And finally we explore the penal system in French Guiana, and specifically Henri Charrière and his book Papillon, the greatest story of prison escape every told, and where he eventually escaped to, Venezuela (with a glorious look at the Angel Falls in Canaima National Park).

French Guiana (French: Guyane française; French pronunciation: [ɡɥijan fʁɑ̃sɛz]; officially just Guiana, French: Guyane) is an overseas department and region of France on the north Atlantic coast of South America. It borders Brazil to the east and south, and Suriname to the west. Its 83,534 km2 (32,253 sq mi) area has a very low population density of less than 3 inhabitants per km2, with half of its 239,450 people in 2012[1] living in the metropolitan area of Cayenne, its capital. By land area, it is by far the largest overseas region of France. As an oversea region, it is inside the European Union.
The addition of the adjective "French" in English comes from colonial times when five such colonies existed (The Guianas), namely from west to east: Spanish Guiana (now Guayana Region in Venezuela), British Guiana (now Guyana), Dutch Guiana (now Suriname), French Guiana, and Portuguese Guiana (now Amapá, a state in far northern Brazil). French Guiana and the two larger countries to the north and west, Guyana and Suriname, are still often collectively referred to as the Guianas and comprise one large shield landmass.

Johan van 't Hof, Dennis Lo Tam Loi, Bryan Rozen, Jeroen Stolk, Ronald Rooij en Irene van der Zwan doorkruisen de drie Guyana's -- Suriname, Guyana en Frans-Guyana -- én Brazilië tijdens de Isuzu D-Max Guianas Challenge 2013.
Na drieënhalve week en 6.150 kilometer moet de duurzaamheid en kwaliteit van de nieuwste D-Max benadrukt zijn. De zes voeren hun tocht uit in twee dubbelcabines en één extended cab. Lo Tam Loi, een bekende rallyrijder, heeft ooit gereden tot Macapá. "Dit wordt spannender, omdat er zwaarder terrein is. We kruisen de Amazonerivier twee keer", vertelt hij.
Ook bij Rooij klinkt het enthousiasme. "Het is een uitdaging, maar is wel te doen." Behalve zin in avontuur, hebben de mannen andere raakvlakken. "We rijden al een tijdje", vertelt Rooij. Onder meer hebben ze meegedaan aan de savannerally en kwamen zo in contact met Jeroen, via wie ze Bryan van Casas ontmoetten. "We zijn ook allemaal luchtvaartminded", verklapt Rooij. "Johan bijvoorbeeld kennen we van de zweefvliegerij in Nederland."
De trip begint vrijdagavond bij McDonald's Hermitage Mall. Eerste stop is Nickerie, waarna de oversteek naar Guyana volgt. Na 1.700 kilometer wordt Brazilië (Boa Vista) binnengereden. Met 5.500 kilometer op de teller arriveert de groep te Oyapock (Frans-Guyana) om op 5 november na 6.000 kilometer weer op Surinaamse bodem te zijn.

The Wild Coast: An Exploration of the Guianas
The Wild Coast: An Exploration of the Guianas

The Wild Coast is a physical, historical and philosophical exploration of the Guianas, the three countries that make up the northeast of South America. None of these three countries speak Spanish as an official language and one has English as the official language. They are quite unique and still very much wild and untamed. In our filming the main theme of the Guianas is freedom. As you will see in the film, freedom has both been trampled on and clinged-to at very great costs. The film explores what happened at Jonestown, where 900 people died during a mass suicide/murder led by cult leader Jim Jones in 1973. It explores the freedom-loving Maroon people of Suriname who were brought as slaves from Africa but rebelled against their slave owners establishing their own communities in the jungle and fighting back against their former slave masters. This group later would fight against the Marxist dictator president of Suriname, Desi Bouterse during the Suriname Guerilla War. And finally we explore the penal system in French Guiana, and specifically Henri Charrière and his book Papillon, the greatest story of prison escape every told, and where he eventually escaped to, Venezuela (with a glorious look at the Angel Falls in Canaima National Park).- published: 23 Jul 2014

Johan van 't Hof, Dennis Lo Tam Loi, Bryan Rozen, Jeroen Stolk, Ronald Rooij en Irene van der Zwan doorkruisen de drie Guyana's -- Suriname, Guyana en Frans-Guyana -- én Brazilië tijdens de Isuzu D-Max Guianas Challenge 2013. Na drieënhalve week en 6.150 kilometer moet de duurzaamheid en kwaliteit van de nieuwste D-Max benadrukt zijn. De zes voeren hun tocht uit in twee dubbelcabines en één extended cab. Lo Tam Loi, een bekende rallyrijder, heeft ooit gereden tot Macapá. "Dit wordt spannender, omdat er zwaarder terrein is. We kruisen de Amazonerivier twee keer", vertelt hij. Ook bij Rooij klinkt het enthousiasme. "Het is een uitdaging, maar is wel te doen." Behalve zin in avontuur, hebben de mannen andere raakvlakken. "We rijden al een tijdje", vertelt Rooij. Onder meer hebben ze meegedaan aan de savannerally en kwamen zo in contact met Jeroen, via wie ze Bryan van Casas ontmoetten. "We zijn ook allemaal luchtvaartminded", verklapt Rooij. "Johan bijvoorbeeld kennen we van de zweefvliegerij in Nederland." De trip begint vrijdagavond bij McDonald's Hermitage Mall. Eerste stop is Nickerie, waarna de oversteek naar Guyana volgt. Na 1.700 kilometer wordt Brazilië (Boa Vista) binnengereden. Met 5.500 kilometer op de teller arriveert de groep te Oyapock (Frans-Guyana) om op 5 november na 6.000 kilometer weer op Surinaamse bodem te zijn.- published: 12 Oct 2013

The Guianas, sometimes called by the Spanish loan-word Guyanas (Las Guayanas) refers to a region in north-eastern South America which includes the following three territories:

Before the arrival of European explorers, the Guianas were populated by scattered bands of Arawak Indians. The native tribes of the Northern Amazon are most closely related to the natives of the Caribbean; most evidence suggests that the Arawaks immigrated from the Orinoco and Essequibo River Basin in Venezuela and Guiana into the northern islands, and were then supplanted (and, occasionally, eaten) by more warlike tribes of Carib Indians, who departed from these same river valleys a few centuries later. Over the centuries of the pre-Columbian period, the ebb and flow of power between Arawak and Carib interests throughout the Caribbean resulted in a great deal of intermingling (some forced through capture, some accidental through contact). This ethnic mixing, particularly in the Caribbean margins like the Guianas, produced a hybridized culture. Despite their political rivalry, the ethnic and cultural blending between the two groups had reached such a level that, by the time of the Europeans' arrival, the Carib/Arawak complex in Guiana was so homogenous that the two groups were almost indistinguishable to outsiders. Through the contact period following Columbus's arrival, the term "Guiana" was used to refer to all areas between the Orinoco, the Rio Negro, and the Amazon, and was seen so much as a unified, isolated entity that it was often referred to as the “Island of Guiana.”

Timothy Franz Geithner (
/ˈɡaɪtnər/; born August 18, 1961) is an American economist, central banker, and civil servant. He is the 75th and current United States Secretary of the Treasury, serving under President Barack Obama. He was previously the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
Geithner's position includes a large role in directing the Federal Government's spending on the late-2000s financial crisis, including allocation of $350 billion of funds from the Troubled Asset Relief Program enacted during the previous administration. At the end of his first year in office, he continued to deal with multiple high visibility issues, including administration efforts to restructure the regulation of the nation's financial system, attempts to spur recovery of both the mortgage market and the automobile industry, demands for protectionism, President Obama's tax changes, and negotiations with foreign governments on approaches to worldwide financial issues.
Geithner was born in Brooklyn, New York City, the son of Deborah (née Moore) and Peter Franz Geithner. His father was the director of the Asia program at the Ford Foundation in New York in the 1990s. Geithner's father is of German descent, and Geithner's paternal grandfather, Paul Herman Geithner (1902–1972), emigrated with his parents from the Thuringian town of Zeulenroda to Philadelphia in 1908. Geithner's mother, a Mayflower descendant, is from a New England family. Geithner's maternal grandfather, Charles Frederick Moore, Jr., was an adviser to President Dwight D. Eisenhower and served as Vice President of Public Relations from 1952 to 1964 for Ford Motor Company.
