancing on the floor
In the dead of night when every star is burning bright
I'll be there
Time and time again
I am always there to see you through the night
Time and time again
Rest your tired head and it will be alright
and after all is said, is said and done
Oh God you'll never know
Just how lonely life can be for me.
So let me tell you now what it's like to be
The one whose memories are scattered on the sea
When the wind goes down you'll see them lying all around.
On a cloudy day, high up in the sky
There's a lonely bird who's sailing round and round
Looking for a place to land down on the ground, for a while
Over and over again
Please give your love to me
Throw it in the wind and I'll be there.
Deep within the darkness I'm the shadow next to yours
I'll be there.
Time and time again
I am always there to see you through the night
Time and time again
Rest your tired head and it will be alright
And after all is said, is said and done
Please give your love to me
Throw it in the wind and I'll be there.
Smallcreep had worked for over forty years in the factory. Till one day, tired of drilling holes in the same piece of steel and amazed at his fellow workers' lack of interest as to what they were making, he decided to find out himself.
The plant was so large that he roamed for days glimpsing other worlds that were completely different to his; and not one knew of another's existence. At last he came to the end of the line and there before him lay the gleaming new machine.
Satisfied by this sight and with the knowledge that in all the places he had been nothing was really changed, Smallcreep returned home.
Between The Tick And The Tock
It's so very dark in here
There's water on the wall
I can see no lights and what's that sound
That droning far above the smoke
And everywhere I look their eyes are watching me.
Hello my friend
The day is long and I am very hot
This metal world
The lower half of every face is lit
Everytime I look the clock is calling me
On the tick and the tock.
I've got my love to get me there
But I've more pain that I can bare
There is a world to find and share
Oh Saturday - Oh Saturday
And I can see a dying race, who live their lives
On the tick and the tock, in between.
Working In Line
I'm hopelessly waiting in line
For what I don't know I don't mind
There's never a day that goes by
Without blood on my hands in my hair.
I'm hopelessly working in line
On what I don't care I don't mind
There's nothing that I would give
To see what comes out at the end.
Cats And Rats (In This Neighbourhood)
Say I'm going, yes I am going in another day,
Coz if I do go home I've nothing left to say.
I'm a man who clocked on but out of my life.
When the lights go out tonight I'll make my move.
Too many years and all those tears have gone so deep inside me.
Oh No!
Along the edge, above the metal dreamlike streamlike world.
Way up above looking down up row after row of factory machines.
There's no time like the present.
Singing a song I brought along to keep me company.
Aching back, my breath coming fast my feet getting lighter, I
I feel kind of dizzy
Running up, I'm running down.
I am nearly there, I am, I'm nearly there.
The light in the distance is getting so much brighter.
I'm a no-man in a no-man's land.
The metal girders that stand all around have now gone.
The sky through the skylight's a different shade of blue.
Cats and rats in this neighbourhood,
Cats and rats in this neighbourhood.
Look different to me.
Let it be a better day - for you my love.
Let it be a better day - for me my love.
At The End Of The Day
The day is nearly ended hurry home to your bed
My nights are oh so lonely come and lay down your head
The eyes of all our children growing heavy with sleep
And with one final flicker into a world full of dreams.
Oh I need you now through the lonely nights
And when the morning comes upon us
I'll be holding you so close to me.
The grass is never greener either side of the wall
If I am here or somewhere many miles away
For I have come to realize nothing changes at all.
Oh I need you now through the lonely nights
And when the morning comes upon us
I'll be holding you so close to me.
There never was a moment I wasn't sure
I would be someone who roamed the world
And when the time was ready and so was I
get out of here onto the streets
Who'll make everything better, who'll make everything better.
The life that I was living, the great outdoors
Stars up above me everynight, as I lay down my head
Who'll make everything better, who'll make everything better.
Get out of bed I hear them singing all along the way
You're where you want to be out on the open road again
Ain't that peculiar, you're on you're own again
You're on your own, on your own, I guess you always were.
One day you come to realise you're getting old
No one to share the lonely days, to be together
Who'll make everything better, who'll make everything better.
Get out of bed I hear them singing all along the way
Too late to change it all, the gypsy in your blood has gone
Ain't that peculiar, you're on your own again
You're on your own, on your own, until the very end.
Maxine, well have you been?
Maxine, long time no see
Maxine, such a surprise
Maxine, just look out tonight
I hear you been livin' in Paris
Under an assumed fame
They say that you've been married
If not in passion at least in name
Damn you, girl, it still hurts me
No man was ever safe, yeah
Taming the shrew comes easy
If any man knew your taste, Maxine
Maxine, how times have changed
Maxine, well nothing's the same
Maxine, everything's gone
Maxine, your home ain't your own
You suit those European clothes
In a foreign sort of way
You still wear that air of distinction
In your fatefully stunning way
Damn you, girl, it still hurts me
And the years just made it worse
In fact our love is divided
Between the blessed and the cursed, Maxine
Maxine, don't bring back the past
Maxine, life is too fast
Maxine, oh everything's changed
Maxine, nothing's the same
Maxine, Maxine
I do remember, do you remember
I still remember, do you remember
I still remember, do you still -
Maxine...
I suppose you think I'm crazy
I suppose you think I'm mad
You will never understand
Why I'm alone, oh I'm alone, but I
Such a lot of information
Such a lot of useless talk
And there is no way to avoid it
So I'm alone, oh I'm alone, but I
I don't think I wanna know...
I don't think I wanna know
And I don't think I wanna know
Ask all the questions
Answer all the lies
Many men have told me
That you wouldn't be surprised
I'm so alone, I'm so alone, but I
I don't think I wanna know...
I don't think I wanna know
I don't need this information
Information...
But I think I'll find an answer
If you'll just give me the chance
There are people in the world today
Who won't even question that
They don't need this information
And now I'm asking you, the only way I know
And you are telling me you cannot keep control
If you think of me
If you think of me the way I am
If you think of me and what I mean
If you think of me the way I ask you now
I don't think I wanna know...
I don't wanna be another fool...
How, how can I
How can I be back here again
It was just the other day.
That I, I said I
I said I would be moving on
Seems to me I'm going round and round
It's the only way I know.
Every road that I take is the same
Everyway I go, everyday I go
Leading me back the way I've just come
Every road that I take is the same
Don't be sorry please, don't you worry please
I will be back again very soon.
Then, when I know
I know that I have stayed too long
And there's nothing left for me to say
So I'll be on my way
Every road that I take is the same
Everyway I go, everyday I go
Leading me back the way I've just come
Every road that I take is the same
Don't be sorry please, don't you worry please,
I will be back again very soon.
Follow me now, wherever I go
Follow me now.
Couldn't get arrested, couldn't get arrested
You keep on investing everything you had
Couldn't get arrested, couldn't get arrested
They are all protesting, you're luckier than the rest
You were the last one, to find out what you want
While all your friends went, chasing their careers
They called you crazy and said you'd never make it
They all moved out to their suburbia that year
Life is so good, no one else could see it
It never stopped you from hawkin' it around
You knew you had it, long before they found it
Everywhere the doors slammed, everybody turned you down (but)
Couldn't get arrested, couldn't get arrested
You keep on investing everything you had
Couldn't get arrested, couldn't get arrested
They are all protesting, it's only luck at best
Now fame has hit you, old friends keep on calling
And all the slamming doors are taken off the hinge
They all remember the encouragement they gave you
You have to turn each time and try to hide a grin
It's good to be there, they said you'd never make it
That satisfaction's feeling good to know
You knew you had it, long before they found it
Everywhere the doors slammed, everybody turned you down (but)
Couldn't get arrested, couldn't get arrested
You keep on investing everything you had
Couldn't get arrested, couldn't get arrested
They are all protesting, you're luckier than the rest
Couldn't get arrested, couldn't get arrested
Couldn't get arrested
You're luckier than the rest
Couldn't get arrested, couldn't get arrested
You keep on investing everything you had
Couldn't get arrested, couldn't get arrested
Couldn't get arrested
You're luckier than the rest
Couldn't get arrested, couldn't get arrested
You keep on investing everything you had
Couldn't get arrested, couldn't get arrested
Couldn't get arrested
You're luckier than the rest
Couldn't get arrested, couldn't get arrested
You keep on investing
You're luckier than the rest
Couldn't get arrested, couldn't get arrested
Get the money and run
Now's not the time to hang around
Overnight job it's an overnight job
Anymore for anymore
Think it over, you've always got to be
Just one more step ahead
Everyone said that it couldn't be done
And I know that's why you're here tonight
You've got everything that you need for the job
I hope that it all works out right.
Out on the streets at the dead of night
There's nobody else around
Overnight job it's an overnight job
Anymore for anymore
Think it over, you've always got to be
Just one more step ahead
Coz everyone said that it couldn't be done
And I know that's why you're here tonight
Over your shoulder the day's getting bolder
The shadows are fading away.
Because everyone's got it inside, just a little bit somewhere
Overnight job it's an overnight job
Think it over, you've always got to be
Just one more step ahead
Everyone said that it couldn't be done
And I know that's why you are here tonight
Over your shoulder the day's getting bolder
The shadows are fading away.
And I feel like the night is closing - I know it is
Do you feel it burning in my blood
Burning in my blood like it's setting me fire.
And I feel like a cloud is closing in - I know it is
As I slip into a hazy crazy world - I know I am
Sooner or later moonshine in my brain
Turning me around till there's madness in the air.
Turning water into wine, till there's nothing left to burn
Courage deserted me tonight.
And in the moments that I have when peace is all around
I can see clearly now, and what I see
There's your world and there's mine
There's so little in between
But listen my love
We will never know which one of us has got it right.
Coz baby the things I do are hurting everyone
I know they are. I've got to try to find the door
Sooner or later it will turn me inside out
Begone all those who would torment me
I've an answer for you now.
And I'm glad it's not late to give it up - I know it's not
All I need's a year or two to rearrange - to rearrange
I can feel it burning in my blood
Turning me around till there's madness in the air.
Turning water into wine, till there's nothing left to burn
Courage deserted me tonight.
And in the moments that I have when peace is all around
I can see clearly now, and what I see
There's your world and there's mine
There's so little in between
But listen my love
We will never know which one of us has got it right.
Turning water into wine, till there's nothing left to burn
Courage deserted me tonight.
Turning water into wine, till there's nothing left to burn
Courage deserted me tonight.
They think they know me
But they couldn't be more wrong
They're not hearing what I'm singing
When I sing my song
They say I'm aimless
They don't know I've got a plan
Mystified by me
They don't understand
They tried out pocket-book psychology
They'd better think again
When they try sussing me
Who is fooling who
Who is fooling, who is fooling
Who is fooling, who is fooling who
They think they know me
But they couldn't be more wrong
They're not listening what I'm singing
When I'm singing out this song
Well they think they know me
But they haven't got a clue
I'm the one who knows
Who is fooling who
They think I'm an open book
But they can't see
They're in the darkroom
When it comes to reading me
Who is fooling who
Who is fooling, who is fooling
Who is fooling, who is fooling who
You think you're with me
But you couldn't be more wrong
They're not following me closely
But they only trail along
Who do you think is fooling who
It could be me who's fooling you, hey hey
Who's been fooling who
Who's been fooling who
I won't say you're lacking
But you just have no idea
You're not hearing what I'm singing
Though I'm singing loud and clear
You'll never make it
As a player in my band
We can't have that
Oh no, who is fooling who
You think I'm no good
But there's nothing I can do
Think again
I know who is fooling who
I am the one who knows
Who is fooling who, oh
Think once again, I know
Who is fooling who, oh
Who is fooling who
I am the one who knows
Who is fooling who, oh
Think once again, I know
Who is fooling who, oh
When the day is weary
All the things that we have said
Take on a different meaning
Now the world has gone to bed
I need to feel you near me
Put your arms around me now
And we will stay together
Watch the world go by somehow
It's a dream I thought we might have had
But it's too late, I'm losing you
Hideaway, till the night comes back to me
Hideaway, until the sun comes up again
I will hideaway, till your love comes back to me
Hideaway, until somebody sets me free
You never, oh never know
When the streets are empty
Not a soul is to be found
And the wind around us
Covers every other sound
As you turn the corner
See my light up on the hill
All I'll ever ask you
Is you'll stay with me until
It's a dream I thought we might have had
But it's too late, I'm losing you
Hideaway, till the night comes back to me
Hideaway, until the sun comes back to me
Hideaway, till your love comes back to me
Hideaway, until somebody sets me free
You never, oh never know
Until darling, nothing left to show
Hideaway, till the night comes back to me
Hideaway, until the sun comes up again
Until somebody, hideaway
And your love comes back, comes back to me
Hideaway, until somebody sets me free
Until somebody, yeah, oh never know
'Til darling...
Oh, I think I know the story
I've been hiding it for so long
Are you running away?
Cos I'm in love with you
There's nothing you can do
I'm in love with you
Why when we get halfway there
Why when we get halfway started
Why when we get halfway there
Do I feel it's so half-hearted?
(Make up your mind) making up your mind
(Better decide) you better decide this time
How can you call this loving?
You know it's all or nothing
I'm not afraid to tell the truth
I've been hiding it for so long
Oh, I think you already know
That I'm in love with you, with you
Why when we get halfway there
Why when we get halfway started
Why when we get halfway there
Do I feel it's so half-hearted?
(Make up your mind) making up your mind
(Better decide) you better decide this time
How can you call this loving?
You know it's all or nothing
Why when we get halfway there
Why when we get halfway started
Why when we get halfway there
Do I feel it's so half-hearted?
(Give me a sign) why don't you give me?
(Give me a line) why don't you believe me?
How can you call this loving?
You know it's all or nothing
Why when we get halfway there
Why when we get halfway there
(Make up your mind) making up your mind
(Better decide) you better decide this time
How can you call this loving?
You know it's all or nothing
(Make up your mind) why did you do it?
(Better decide) why can't you believe it?
How can you call this loving?
You know it's all or nothing...
If I step into the light
And hold it in my hand
Nothing left to see,
Nothing left for me, anyway
I feel the world is slipping
Out of reach (I'm all alone)
It's a memory
It's a memory that used to be
In a little while
I know it'll be too late
Somebody help me, please
Cos you're acting very strange
You're acting very strange
You're acting very strange
You're acting very strange
Oh, you never come here any more
You never even call
To see if I'm alright
Get me through the night
Like you used to do
In a little while
I know it'll be too late
Now I'm certain
That you're acting very strange
You're acting very strange
You're acting very strange
You're acting very strange
Another lonely day without you, oh
I'm acting very strange without you, oh
Another lonely day without you, oh
I'm acting very strange without you, oh
Oh, the place is getting very hot
I'm afraid to stay
Something's going on
Something's very wrong with you and me
If I reach out to touch your face
There's nothing there to touch
It's a memory
It's a memory of you and me
In a little while
I know it'll be too late
Now I'm certain
That you're acting very strange
You're acting very strange
You're acting very strange
You're acting very strange
I'm acting very strange without you, oh
Another lonely day without you, oh
I'm acting very strange without you, oh
Another lonely day without you, oh
You're acting very strange...
I'm acting very strange without you, oh...
There's a light in every window
And it's shining on your door
It's put there to remind you
Of what you must answer for
Have you never had this feeling
There's nothin' you must hide
No day to remember
No day to recall
Every day is just another day
Every way is just another way
So try to remember
Please try to recall
Why don't you believe me, oh
Why don't you believe me, oh
And in a moment's hesitation
Your defences are down
And your secret is out, it is out
Nightmares keep coming
Your dreams get confused
As you try to remember
The way that you were used
But you'll have forgotten
You can't recall
The way that it happened
And the things that you saw
Every face is just another face
Every place is just another place
That haunts you forever,
The day you can't hide
Why don't you believe me, oh
Why don't you believe me, oh
And in a moment's hesitation
Your defences are down
And your secret is out, is out
Someone points a finger
Someone knows the truth
'Bout the day you've been hiding
The day you were used
But the nightmares keep coming
Your dreams get confused
As you try to remember
As you try to recall
But you know in your heart
Someone will find
That day you remember
That day you can't hide
That day you remember
That day you can't hide
