A cantata (literally "sung", derived from the Italian word "cantare") is a vocal composition with an instrumental accompaniment, typically in several movements, often involving a choir.
The meaning of the term changed over time, from the simple single voice madrigal of the early 17th century, to the multi-voice "cantata da camera" and the "cantata da chiesa" of the later part of that century, from the more substantial dramatic forms of the 18th century (including the 200-odd church and secular cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach) to the usually sacred-texted 19th-century cantata, which was effectively a type of short oratorio. Several cantatas were written for special occasions, such as Christmas cantatas.
The term originated in the early 17th century simultaneously with opera and oratorio. Prior to that all "cultured" music was vocal. With the rise of instrumental music the term appeared, while the instrumental art became sufficiently developed to be embodied in sonatas. From the beginning of the 17th century until late in the 18th, the cantata for one or two solo voices with accompaniment of basso continuo (and perhaps a few solo instruments) was a principal form of Italian vocal chamber music.
Alexander Nevsky (Russian: Алекса́ндр Яросла́вич Не́вский (help·info), Aleksandr Yaroslavich Nevskiy; pronounced [ɐlʲɪˈksandr jɪrɐˈslavʲɪtɕ ˈnʲefskʲɪj]; 30 May 1220 – 14 November 1263, proclaimed Saint of the Russian Orthodox Church by Metropolite Macarius in 1547) was the Prince of Novgorod and Grand Prince of Vladimir during some of the most trying times in the city's history. Commonly regarded as the key figure of medieval Rus, Alexander was the grandson of Vsevolod the Big Nest and rose to legendary status on account of his military victories over the German and Swedish invaders while employing collaborationist policies towards the powerful Golden Horde.
From Tales of the Life and Courage of the Pious and Great Prince Alexander found in the Second Pskovian Chronicle, circa 1260–1280, comes one of the first known references to the Great Prince:
"By the will of God, prince Alexander was born from the charitable, people-loving, and meek the Great Prince Yaroslav, and his mother was Theodosia. As it was told by the prophet Isaiah: 'Thus sayeth the Lord: I appoint the princes because they are sacred and I direct them.' "... He was taller than others and his voice reached the people as a trumpet, and his face was like the face of Joseph, whom the Egyptian Pharaoh placed as next to the king after him of Egypt. His power was a part of the power of Samson and God gave him the wisdom of Solomon ... this Prince Alexander: he used to defeat but was never defeated ..."
Pedro Aznar (born 23 July 1959) is an Argentine musician, with a lifetime of experience in jazz, Argentinian folk music, and rock and has had a successful career as a solo artist. He is very well known for giving rock songs a jazz-oriented style, by playing the fretless bass, with a big influence from Jaco Pastorius. He is a multi-instrumentalist and the author of several books of poetry published in Argentina.
He is also an important figure in Argentine rock, where in the mid-1970s, he had various appearances with groups like ALAS and Pastoral. He became one of four members of Serú Girán in 1978, one of the most musically influential bands that dominated Argentina's rock circuit for the next four years. In 1982 he accepted an invitation from Pat Metheny to join The Pat Metheny Group as a vocalist, with whom he recorded three Grammy Award-winning albums.
Later he began his solo career, while also working scoring music to film soundtracks. His 1991 album Tango 4 with Charly García as a duo went platinum and was named best rock album of the year in Argentina by the Argentine Association of Entertainment Critics.
Johann Pachelbel ( /ˈjoʊhɑːn ˈpækəlbɛl/ or /ˈpɑːkəlbɛl/;German: [ˈjoːhan ˈpaxɛlbəl], baptised September 1, 1653 – buried March 9, 1706) was a German Baroque composer, organist and teacher, who brought the south German organ tradition to its peak. He composed a large body of sacred and secular music, and his contributions to the development of the chorale prelude and fugue have earned him a place among the most important composers of the middle Baroque era.
Pachelbel's music enjoyed enormous popularity during his lifetime; he had many pupils and his music became a model for the composers of south and central Germany. Today, Pachelbel is best known for the Canon in D, the only canon he wrote – although a true canon at the unison in three parts, it is often regarded more as a passacaglia, and it is in this mode that it has been arranged and transcribed for many different media. In addition to the canon, his most well-known works include the Chaconne in F minor, the Toccata in E minor for organ, and the Hexachordum Apollinis, a set of keyboard variations.
Peter Schreier (born 29 July 1935) is a German tenor and conductor.
Schreier was born in Meissen, Saxony, and spent his first years in the small village of Gauernitz, near Meissen, where his father was a teacher, cantor and organist. In June 1945, when Schreier was almost ten years old, and just a few months after the destruction of Dresden, he entered the boarding school of the famous Dresden boys' choir, the Dresdner Kreuzchor (Choir of the Kreuzkirche or Church of the Cross). The choir had just been re-established. The young Peter and the few other choir members and teachers lived in a cellar in the outskirts of Dresden.
The conductor of the Kreuzchor, Rudolf Mauersberger, soon recognized Peter Schreier's great talent. He let him sing many solo alto parts and also created compositions that perfectly fitted Peter's boy voice. Solo recordings of Peter Schreier were made at the time (1948-1951) and are obtainable on compact disc even today.
Schreier was 16 years old when his voice broke, and he became a tenor, as he had passionately wished, because of the several Evangelists - all tenors - in J.S. Bach's Passions and in his Christmas Oratorio. After he had decided to become a professional singer he took lessons, at first privately, then later on at the Dresden Academy of Music. He had enough time to also study choral and orchestral conducting.
I feel like a stranger in this home I built for you
And I can't understand this awful change you're going through
But lately I've been watching you grow colder day by day
And I'd rather be gone than in your way
I'd rather be gone than in your way I'd rather see someone else here in my place
And if I decide on leaving my world will end today
But I'd rather be gone than in your way
[ guitar ]
I'd rather be gone...
And she did and it did and Lord knows I didn't and I know I'll never again
She left me somewhere between it's over and the end
With more than an effort to destroy any man
There'll never be another to share the love that live
Cause her leaving left me no love to give
I knew if she left me it would surely destroy me
I'll never forget her for the love we had then
And she did and it did and Lord knows I didn't and I know I'll never again
[ fiddle + steel ]
I knew if she left me...
I hold her close and try to do the things you never did
I love her like a woman and tease her like a kid
I do the things I hope will bring sunshine to her life
She'll be yours to hurt tomorrow but she's mine to love tonight
She'll hurry home tomorrow to pretend that she's a wife
But if you show just a little love she woudn't be here tonight
She's found warmer lips to kiss her loving arms to hold her tight
She'll be yours to hurt tomorrow but she's mine to love tonight
[ steel ]
What a shame that you forgot what this woman's love can bring
If you just do the things you did before you changed her name
But until then I'll be the man who brightens up her life
She'll be yours to hurt tomorrow but she's mine to love tonight
She'll hurry home tomorrow...
I just lay here at night I toss and I turn loving you so how my heart yearns
Honey you're the reason I don't sleep at night
Walking the floor feeling so blue smoke cigarettes drink coffee too
Honey you're the reason I don't sleep at night
Well I'm bettin' you're not losin' sleep over me
I believe if I'm wrong don't fail to call come over and keep me company
Sometimes I go for a walk take a look at the moon
Strum my guitar sing out of tune honey you're the reason I don't sleep at night
Walking the floor feeling so blue smoke cigarettes drink coffee too
Strum my guitar sing out of tune losin' sleep over you
Well I'm bettin' you're not losin'...
Mhm you're the reason mhm you're the reason
Mhm you're the reason mhm you're the reason
You lay so easy on my mind oh so easy on my mind
Whenever I need you all I have to do is close my eyes
You lay so easy on my mind oh so easy on my mind
Wrap me in your warmness and let me feel your body close to mine
Everything you say and do finds me wanting more of you
And each moment brings to life a million dreams
Heaven's something real yes it's something I can feel
When I feel your angel touch all over me
You lay so easy on my mind oh so easy on my mind
Oh there's not a thought of me your sweet love don't reach to satisfy
Every day I need you more you're the one I'm living for
And the best you'll ever give you've given me
You completely satisfy every need I have inside
And I pray you'll never take your love from me
You lay so easy on my mind oh so easy on my mind
Oh there's not a thought of me that your sweet love don't reach to satisfy
Oh there's not a thought of me that your sweet love don't reach to satisfy
Doing wrong is not a heavy on mind
But tonight I know I did for the very first time
Soon I'll pace you for I love you without a doubt
You make it hard to take the easy way out
I'll confess and hope that you understand
Then I'll beg you to forgive this one mistake in your man
Yes I'll admit I can't back on your account
You make it hard to take the easy way out
You make it hard to take the easy way out
To lose your love would be the end there's no doubt
The hurt I feel is only shame I brought about
You make it hard to take the easy way out
I would just like to say dear thank you for making my life all it should be
Life's not the same your love has changed dear you love the best out of me
You are my dreams coming true I'm doing everything I've ever wanted to do
You've made me all I've ever wanted to be you love the best out of me
[ steel ]
There's not a place I'd rather be than with you
I'll never want for nothing more than now I see
A piece of mind all the time I'm with you you love the best out of me
You are my dreams...
You've made me all I've ever wanted to be you love the best out of me
I came home last night about a quarter past four without a worry on my mind
I slowly slipped through the kitchen door I thought I was doing right fine
But when I sneaked into my room and started to slip in the bed
I found the note into the wall and this is what it said
You done lost your baby lost your baby lost your baby tonight
You done lost your baby honey baby you just ain't been treatin' your baby right
You come home every night about a quarter past four
And then you come a sneakin' through the kitchen door
You done lost your baby lost your baby lost your baby tonight
Well my knees started shakin' and my stomach was achin'
And my head went into a spin
I said this just couldn't happened to me this must be a dream that I'm in
So I stood there a shakin' for a minute or two and then I sat down on the bed
But when I opened her note once more still it plainly read
You done lost your baby lost your baby lost your baby tonight
You done lost your baby honey baby you just ain't been treatin' your baby right
Oh well you trifled on your bed so many times before
But you ain't gonna trifle on your baby no more
You done lost your baby lost my baby lost your baby tonight yeah
Well I used think the color of love would be a rosy red or a pretty pink
And I thought it would be a thirsty man crawlin' home to get a big old drink
And I thought love was spelled like a bell B-E-double L bell that you ring
Stead of wham bam hit your man with a pan
Hit him on the head hear the birdies sing
Oh you heart breakin' love makin' cut me-a-piece-of-bacon man of mine
And you money shiftin' flour siftin' nose liftin' rose of woman kind
Just keep on doin' what you're doin' and what you're doin' suits me just fine
And love I tell you somethin' else you blow my mind
Well I used to think the color of love would be a soft green like a pea in a pod
And I thought love would strike like a light flashin' down a big old lightnin' rod
And I thought love was spelled W-E-double L well that would never run dry
Instead of choke choke I'm so broke and dry I can't afford a little bitty tear to cry
Oh you money turnin' egg churnin' butter burnin' baby of mine
You half crazy lean and lazy pretty as a wilted daisy man of mine
Just keep on doin'...
You blow my mind you blow my mind you blow my mind you blow my mind
Have you found since you turned me down the one that you were searching for
Are you glad since you made me sad for you know I vowed to love you ever more
What did you have in mind when you broke this heart of mine
Are you laughing in my face
Darling what can I do when you say we are through
You've left a wound time can't erase
[ steel ]
Tell me dear are you satisfied to be foot loose and fancy free
Is it power you want for the things you have done
What you've gained I guess I'll never see
What did you have in mind...
I live in the world world of forgotten people
Who've loved and lost their hearts so many times
I'm here in the world world of forgotten people
Where every heart is aching just like mine
Well I've loved and I've been loved but I had a reckless heart
And the many dreams I had I torn apart
Now I find I was wrong too late I'm all alone alone in a world of broken heart
I live in the world...
[ steel ]
I live in the world...
Working girl working girl I love you working girl and all the things that you do
Mhm I don't know what I would do if you should up and leave just sit and grieve
Sit and grieve working girl
Working girl you've got money all of the time
Working girl pay my debt and treat me fine
Ah I don't know if I could take it if she should up and go I love you so
I love you so working girl
[ guitar ]
Give me money when I'm down working girl she takes me out on the town working girl
Each time I think it's over she makes me see she loves just me only me working girl
Buy me rings expensive things working girl cowboy boots a swinging clothes working girl
Shany car credit cards and that ain't all
When I'm with you I walk real proud I walk real tall
Working girl working girl I love you working girl I love the things that you do
With pen in hand you signed your name today at five I'll be on that train
And you'll be free and I will be alone so alone
If you think we can't find the love we once knew
If you think I can make everything up to you
Then I'll be gone and you'll be on your own you'll be on your own
Can you take good care of Johnny can you take him to school everyday
Can you teach him how to catch a fish and keep all those bullys away hear what I say
Can you teach him how to whistle a tune
Can you tell him about the Man in the Moon
If you can do these things then maybe he won't miss me maybe he won't miss me
And tonight as you lay in that big lonely bed
Can you look at the pillow where I laid my head
And with your heart on fire will you have no desire to kiss me and to hold me
And if you can forget the good times we had
If you think that the good times won't outweigh the bad
Then sign your name and I'll be on my way I'll be on my way hmm hmm
I'm the center of attention in this barroom
Cause I've got the biggest heartache of the year
And each night those swinging doors reach out for me and draw me in
Cause they know each night that I'll come back to wine me up again
Wine me up turn me on and watch me cry for you
Lately drinking warm red wine is all I wanna do
And I never know how title wine me up till I walk in
But I don't care cause I'll be back to wine me up again
[ steel ]
I'd like to thank to men who raised the grapes in California
And I'm hoping this will be their biggest year
Cause scarlet water's all that's left to keep me hanging on
And that's why I'll try to wine me up each day and night next year
Wine me up turn me on...
I've been living a new way of life that I love so
But even now the clouds're gathering and the storm will wreck our home
I thought we belonged together that our hearts fit like a glove
I was wrong for I've been watching from the window up above
You must have thought that I was sleeping and I wish that I had been
But it's best to get to know you and the way your heart can sin
For last night he hugged you tightly and you didn't even shove
This is true for I've been watching from the window up above
[ steel ]
From my eyes the teardrops started as I listened on and on
I heard you whisper to him softly that our marriage was all wrong
Well I hope he makes you happy that you'll never lose his love
But I was wrong for I've been watching from the window up above
How I wished I could be dreaming and wake up to a love that's true
I was wrong for I've been standing at the window watching you
Just outside these prison bars a hanging tree is waiting
At sunrise I'll meet darkness and death will say hello
Darling touch your lips to mine and tell me that you love me
And hold me close once more before I go
Will you visit me on Sunday will you bring me pretty flowers
Will your big blue eyes be misty will you brush away a tear
A grave is filled with silence but if a sleeping man could hear
Darling you'd hear my footsteps up here
[ piano + steel ]
I promise you that time won't seperate you from my mem'ry
That I'll remember you until the days of silver hair
If not for you I know I'd lose my mind before the morning
Hold me close and tell me that you care
Will you visit me on Sunday...
Yes I'll you visit you on Sunday and I'll bring you pretty flowers
You wouldn't read my letter if I wrote you you asked me not to call you on the phone
But there's something I'm wanting to tell you so I wrote it in the words of this song
I didn't know God made honky tonk angels
I might have known you'd never make a wife
You gave up the only one that ever loved you and went back to the wild side of life
[ steel - piano ]
The glamour of the gay night life has lured you
To the places where the wine and liquor flow
Where you wait to be anybody's baby and forget the truest love you'll ever know
I didn't know God made...
I wonder who'll turn out the lights in your world tonight
Whose shoulder will your head be restin' on
Does your hungry arms reach for someone you feel you need
Will the need still be there when he's gone
As I reach for the switch that turns out my lights
I wonder who'll turn out the lights in your world tonight
Has someone found a secret that I couldn't find
Is he touching that old switch that I've touched so many times
Is he turning on the woman I could never satisfy
I wonder who'll turn out the lights in your world tonight
[ steel ]
Has someone found a secret...
(Whew whay soway) white lightning
[ guitar ]
In the Arkansas mountains way back in the hills lived my old pappy we had us a still
We brewed white lightning till the sun went down
And we take out a jug and we pass it around
Mighty mighty pleasin' my pappy's corn squeezin' (whew whay soway) white lightning
[ guitar ]
Well I asked my old pappy why he called his brew
White lightning stead of mountain dew
I took a little sip and right away I knew my eyes bugged out (and my face turned blue)
Lightning started splashin' thunder started crashin' (whew whay soway) white lightning
[ guitar ]
Well the G men T men revenoers too searchin' for the place where he made his brew
They were lookin' tryin' to book him but my pappy kept on cookin'
(Whew whay soway) white lightning
[ guitar - steel ]
Well a city slicker came and he said I'm tough
I gotta have a drink of that powerful stuff
He took one drink and he slug it right down
And I heard him a moanin' as he hit the ground
Mighty mighty pleasin' your pappy's corn squeezin' (whew whay soway) white lightning
[ guitar ]
Well the G men T men...
Lately I watched strange changes overcome you
Destroying the loving part of you I knew
You're letting someone turn you into a stranger
And when the final change is made I won't have you
When the final change is made I won't have you
Someone's got you chasing rainbows in your mind
He already owns your conscience but he's not true
Cause when the final change is made he'll have you
When the final change is made he'll have you
But he'll never own the part of you I love
And I'll turn to that loving part of you I knew
Cause when the final change is made I'll still want you
Yes when the final change is made I'll still love you
Let's forget unpleasent memories let them lie there in the past
Make believe here in my arms is where you belong
Yes I need you to love me each night when I'm alone
When I turn off my light your mem'ry turns on
I return the love she gives me till you mem'ry gets so strong
I exist in a house where I don't feel at home
How can love feel so right and still feel so wrong
When I turn off my light your mem'ry turns on
When I turn off my light your mem'ry turns on
Then I turn and reach for you and again find you're gone
But you stay with her she loves you and she's never done you wrong
When I turn off my light your mem'ry turns on
Still when I turn off my light your mem'ry turns on
What am I living for if not for you,
What am I living for if not for you,
What am I living for if not for you,
oh nobody else, nobody else will do
What am I longing for each lonely night,
To feel your lips to mine, to hold you tight
You'll be the only girl my whole life through,
Oh nobody else, nobody else will do
I want you close to me that's all I know,
I want you all the time because darling I love you so
What am I living for if not for you,
What am I living for if not for you,
What am I living for if not for you,
Baby nobody else, nobody else will do
What am I living for if not for you,
Darling nobody else, nobody else will do
nobody else, nobody else will do
I've seen these teardrops fill your eyes so many times before
And each time I tell myself I won't hurt you anymore
I know you know that hurting you's not part of my plan
It's just part of the weakness in your man
It seems I never say the things that I want you to know
I love you but I know sometimes I just don't let it show
I guess I just expect you to stand by and understand
It's just part of the weakness in your man
I know you love me and I know how hard you try
You do everything you can to satisfy
I never mean to do the things I know I sometimes do
And I'll forget the little things that mean so much to you
But you take all this and with one sweet kiss I know you'll understand
It's just part of the weakness in your man
It's just part of the weakness in your man
We both agree we shouldn't be so much in love this way
Although it's wrong we go along just lovin' more each day
We act so proud out in the crowd while another wears my name
We've opened up our hearts to love and closed our eyes to shame
We've opened up a patience we can't fight
And closed our eyes to everything that's right
She won't agree to set me free still we get all the blame
We've opened up our hearts to love and closed our eyes to shame
[ steel ]
We've opened up a patience we can't fight
And closed our eyes to everything that's right
We're victims of forbidden love we play a losin' game
We've opened up our hearts to love and closed our eyes to shame
Your arms are not the first to hold me tight
But your arms are the last to hold me right
Darling we found something oh so rare
And we're caught between a love and a love affair
How I wish I could turn back the hands of time
If I could only do it over you'd be mine
And my arms would give the watch to keep you there
Oh we're caught between a love and a love affair
So we'll just slip around and see each other when we can
Cause you care for your woman and you care for your man
So we just can't find within what we have here
Oh we're caught between a love and a love affair
Yes we're caught between a love and a love affair
Walk me to the door and hold me close just one more time
Kiss me just once more the way you did when you were mine
The longest walk I'll ever take will be across that floor
That's why I'm asking one last favor walk me to the door
I love another won't you let me be these are the words that you said to me
How can I go through life without you like it was before
When I can even make it to the door
Walk me to the door...
[ steel ]
I promise I won't try to make commands I know I don't deserve you back again
My trembling lips are begging now they never did before
Just one last favor walk me to the door
Walk me to the door...
Please don't take you out of us
You took the happy out of happiness you took the love out of loveliness
Take all these precious things from me if you must
But please don't take you out of us
You took the tender out of tenderness you took the hope out of hopefulness
Take all these precious things from me if you must
But please don't take you out of us
Take everything away that's keeping me alive
And you can take away my memory I still survive
Take all the happiness that I've ever known
Take all the tenderness that you've ever shown
Take all these precious things from me if you must
But please don't take you out of us
Up comes the bottle and down goes the man I can't help him but I can understand
When up comes the bottle and down down down goes the man
You may find him anywhere there's heartache and despair
With loneliness so heavy you can feel it in the air
And the only thing that matters is the drink in his hand
Then up comes the bottle and down down down goes the man
You can read between the lines of his withered face
See defeat in his eyes that keeps searching every place
Just when he tells you he can quit you see the tremble in his hands
Then up comes the bottle and down down down goes the man
Up comes the bottle and down goes the man
There's just one thing can stop him the love of my woman is all that can
For he loves her you see but she left him for me
I can't help him but I can understand
When up comes the bottle and down down down goes the man
We had just set our wedding day and I took you home
And went to a quiet place to celebrate alone
Then I heard your laughter and turned in time to see
You enter with someone a stranger to me
Two of the usual I heard him say two of the usual in a two familiar ways
The truth has no mercy or kindness it seems
For two of the usual just shattered my dreams
My body was trembling down to my fingertips
With your goodnight kisses still warm on my lips
I sat there in darkness alone and afraid
And my world turned to pieces at the order he gave
Two of the usual...
Darlin' where did all the time go it's two a.m. again
It's time to leave each other's arms and the lyin' to begin
The love would fill you and me with them we'll never find
We're just two lonely people in a loving frame of mind
We're just two lonely people that need the love we found
I'm not man enough to let you go but I just can't put her down
Two lonely people the same need the same time
We're just two lonely people in a loving frame of mind
Two lonely people with too much love too late
Too much to lose anyway we choosed to ever separate
So we'll pretend we'll love and then love would plan another time
We're just two lonely people in a loving frame of mind
[ steel ]
Two lonely people...
(Roy C. Bennett - Sid Tepper)
Turn your pretty face to mine
Lift your pretty eyes from the ground
I forgive you every way
Oh, turn around, turn around.
Though you left me for a new love
And your new love turn you down
I forgive you every way
Oh, turn around, turn around.
Though I've been hurt
Yes, and I've been blue
But I've never turned
My back on you.
Turn your pretty face to mine
Lift your pretty eyes from the ground
I forgive you every way
Oh, turn around, turn around...
Well I stopped at a roadhouse in Texas 'twas a little place called Hamburger Dan's
And Ieard that jukebox a playing' song about a truck drivin' man
Pour me another cup of coffee for it is the best in the land
I'll put a nickel in the jukebox and play the Truck Drivin' Man
[ guitar ]
The waitress just poured me some coffee I thanked her and called her again
I said that old song sure does fit me cause I'm a truck drivin' man
Pour me another cup of coffee...
[ steel ]
I climbed back aboard my old semi and then like a flash I was gone
I got them old truck wheels a rolling yeah I'm on my way to San Antone
Pour me another cup of coffee...
And play the Truck Drivin' Man and play the Truck Drivin' Man
Touch The Hand
Today I heard my woman say something I never heard her say before
She just told me that she was going to leave me and that she didn't love me anymore
But I know that the loving kindness and the understanding is still there somewhere
So I'm gonna get down on my knees and I'm gonna say to my baby
Touch the hand of the man that made you a woman
Then tell me you don't love me anymore
I was the first man to ever
Hold you in a special kind of way
And those unfamiliar feelings that caused you to tremble
I know you remember today
Before you decide that your gonna leave me
And do things you've never done before
Touch the hand of the man that made you a woman
Then tell me you don't love me anymore
The two lips that once held sweet surprises
Surprised me and said goodbye today
And those two lovin' arms that use to reach for me
Just reached out and pushed me away
I know you believe you don't love me
Before you walk out that door
Touch the hand of the man that made you a woman
Then tell me you don't love me anymore
Today I started loving you again I'm right back where I've really always been
I got over you just long enough to let my heartache mend
And today I started loving you again
What a fool I was to think I could get by with only these few million tears I cried
I should have known the worst was yet to come
And crying time for me had just begun
Today I started loving...
And today I started loving you again
See her there see her crying she thinks she loves him so
She don't know how much it hurts me to hear her beg him not to go
If she were mine again I'd never let the tears fill her eyes
She don't know how much it hurts me to see an angel cry
Once she built her world around me but like a fool I tore it down
And she begged me not to leave her just the way she's doing now
Now she's begging to another with that same hurt in her eyes
She don't know how much it hurts me to see an angel cry
I didn't know how much I loved her till she turned and walked away
I didn't know how much I hurt her till I saw her here this way
If she were mine I'd hold her forever and dry the tears from her eyes
She don't know how much it hurts me to see my angel cry
It's common knowledge everybody knows I love you
When cheatin' caused you wear another's name
Every night I swear tomorrow I'll forget you Lord I can't
I'll keep hurtin' till the pain outwears the shame
So I'll be back in your arms again tomorrow
We'd led us part a stolen love become a burning flame
It's wrong and I should go but when I do I know
I'll be hurtin' till the pain outwears the shame
[ steel ]
Tonight I love you for the last time then I'll say goodbye
But down inside I know it's all in vain
Before I'll leave the hurt's already startin' I can't go
I think it's over till the pain outwears the shame
So I'll be back in your arms...
She tried to hide it by the faded denim clothes she wore
But I knew she'd never been inside a bar before
And I felt like a peasant who just had met a queen
And she knew I saw right through those tight fittin' jeans
I asked her, "What's a woman like you, doin' here?
"I see you're used to champagne but I'll buy you a beer."
She said: "You've got me figured out but I'm not what I seem,
And for a dance I'll tell you 'bout these tight fittin' jeans."
She said: "I married money. I'm used to wearin' pearls.
"But I've always dreamed of bein' just a good ol' boy's girl.
"So tonight I left those crystal candle-lights to live a dream.
"And pardner, there's a tiger in these tight fittin' jeans."
We danced ev'ry dance and, Lord, the beer that we went through.
I'm satisfied I did my best to make her dream come true.
As she played out her fantasy before my eyes it seemed.
A cowgirl came alive inside those tight fittin' jeans.
In my mind she's still a lady, that's all I'm gonna say.
I knew that I'd been broken by the time we parted ways.
And I know I held more woman than most eyes have ever seen,
That night I knew a lady wearin' tight fittin' jeans.
Well now she's back in her world and I'm still stuck in mine,
But I know I'll always remember the time,
A cowboy once had a millionaire's dream,
And Lord, I loved that lady wearin' tight fittin' jeans.
Well this road that I walk is a mighty lonely road
It's low that I bear to mighty heavy load
And this song that I sing is a mighty lonely song
I had a true love but I done her wrong (he had a true love but he done her wrong)
Well this road that I walk it has no end
And on this road I walk I have no friends
The people that I pass are people just like me
Who do forever walk this road of misery
(He had a true love but he done her wrong now he walks this road of misery alone)
Well this road that I walk is for fools like you
This road that I walk you're gonna walk it too
Each step that you take leads you up very smart
You had a true love but you broke her heart
You had a true love but you done her wrong
Like me you must walk this road of misery alone
You had a true love but you done her wrong
Like me you must walk this road of misery alone
It's over I've known it for a long time so I went out and found somebody new
She gave me the kind of love I wanted and I found in her the things I lost in you
I loved you darlin' how I loved you I still recall each tender memory
But there's one thing I guess I'll never understand
What made you turn and walk away from me
I thought it would last for a lifetime I didn't think you'd ever prove untrue
Oh but it's over I found someone who really cares
And I found in her the things I lost in you
Oh the fault it started drippin' in the kitchen
And last night your picture fell down from the wall
Today the boss said sorry I can't use you anymore
And just then the life all went out in the hall
Things have gone to pieces since you left me
Nothing turns out half right now it seems
There ain't noithing in my pocket but three nickels and a dime
But I'm holding to the pieces of my dream
[ vibes ]
Things have gone to pieces...
Any girl who hangs out in a honky tonk who smokes my cigarettes and drinks my wine
Some call her a bad girl but to me she means the world
Cause she's holding these lonely hands of mine
She listens while I cry on her shoulder she runs her slender fingers through my hair
Other men may hold her tight but right now tonight
She's holding these lonely hands of mine
She's holding the hands that once held you so tight
She smiles each time I call her by your name
She listens to my same sad story every night
She says I'm right and she gives you the blame
Any girl who hangs out...
Cause she's holding these lonely hands of mine
You'll find there's more love in the arms you'll be leaving
Than all the good you'll ever find in goodbye
The words I love you came easy for a while but lately they're gettin' harder to say
I can't help notice then the sadness in your smile
I know he's on your mind again today
I hold you close but it's never close enough and I know that he's the reason why
You'll find there's more love...
Could it be you've been leaving without saying a word
Or have you tried to tell me and I just haven't heard
Was I dreaming last night or did I hear my baby cry
You'll find there's more love...
Than all the good you'll ever find in goodbye
There stands the glass that will ease all my pain
It will settle my brain it's my first one today
There stands the glass fill it up to the brim
Till my troubles grow dim then I'll be on my way
I wonder where you are tonight I wonder if you are all right
I wonder if you think of me in my misery
There stands the glass...
I wonder where you are tonight...
(Buddy Kaye - David Hill - Ethel Lee)
Time to say goodbye I know I've said it before
Though I hate to go I can't be hurt anymore
You've never seen me with a tear in my eye
The next kiss is the last goodbye.
When I'm not around there's someone else you can call
Half a love is worse than havin' nothin' at all
I needed your love and darlin' that's why
The next kiss is the last goodbye.
No more holding hands
No more whispering words tenderly
Know it breaks my heart
There's no way for me.
Time to say goodbye is nothing else that I can do
Wish you all the luck with your somebody knew
If I said I'd forget I'd be telling a lie
The next kiss is the last goodbye.
Just one more kiss and then baby goodbye...
She's never in the spotlights but everybody knows that she's the star
And once she shines opon you she'll make you truly proud of where you are
She'll wipe away the pain of all the dues she had to pay
When the curtain to her world starts to unfold
With mother tender hand she will applaud and feed the hunger in your soul
And she's known as the Grand Ole Opry where the legend come to call
She's the queen of country music she's the grandest lady of them all
She sings of desperados and lonesome whistle love and midnight train
And the coal mines of Kentucky and how it feels to be out in the rain
She sings of Texas cowboys of hoboes and the heroes
And the loneliness up where and prison blues
But most of all she sings about the common people just like me and you
And she's known as...
You're just a kind of girl everybody wants to meet
You've got a way about you when you walk down the street
That makes me wonder if I'm gonna lose your love someday
And I'm the kinda guy that don't stand in your way
All my life I've been afraid of losing you although you never really done me wrong
But there's always the chance you might find someone new
And break the heart that loves you for so long
You're just a kind of girl...
[ steel ]
You're just the kind of girl that likes to have some fun
And though I'm jealous of you it's alright
Just as long as I am still the only one you turn to when it's time to say goodnight
You're just a kind of girl...
Does she seem a little cold when you love her
Does she turn away when you hold her tight
Just search your soul and you will discover how you hurt her night after night
And when was the first time she begged you to love her
But you turned away and acted like a fool
And when was the first time she laied there and cried
Well that's when she started to stop loving you
[ steel ]
Do you wonder why she's turning to another
And if you love her you'd better tell her so
Cause she's learning that anyone will love her
And it won't be long until you'll have to let her go
And when was the first time...
That's what it's like to be lonesome I know cause I'm a mighty lonesome guy
The streets are dark and empty and you walk them all alone
You think about your love affair and wonder what went wrong
You go to bed each night and pray you'll never see the dawn
Afraid of each tomorrow with its heartless cold unknown
And that's what it's like to be lonesome a heart a broken love has taught to cry
And that's what it's like to be lonesome I know cause I'm a mighty lonesome guy
You search to find a tavern where the music's playing loud
You try to lose your heartache in the laughter of the crowd
But the happy couples make you think of things that might have been
And you have to fight the teardrops till you're by yourself again
And that's what it's like to be lonesome...
Take me take me to your darkest room close every window and bolt every door
The very moment I heard your voice I'd be in darkness no more
Take me to your most barren desert a thousand miles from the nearest sea
The very moment I saw your smile it would be like heaven to me
There's not any mountain too rocky to climb no desert too barren to cross
Somewhere if you could just show a sign of love I could bear any loss
Take me to Siberia and to coldest weather of the wintertime
It would be just like spring in California as long as I knew you were mine
There's not any mountain...
Well if your heartaches are many and your friends are few
Yes darlin' I sympathize with you
If your days your days're lonely and your nights are blue
Yes darlin' I sympathize with you
Well if you want someone to love you hey I'll try oh how I'll try
And if you need someone to hold you now close by his side
Yeah I'll try I'll try to hide the tears oh you cried darlin' I sympathize with you
[ piano - guitar ]
Well if you want someone...
