It claimed eleven lives and is considered the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry, an estimated 8% to 31% larger in volume than the previously largest, the Ixtoc I oil spill. Following the explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, a sea-floor oil gusher flowed for 87 days, until it was capped on 15 July 2010. The total discharge has been estimated at 4.9 million barrels (210 million US gal; 780,000 m3).

Abby then goes over the impact on the Gulf ecosystem and wildlife, highlighting the millions of fish, birds, and mammals that have died as a result of the spill. The film is called THE BIG FIX, and documents how irresponsibility and lack of accountability led to one of the worst environmental disasters ever. According to scientists, the oil is STILL leaking into the ocean, and according to Josh Tickell, BP continues to pour corexit chemical to hide this massive disaster. Rebecca Tickell has a permanent skin condition called "tar smarting", most likely as a result of being exposed to a mixture of corexit and petroleum during the filming of this documentary. She can no longer go into the sun without being covered. Rebecca mentions in the interview that her toxicologist told her that women living in the region are having increasing miscarriages and malformed babies.

This documentary is a log-book of our crossing of the United States of America, few months before the Midterm elections of Barack Obama’s presidency. Our trip took us from the Gulf of Mexico at the worst time of the BP’s oil spill to the city of Chicago, home of President Obama. We tried to see what was left of the hope, dreams and great enthusiasm raised by his historical election. During our journey to the heart of the United States, we met with the man of the street and local personalities: fishermen affected by the oil spill, opponents to Obama’s Health Reform, fans of the president, close collaborators, disappointed supporters… Their testimonies are raw and honest, touching and profound, sometimes violent. One thing is sure: if Obama is the coolest president abroad, he remains a controversial figure in his own country. He hopes that you do too. ############################################# Refineries' Bycatch (to BP Oil, on the Anniversary of Its Gulf Spill) I We’ve become your southern cesspool – swimming in swirling colors of chemical run-off, suffering with our deformities and cancers so you could have cheaper gas and non-stick frying pans. Drill, baby. Drill until you’ve killed us all. II We spill from your memory until the crude quits flowing in and rolling out again, just like our soiled river – meant only for your consumption. You said we weren’t worth the cost of rebuilding when the floods washed us out. Yet all the new-strung power-lines seemed to stop right at the refineries. The surrounding neighborhoods waited, festered three months longer to receive the same utilities they were dying for others to have. III My first birthday gift was a small town where the ratio of human to chemical hazard is still as imbalanced as its most-addled drunk. I grew up assuming smokestacks were where clouds came from. You’d beaten my little lungs into believing that this was what air tasted like. And my allergies still pay your punches their required tithes every winter. You’d muscled my malleable brain into thinking that this was all in the name of industry – creating jobs for the barely-educated roughnecking it to feed their unexpected children – too simple and too trusting to acknowledge the deathly particulates hunting them through sparse trees. You’d bribed my politicians to turn every blind eye, to prioritize our lives as worth less – just as long as they got their hefty chunk of black gold. IV My people are eroding within – brothers left chained to their lost coast – ever crumbling into the insatiable gulf.

Your business could still be entitled to compensation from BP after the oil spill. ALL MISSISSIPPI BUSINESSES The BP Claims Program is entering into its final months of claim acceptance, with the final deadline set as June 8th, yet the majority of Mississippi businesses still have not filed claims. Businesses are entitled and encouraged to file claims for indirect losses incurred after the April 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill. While there are an estimated 240,000 businesses in Mississippi, only approximately 36,000 claims from the state have been filed to date. All unclaimed funds go back to BP. The BP deep-sea crude oil drilling disaster in the Gulf of Mexico is the worst oil spill in US history. This is not the first catastrophic spill and, should we fail to respond, it will not be the last. This disaster should serve as a clear wake-up call to action. The path of destruction does not begin or end with this. Remember the Exxon Valdez spill, the worst crude oil spill until now? With one of the worst safety and maintenance records in the industry, BP plans to drill again in Alaska just miles away from a delicate wildlife reserve. BP has also entered into the tar sands in northern Alberta, Canada. The tar sands continue to be the site of human rights violations to Indigenous Peoples, environmental health problems, and water contamination. Tar sands mining emits three times more greenhouse gas pollution than traditional oil. The 'Fossil Foolish' Industry is an old idea — the time has come for the oil cartel to become caretakers rather than predators. Demand accountability from natural resource-extracting corporations and your government to recognize the Rights of Mother Earth and all her relations.

Profit Pollution and Deception BP and the Oil Spill FULL DOCUMENTARY HD The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (also referred to as the BP oil spill, the BP oil disaster, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and the Macondo blowout) began on 20 April 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect.

European markets fell again on Friday, as a Swiss-led sell-off overshadowed a string of strong corporate news from energy giant BP to French retailer Carrefour. BP rose in London after a U.S. court ruling put the maximum fine for the 2010 Gulf oil spill at $13.7 billion, well below the government’s $17.6 billion estimate. Carrefour rose up in Paris after posting a 4.1% gain in fourth-quarter organic sales as a boom in Brazil and Argentina offset a slump in China. Investors also cheered new ‘buy’ recommendations on Dutch brewer Heineken and French liquor maker Remy Cointreau from analysts at UBS. Seattle Post 2015-04-09The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (also referred to as the BP oil spill, the BP oil disaster the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and the Macondo blowout) is an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico which flowed unabated for three months in 2010, and continues to seep. It is the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry. The spill stemmed from a sea-floor oil gusher that resulted from the 20 April 2010, explosion of Deepwater Horizon, which drilled on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect. The explosion killed 11 men working on the platform and injured 17 others. On 15 July 2010, the gushing wellhead was capped, after it had released about 4.9 million barrels (780,000 m3) of crude oil. An estimated 53,000 barrels per day (8,400 m3/d) escaped from the well just before it was capped. It is believed that the daily flow rate diminished over time, starting at about 62,000 barrels per day (9,900 m3/d) and decreasing as the reservoir of hydrocarbons feeding the gusher was gradually depleted. On 19 September 2010, the relief well process was successfully completed, and the federal government declared the well "effectively dead". In August 2011, oil and oil sheen covering several square miles of water were reported surfacing not far from BP’s Macondo well. Scientific analysis confirmed the oil is a chemical match for Macondo 252. The Coast Guard said the oil was too dispersed to recover. In March 2012, a "persistent oil seep" near the Macondo 252 well was reported.
