Let's use our freedom of speech and jump into the top five dystopias in gaming! 5. 'The City' - Mirror's Edge Now why is it that free-running and authority work so well together? Because screw you, authority! That's why! In Mirror's Edge's unnamed city of white-washed buildings Big Brother always has its eye on you. Good thing you and your 'Runner' compadres are pretty hard to catch. 4. Mars - Red Faction Guerilla The EDF in Red Faction Guerilla has forced Martian miners into a permanent state of unfree labour to supply earth with resources. It's a direct rip-off of Total Recall in almost every way, but the point stands that when mining operations finally do open up on Mars, we're not going to rush to apply. 3. Columbia - BioShock Infinite While Rapture is a dystopia in ruin, Columbia is a dystopia in motion. At the very peak of its power over the people under the regime of the highly-deluded and quite-clearly-insane Zachary Comstock. Behind the peach-coloured walls and juicy candy apples there lies immense trouble up in the clouds. 2. City 17 - Half-Life 2 These famous words are heard upon entry to City 17 in Half-Life 2. A quite friendly welcome into unfamiliar territory for some and the signing of a prison sentence for others. The Soviet-like regime tracks your every move making it a true nightmarish dystopia of the future. 1. Arstotzka - Papers, Please The fictional Communist country of Arstotzka may be one of the very latest gaming dystopias, but that won't stop it from going down in history. It's a truly bone-chilling place under the watchful eye and the iron thumb. Gritty and realistic, playing Papers, Please will make you feel how this game looks.
