The Islamic State, a hardline Sunni jihadist group that formerly had ties to al Qaeda, has conquered large swathes of Iraq and Syria. Previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group has announced their intention to reestablish the caliphate and declared their leader, the shadowy Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the caliph.
Flush with cash and US weapons seized during recent advances in Iraq, the Islamic State’s expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken over new areas in northern Iraq, encroaching on Kurdish territory and sending Christians and other minorities fleeing as reports of massacres emerged.
Elsewhere in territory it has held for some time, the Islamic State has gone about consolidating power and setting up a government dictated by Sharia law. While the world may not recognize the Islamic State, in the Syrian city of Raqqa, the group is already in the process of building a functioning regime.
VICE News reporter Medyan Dairieh spent three weeks embedded with the Islamic State, gaining unprecedented access to the group in Iraq and Syria as the first and only journalist to document its inner workings. In part one, Dairieh heads to the frontline in Raqqa, where Islamic State fighters are laying siege to the Syrian Army’s division 17 base.

Thousands of Christians are reported to be fleeing after Islamic militants seized the minority's biggest town in Iraq.
The Islamic State (IS) group captured Qaraqosh in the north overnight after the withdrawal of Kurdish forces.
An international Christian organisation said at least a quarter of Iraq's Christians were leaving Qaraqosh and other surrounding towns.
IS has seized large parts of Iraq and Syria to create an Islamic caliphate.
Kurdish forces, known as the Peshmerga, have been fighting the Sunni militants in the north for weeks.
The French organisation Fraternite en Irak said on its Facebook page (in French) that a majority of inhabitants of Nineveh province had fled as the militants took over Qaraqosh.
The town, home to some 50,000 Christians, is located 30km (19 miles) southeast of the city of Mosul, which was captured by IS in June.
According to Fraternite en Irak, the commander of the Peshmerga in Qaraqosh told the town's archbishop late on Wednesday that the forces were abandoning their posts.
The Kurdish fighters also retreated from other surrounding Christian towns, including Tel Eskof and Qaramless.
Several archbishops in Nineveh have now confirmed that the towns had fallen.
Iraq is home to one of the world's most ancient Christian communities, but numbers have dwindled amid growing sectarian violence since the US-led invasion in 2003.

The lightning advances the Islamic State made across Syria and Iraq in June shocked the world. But it's not just the group's military victories that have garnered attention — it's also the pace with which its members have begun to carve out a viable state.
Flush with cash and US weapons seized during its advances in Iraq, the Islamic State's expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken over new areas in northern Iraq, encroaching on Kurdish territory and sending Christians and other minorities fleeing as reports of massacres emerged.
VICE News reporter Medyan Dairieh spent three weeks embedded with the Islamic State, gaining unprecedented access to the group in Iraq and Syria as the first and only journalist to document its inner workings.

Title: Main opposition party delays ferry bill agreement as families rebuff

The passage of a bill aimed at uncovering the truth about the Sewol-ho ferry sinking has been delayed yet again... after family members of the victims said they could not accept a bipartisan agreement reached on Tuesday by Korea′s ruling and main opposition parties.
With the July provisional session of the Assembly having ended on Tuesday,... the main opposition party has unilaterally requested another extraordinary session, which will start on Friday,... to give lawmakers time to pass the special bill.

The deal struck on Tuesday by the country′s two main parties on the Sewol-ho ferry bill will likely need to be tweaked.
Saenuri Party floor leader Lee Wan-koo and his main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy counterpart Park Young-sun announced their agreement on the last day of the National Assembly′s month-long extraordinary session with relieved smiles as the bill took weeks of wrangling.
But the opposition party ended up having to hold another five hour-long meeting after the bereaved families′ rejected the bill.
The families were still dissatisfied with the make-up of the committee members charged with handling the investigation.
"Four spots on the panel will be allocated to lawmakers. Two will be reserved for the main opposition party and two for the ruling party. We will appoint our share of the two, only after seeking approval from the opposition and families of the ferry victims."
"We′re disappointed that the rival parties made agreements in this way, which is saddening the bereaved families once again."
The majority of the opposition party say the families′ rejection means the bill cannot be passed, but a few members say there is no more time for delay.
The ruling party′s floor leader said further renegotiations are not possible at this moment, as the governing party had already conceded to giving special prosecutorial powers, as demanded by the main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy.
An extraordinary parliamentary session on the issue will be held Friday.

Connie Lee has more. A spokesperson for the Pentagon has revealed the U.S. attempted a rescue operation in Syria earlier this summer... not only to free U.S. journalist James Foley... but also other American hostages being held in Syria by Islamic State militants.
It was a secret, major rescue operation... launched by U.S. Special Forces against the Islamic State.
The Pentagon′s statement on Wednesday said the operation "involved air and ground components"... but, did not succed... "because the hostages were not present at the targeted location."
This new information came.. as the U.S. launched a wave of new airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Iraq.
On the same day, President Barack Obama... stated that the U.S. will be "relentless" in the fight against the militant group, following the "brutal murder" of Mr. Foley.
President Obama... who said he was "heartbroken" over the incident... said the U.S. will "do what′s necessary to see that justice is done"...
and compared the militant group to "cancer" whose spread must be stopped.
The president′s message came less than a day after the militants released a video of the American journalist being beheaded.
The Islamic State is believed to be holding several American hostages, including journalist Steven Sotloff.

Previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group has announced their intention to reestablish the caliphate and declared their leader, the shadowy Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the caliph. Flush with cash and US weapons seized during recent advances in Iraq, the Islamic State’s expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken over new areas in northern Iraq, encroaching on Kurdish territory and sending Christians and other minorities fleeing as reports of massacres emerged. Elsewhere in territory it has held for some time, the Islamic State has gone about consolidating power and setting up a government dictated by Sharia law. While the world may not recognize the Islamic State, in the Syrian city of Raqqa, the group is already in the process of building a functioning regime. VICE News reporter Medyan Dairieh spent three weeks embedded with the Islamic State, gaining unprecedented access to the group in Iraq and Syria as the first and only journalist to document its inner workings. Saenuri Party floor leader Lee Wan-koo and his main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy counterpart Park Young-sun announced their agreement on the last day of the National Assembly′s month-long extraordinary session with relieved smiles as the bill took weeks of wrangling. An Islamic state (Arabic: الدولة الإسلامية, al-dawla al-islamiyya) is a type of government, in which the primary basis for government is Islamic religious law. From the early years of Islam, numerous governments have been founded as "Islamic", beginning most notably with the Caliphate established by Mohammad himself and including subsequent governments ruled under the direction of a caliph (meaning, "successor" to the prophet Mohammad).
However, the term "Islamic state" has taken on a more specific modern connotation since the 20th century. The concept of the modern Islamic state has been articulated and promoted by ideologues such as Abul Ala Maududi, Ayatollah Ruhallah Khomeini, and Sayyid Qutb. Like the earlier notion of the caliphate, the modern Islamic state is rooted in Islamic law. It is modeled after the rule of Mohammad. However, unlike caliph-led governments which were imperial despotisms or monarchies (Arabic: "mulk"), a modern Islamic state can incorporate modern political institutions such as elections, parliamentary rule, judicial review, and popular sovereignty.

Imam Shabir Ally is the president of the Islamic Information & Dawah Centre International in Toronto, Canada. He is a Muslim activist, preacher and speaker on Islam and Muslims.[citation needed] He is also a debater engaging in regular debates in different parts of the world.[citation needed]
He holds a B.A. in Religious Studies from Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, with a specialization in Biblical Literature, and an M.A. in Religious Studies from the University of Toronto with a specialization in Quranic Exegesis.[citation needed] He is now in his fourth year of PhD studies in Quranic Exegesis at the University of Toronto.[citation needed] He currently teaches Arabic at the University of Toronto.
Ally is known for accepting literal interpretation of the Quran verses, but seeks to find their justification in similar expressions within the Christian Bible.
