Sute Lake Safaris M.V. Mwande..Our Dream... "I remember... It all began in April 2012... With An incident on Lake Malawi, where refugees from Horn Of Africa drowned trying to cross the lake from Tanzania to Malawi. Then one Friday evening, shortly after that, I shared a dream with two colleagues about a desire to venture on a passenger ferry to operate on the lake. Against expectations, everyone agreed and after a few cold rounds were enjoyed, it was only later that evening that i shared this dream with my wife, it was met with an endless laugh and I was left alone in the sitting room as she went to bed, still laughing.... I remained stuck in my chair until very late pondering over this new venture as it not only haunted me, but also excited me. Later the next morning my wife woke me, still laughing at what I had told her the night before because she knew that we had no funds to pursue this crazy dream. When I woke, it was as if I never slept at all. It was then that I decided to pursue this crazy idea, which started my search to find a suitable vessel. This took me as far as Antigua, Bahrain, Algeria and finally South Africa. In Malawi there is a saying "Nzeriu Nchuma" and in Swahili "Akili ni mali" and this means: 'a good idea has merit'. My biggest challenge was to find funding for this project and I had no experience with maritime affairs, but as I spoke of my concept, it was accepted with welcome and embrace by the majority financing institutions until this dream became a reality today"... Sute Lake Safaris Limited was established and registered as my family limited company in Malawi in 2012. I, Mr Sute Mwakasungula is the founding Managing Director, while my wife, Neema Mwakasungula is the CFO. Our children, Kalima, Kikolo and Maria are directors. I have over 30 years experience in livestock consultancy. I was the founding Managing Director of Small Scale Livestock and Livelihoods program from its inception in 1996 to date. Neema Mwakasungula is an accountant with 13 years experience working with international NGO's like, ELDP, ELDS, FIDP and KAKI Investments. Kalima is a agriculturist with an advance diploma in economics, while Kikolo is a student pursuing environmental biology. Maria has a certificate in early child development. Our goal is to provide a safe and efficient lake transport for Malawians and any visitors wanting to experience our richest resource, Lake Malawi. Sute Lake Safaris is based in Nkhata Bay, Malawi. Our booking office is based within the premises of the Department of Fisheries, within short walking distance to the jetty. Sute Lake Safaris owns and operates a 12 meter T-Craft 78 passenger catamaran, powered by 300 horsepower Mercury outboards motors with a range of 120 nautical miles. Onboard this vessel are all the luxury facilities including two toilets with running water, handbasin, music and refreshments available to buy for the voyage. The vessel is capable of cruising up to 17 knots while equipped navigation, safety equipment and buoyancy devices are onboard to meet all local and international regulatory requirements.
