The whooper swan (Cygnus cygnus), pronounced hooper swan, is a large Northern Hemisphere swan. It is the Eurasian counterpart of the North American trumpeter swan. Francis Willughby and John Ray's Ornithology of 1676 referred to the this swan as "the Elk, Hooper, or wild Swan".
The whooper swan is similar in appearance to the Bewick's swan. It is larger, however, at a length of 140–165 cm (55–65 in) and a wingspan of 205–275 cm (81–108 in). Weight typically is in the range of 7.4–14 kg (16–31 lb), with an average of 9.8–11.4 kg (22–25 lb) for males and 8.2–9.2 kg (18–20 lb) for females. The verified record mass was 15.5 kg (34 lb) for a wintering male from Denmark. It is considered to be amongst the heaviest flying birds. Among standard measurements, the wing chord is 56.2–63.5 cm (22.1–25.0 in), the tarsus is 10.4–13 cm (4.1–5.1 in) and the bill is 9.2–11.6 cm (3.6–4.6 in). It has a more angular head shape and a more variable bill pattern that always shows more yellow than black (Bewick's swans have more black than yellow).
In the video a whooper swan pair strengthens their bond by an elaborate and noisy dance act.
In this video you can hear a ca. 17-year-old Whooper Swan give me a concert on the ice of a freezing river in Central Finland in January, 2013. As the he video was shot late in the afternoon, there was a lack of light and the ambient light had got a bluish tint.

The video was shot in Finland in early January. Videolla jää murtuu yhden laulujoutsenen alla, ja se putoaa takaisin kylmään jokeen.

A small flock of captive and tame whooper swans (Cygnus cygnus), calling at the fence.
Near the Ribble Estuary National Nature Reserve, Lancashire, November 16th. 2012. About 120 birds in this herd but over 300 the previous day. Feeding on spoiled potatoes of which a lot this year. The field is adjacent to a proposed Fracking Gas site. Pink-Footed Geese calling overhead.
The Whooper Swan is similar in appearance to the Bewick's Swan. However, it is larger, at a length of 140-160 cm (55-63 in), a wingspan of 205-235 cm (81-93 in) and a weight range of 8-15 kg (17.6-33 lbs). It has a more angular head shape and a more variable bill pattern that always shows more yellow than black (Bewick's Swans have more black than yellow).
Is This Finnish Whooper Swan a Genius? It is commonly believed that birds don't have intelligence but this video may suggest otherwise. First the swan takes a ride on a small floating ice raft to reach the solid ice. Then, after resting a while, it steps back on the floe only to use it as an elevator to get back down in the water. Clever or what?
