From BBC World News: Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's AKP has won the country's municipal elections, taking about 45% of the votes. Election Day in Turkey: Ballots, Watchdogs, and Fraud
Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News After many turbulent weeks of campaigning amid protests, charges of corruption, and online censorship, election day finally arrived in Turkey. People in Istanbul had been talking about it like the season finale of some exhaustive, all-encompassing soap opera. VICE News accompanied a citizen watchdog group called Vote & Beyond as it monitored the elections. This helped us access three polling stations around the city, as well as one of the city's main election centers. What we found was a largely analog election process vulnerable to all kinds of voter fraud. A positive effect of the protests, however, is that they have inspired organizations like Vote & Beyond to combat the cheating with a new level of diligence. Eight dead as Turkey goes to the polls in municipal elections
Turkey's municipal elections have been marred by violence. Security officials said eight people have died as fights broke out between rival candidates in two villages near the southeastern border with Syria. The election is being viewed as a crisis referendum, say analysts on Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's 10-year-rule. He was not standing but criss-crossed the country in the build up to Sunday's vote campaigning for his Justice and Development Party - the AKP. Tensions had risen in ad... Turkey presidential elections: 53 million people eligible to vote
"Who will be the first president of Turkey elected by popular vote? Voters have been arriving at polling stations to decide who that will be," asked Euronews' correspondent in Turkey, Bora Bayraktar. More than 165,000 polling stations are open on Sunday. Around 53 million people are eligible to vote in the election to decide who will be president for the next five years. These elections are the first time that Turkish expatriates have been able to cast their ballots in a Turkish election. … READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2014/08/10/turkey-presidential-elections-53-million-people-eligible-to-vote- What is in the news today? Turkey: local elections become test of support for Erdogan - #Focus
This morning we head to Turkey, where municipal elections will also be held on Sunday. While the Islamo-conservatives, who have been in power for 12 years, have a good chance of winning, this election will nevertheless serve as a litmus test for Prime Minister Erdogan, who has been tainted by a corruption scandal, and whose authoritarian attitude led to protests in the streets. Our correspondents provide an insight into the Erdogan machine, to try to understand not only what drives its success, but also its potential weaknesses. 03/28/2014 FOCUS An exclusive in-depth report from a FRANCE24 correspondent, followed by comment and analysis with the author and the anchor in the newsroom in Paris. Cat Wreaks Havoc On Elections In Turkey?
*After Turks went to the polls in a round of contentious local elections on Sunday, power outages forced some voting centers to count votes by candlelight. Accusations of election fraud ran rampant, especially in the closely-watched races in the capital. In an attempt to ease voter worry, Turkey's Energy Minister Taner Yıldız has now come forward with a culprit for the power cuts: a cat. "I am not joking, friends," he said, according to the Agence France-Presse. "A cat walked into a transformer unit. That's why there was a power cut. It's not the first time this has happened." The statement prompted widespread ridicule and anger among Turks who are increasingly at odds with controversial Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his ruling party...* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down. *Read more here from Sophia Jones at The Huffington Post: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/04/01/turkey-election-power-outages-cat_n_5068226.html- published: 02 Apr 2014

Turkey: Erdogan claims victory in local elections
After what was seen as a test of his popularity, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has claimed victory in local polls. His Islamist-rooted AK party is on course to win between 43 and 47 percent of the vote. The strong showing could now encourage Erdogan to contest the presidency in an August election or introduce legislation allowing him to run for a fourth term. The opposition CHP trailed with 26 to 28 percent in an election campaign which has seen the government tighten its grip ... Erdogan came on stage with his wife, Emine, and briefly addressed the flag-waving crowd. After his speech he handed out gifts to his supporters, telling the crowd that people are watching the event "through their tv sets in happines, in envy, in admiration, maybe even in tears." The Turkish population will cast their votes in the presidential elections on Sunday, with election polls so far tipping Erdogan as the favourite among the candidates. In order to become president in the first round, the winning candidate needs to win by an absolute majority. Turkey to face tough elections
Prime Minister Recep Tayep Erdogan has called on his supporters to turn out in large numbers in a show of support ahead of Sunday's elections. Still trying to recover from corruption allegations aimed at top officials, the governing AK Party has come under criticism for restricting access to social media sites like Twitter and YouTube. Turkey's foreign minister has defended his government's decision to block YouTube and Twitter, saying the companies should abide by Turkish law and respect national security.
