Duke Energy Acquires Solar Project in Tucson

Within the University of Arizona’s (US) Science and Technology Park in an area dedicated to solar energy, Duke Energy Renewables, a commercial business unit of Duke Energy, acquires a solar power project in Tucson.

It’s the 6-megawatt Gato Montes Solar Power Project purchased from AstroSol Inc. consisting of 48,000 thin-film photovoltaic panels. The project’s commercial operation will begin in the next week.

The electricity generated by panels will be bought by Tucson Electric Power Co. under a 20-year agreement.
In two years, the Gato Montes project is the Duke Energy Renewables’ fifth solar project in Arizona. With all projects, the company will be able to produce 37 megawatts of solar energy in Tucson by the end of the year.

Other Duke’s projects are in Mohave, Pima and Yavapai. Since 2007, the company has invested more than $2.5 billion to develop its commercial wind and solar business.
