PAM symptom onset occurs 1 to 7 days after exposure, and symptoms of infection are similar to bacterial or viral meningitis, including headache, fever, stiff neck, anorexia, vomiting, altered mental state, seizures, and coma
Naegleria fowleri is a heat-loving (thermophilic) ameba able to grow and survive at higher temperatures, such as those found in hot springs and in the human body, even under fever temperatures. Naegleria fowleri grows best at higher temperatures up to 115°F (46°C) 10. Although the amebae may not be able to grow well, Naegleria fowleri can still survive at higher temperatures for short periods of time. The trophozoites and cysts can survive from minutes to hours at 122-149°F (50-65°C) with the cysts being more resistant at these temperatures

The amoeba cannot be contracted from drinking contaminated water, officials said.
The water system where the amoeba was found serves 12,577 people in three Louisiana towns.
While the source of the contamination was not found, officials said that they found the water supply did not have the required level of chlorine disinfectant and was vulnerable to contamination from Naegleria fowleri.
There have been no reports of infections from the amoeba in the area.
To kill the dangerous pathogens the department will flush the system with extra high levels of the chlorine for sixty days to kill any lingering amoebas in the system. The water will still be safe to drink.
While the amoeba is extremely rare, the pathogen was responsible for at least three deaths in Louisiana parishes since 2011. Last year a 4-year-old boy from St. Bernard Parish was killed after contracting the infection from using a slip-in-slide.
This summer a 9-year-old girl from Kansas died after being infected with the amoeba.
"Families can take simple steps to protect themselves from exposure to this ameba, the most important being to avoid allowing water to go up your nose while bathing or swimming in a pool," said Louisiana State Health Officer Jimmy Guidry. "It is important to remember that the water is safe to drink; the ameba cannot infect an individual through the stomach."
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control the symptoms of an infection from Naegleria fowleri include headache, fever and nausea. As the disease progresses, infected people can have seizures, altered mental status, hallucinations and slip into a coma.
The disease is almost always fatal. In the U.S. between 1963 and 2013, just three people out of 132 managed to survive the infection, according to the CDC.

She was admitted to Arkansas Children's Hospital on July 19 with a high fever and vomiting. Doctors cooled her body to prevent brain swelling and treated her aggressively with two antifungal drugs known to have helped two previous PAM survivors and an experimental drug called miltefosine.
Hardig's mother said her daughter is not speaking normally but can say "yes" and "no" and "Hi mama," "daddy" and "nanny."
In a Facebook post on August 20 her family said: "She walked across the room with a person on each side holding her arms and then back to the other side. Then she threw the basketball in the goal and swung a bat at blocks! She set up in bed and watch T.V. and really enjoyed the show!"
Doctors attribute Hardig's survival to early detection and the experimental drug, though a boy recently treated for PAM with the same drug did not survive.

Brain Eating Naegleria Fowleri Amoeba found in 2 Louisiana Parish Water Systems St. Bernard Parish and De Soto Parish How to help Protect your Family from this deadly Brain Eating Amoeba Louisiana public water system has brain eating amoeba The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed the presence of a rare brain eating amoeba in five test locations of a northwest Louisiana water system We are working closely with the water system and parish officials to ensure that the chlorine levels are increased to a level that will eliminate the risk of exposure to the amoeba CDC Zachary Reyna Kali Hardig Almost 130 people have contracted primary amoebic meningoencephalitis in the past 50 years and only one other besides Kali have survived, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Naegleria Fowleri , a free-living amoeba commonly found in warm, typically untreated freshwater such as lakes, ponds, and rivers. However, it also can be found in warm groundwater and inadequately treated swimming pools and Parish and or County Water Systems PAM symptom onset occurs 1 to 7 days after exposure, and symptoms of infection are similar to bacterial or viral meningitis, including headache, fever, stiff neck, anorexia, vomiting, altered mental state, seizures, and coma Naegleria fowleri is a heat-loving (thermophilic) ameba able to grow and survive at higher temperatures, such as those found in hot springs and in the human body, even under fever temperatures. Naegleria fowleri grows best at higher temperatures up to 115°F (46°C) 10. Although the amebae may not be able to grow well, Naegleria fowleri can still survive at higher temperatures for short periods of time. The trophozoites and cysts can survive from minutes to hours at 122-149°F (50-65°C) with the cysts being more resistant at these temperatures- published: 10 Oct 2013

Naegleria fowleri, a brain-eating amoeba, is commonly found in warm freshwater (like lakes, rivers and hot-springs) and can cause a rare and devastating infection of the brain called primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). The Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) in Louisiana and the CDC confirmed the presence of Naegleria fowleri in two treated public drinking water systems in September-October 2013.- published: 28 May 2014

Deadly Brain-Eating Amoeba Found in Louisiana Water Supply
Deadly Brain-Eating Amoeba Found in Louisiana Water Supply
Louisiana officials have cautioned residents to be careful after a deadly brain-eating amoeba was found in a parish water supply. The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals announced that the Naegleria fowleri amoeba was found in the water system of St. John the Baptist Parish. The microscopic amoeba can be deadly if contaminated water travels through the nose to the brain. The microscopic pathogen can cause a deadly form of meningitis that or a swelling of the brain and surrounding tissues. The amoeba cannot be contracted from drinking contaminated water, officials said. The water system where the amoeba was found serves 12,577 people in three Louisiana towns. While the source of the contamination was not found, officials said that they found the water supply did not have the required level of chlorine disinfectant and was vulnerable to contamination from Naegleria fowleri. There have been no reports of infections from the amoeba in the area. To kill the dangerous pathogens the department will flush the system with extra high levels of the chlorine for sixty days to kill any lingering amoebas in the system. The water will still be safe to drink. While the amoeba is extremely rare, the pathogen was responsible for at least three deaths in Louisiana parishes since 2011. Last year a 4-year-old boy from St. Bernard Parish was killed after contracting the infection from using a slip-in-slide. This summer a 9-year-old girl from Kansas died after being infected with the amoeba. "Families can take simple steps to protect themselves from exposure to this ameba, the most important being to avoid allowing water to go up your nose while bathing or swimming in a pool," said Louisiana State Health Officer Jimmy Guidry. "It is important to remember that the water is safe to drink; the ameba cannot infect an individual through the stomach." According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control the symptoms of an infection from Naegleria fowleri include headache, fever and nausea. As the disease progresses, infected people can have seizures, altered mental status, hallucinations and slip into a coma. The disease is almost always fatal. In the U.S. between 1963 and 2013, just three people out of 132 managed to survive the infection, according to the CDC. Source: ABC News- published: 28 Aug 2014

However, it also can be found in warm groundwater and inadequately treated swimming pools and Parish and or County Water Systems PAM symptom onset occurs 1 to 7 days after exposure, and symptoms of infection are similar to bacterial or viral meningitis, including headache, fever, stiff neck, anorexia, vomiting, altered mental state, seizures, and coma Naegleria fowleri is a heat-loving (thermophilic) ameba able to grow and survive at higher temperatures, such as those found in hot springs and in the human body, even under fever temperatures. Naegleria fowleri grows best at higher temperatures up to 115°F (46°C) 10. Although the amebae may not be able to grow well, Naegleria fowleri can still survive at higher temperatures for short periods of time. Kali Hardig contracted the Naegleria fowleri parasite while swimming at a park in south Little Rock, Arkansas, according to the Arkansas Department of Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She was admitted to Arkansas Children's Hospital on July 19 with a high fever and vomiting. Doctors cooled her body to prevent brain swelling and treated her aggressively with two antifungal drugs known to have helped two previous PAM survivors and an experimental drug called miltefosine. Hardig's mother said her daughter is not speaking normally but can say "yes" and "no" and "Hi mama," "daddy" and "nanny." In a Facebook post on August 20 her family said: "She walked across the room with a person on each side holding her arms and then back to the other side. Then she threw the basketball in the goal and swung a bat at blocks! She set up in bed and watch T.V. and really enjoyed the show!" Doctors attribute Hardig's survival to early detection and the experimental drug, though a boy recently treated for PAM with the same drug did not survive. The single-celled Naegleria fowleri parasite is found in warm, fresh water. It causes a type of meningitis known as primary amebic meningoencephalitis, or PAM. Naegleria fowleri (
/nəˈɡlɪəriə/; also known as "the brain-eating amoeba"[citation needed]) is a free-living excavate form of protist typically found in warm bodies of fresh water, such as ponds, lakes, rivers, and hot springs. It is also found in soil, near warm-water discharges of industrial plants, and unchlorinated swimming pools in an amoeboid or temporary flagellate stage. There is no evidence of this organism living in ocean water. It belongs to a group called the Percolozoa or Heterolobosea. It is an amoeba, described as such by the CDC, NCBI, articles on pubmed, and WHO.
N. fowleri can invade and attack the human nervous system. Although this occurs rarely, such an infection nearly always results in the death of the victim. The case fatality rate is estimated at 98%.
Physicians M. Fowler and R. F. Carter first described human disease caused by amebo-flagellates in Australia in 1965. Their work on amebo-flagellates has provided an example of how a protozoan can effectively live both freely in the environment, and in a human host. Since 1965, more than 144 cases have been confirmed in a variety of countries. In 1966, Fowler termed the infection resulting from N. fowleri primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) in order to distinguish this central nervous system (CNS) invasion from other secondary invasions caused by other true amoebas such as Entamoeba histolytica. A retrospective study determined that the first documented case of PAM possibly occurred in Britain in 1909.
