Tommy Steele OBE (born Thomas William Hicks, 17 December 1936, Bermondsey, London), is an English entertainer. Steele is widely regarded as Britain's first teen idol and rock and roll star.
Before landing a singing career, Steele tried his hand at a number of odd jobs and had a brief spell as a merchant seaman. Like many singers of his era he never did national service, having failed the medical examination because, at eighteen years old, he was diagnosed as suffering with cardiomyopathy. However, according to his autobiography, Bermondsey Boy: Memories of a Forgotten World, he failed the medical because he had flat feet. While on leave or during dock strikes, he played guitar and banjo and sang in The 2i's Coffee Bar and the Cat's Whisker where hand-jiving was devised, two coffee houses in Soho, both as a solo performer and with Wally Whyton's Vipers Skiffle Group. When a ship Steele was serving on docked in Norfolk, Virginia, he heard Buddy Holly and fell in love with rock and roll, turning his back on the British skiffle craze. He was discovered by freelance photographer John Kennedy, who believed Steele could be Britain's answer to Elvis Presley. Later co-manager Larry Parnes was incorrectly credited with creating the stage name 'Tommy Steele.' It was Steele who adapted the surname of his Scandinavian paternal grandfather, Thomas Stil-Hicks (pronounced Steel-Hicks), adding another E to the spelling.[citation needed]
Aki Olavi Kaurismäki (Finnish pronunciation: [ˈɑki ˈkɑurismæki] ( listen); born 4 April 1957, Orimattila, Finland) is a Finnish screenwriter and film director.
After studying Media Studies at the University of Tampere, Aki Kaurismäki started his career as a co-director in the films of his elder brother Mika Kaurismäki. His debut as an independent director was Crime and Punishment (1983), Dostoyevsky's famous crime story set in modern-day Helsinki. He gained worldwide notice with his movie Leningrad Cowboys Go America.
His style has been influenced by the French directors Jean-Pierre Melville and Robert Bresson, as he relies on low-key acting and simple cinematic storytelling to get his message(s) across. Critics have also seen an influence from Rainer Werner Fassbinder but Kaurismäki - a keen film buff himself - has said that he somehow never got around to seeing any Fassbinder movies until quite recently. His movies have a unique downplayed humorous side that can also be seen in the films of Jim Jarmusch, who has a cameo in Kaurismäki's film Leningrad Cowboys Go America. Jarmusch also used frequent Kaurismäki actors in his film Night on Earth, a part of which takes place in Helsinki, Finland.
Jean-Marie "JC" Carroll is an English composer, songwriter and musician of French-Irish extraction.
After playing in various school bands, JC's first taste of serious music was a 1974 chance meeting in the Three Mariners in Bagshot, Surrey, with pub rock pioneer and 1970s icon Graham Parker. Together they subsequently recorded a two-track 1/4-inch tape in JC's bedroom later to become known in Parker mythology as "The Akai Tapes". Parker went on to international acclaim, whilst JC settled into life as a band clerk living in a bedsit in Kilburn writing songs on a battered acoustic guitar about living in a bedsit in Kilburn writing songs.
A chance meeting on a train with Nicky Ritz (née Lightowlers) a Liverpool University graduate, sometimes insurance salesman, singer, beat poet bon vivant with a fantastic talent for self-promotion led in 1977 to him being asked to join Ritz's seminal band The Members. Carroll promptly renamed Ritz Tesco, and The Members were on their way.
The group's first single "Solitary Confinement" (a JC co-write with Nicky Tesco) was released on the then achingly fashionable Stiff Records. The original 7-inch pressing of this record is highly collectible. In the spring of 1979 The Members released their UK anthem "The Sound Of The Suburbs" (another JC co-write). This record went on to sell 250,000 copies in months. The track has subsequently been on hundreds of punk compilations and is what The Members are most known for. The subsequent album At The Chelsea Nightclub... gained critical approval and has been listed in Record Collector as one of the top 20 punk albums ever made.
Marko Tapani "Marco" Hietala (born January 14, 1966 in Tervo, Finland) is a heavy metal vocalist and bassist. Internationally, he is most known as the current bassist, male vocalist and secondary composer to Tuomas Holopainen, of the symphonic metal band Nightwish. He is also the vocalist and bassist as well as composer and lyricist for the heavy metal band Tarot.
Marco Hietala was born January 14, 1966, and is the youngest child of the Hietala family. Hietala lived in Tervo until the age of 15, after which he moved to Kuopio to study classical guitar, vocals and musical theory in high school. In 1984, he and his brother, Zachary Hietala, formed heavy metal band Tarot under the name Purgatory. In 1986, Tarot received a deal for their first album and went on tour.
Hietala joined Nightwish for their 2002 album Century Child, following the departure of previous bassist Sami Vänskä. He was a prominent guest musician in Delain, a project involving many members of the gothic and symphonic metal community. He also participated in the recording of Invitation, by Altaria, providing backing vocals. Hietala has also been part of the bands Sinergy, Impaled Nazarene and Northern Kings.
