Beginning of the chapter on 'nematodes' in my undergraduate thesis project, entitled 'Tardigrades'. Nematodes are unsegmented roundworms. The most well known of the nematodes are larger parasitic varieties used in medicine or the microscopic c. elegans used as a model organism in research. Tardigrades are also nicknamed water bears or moss piglets. They are microscopic animals most commonly found in mosses or along ocean shores. They have a similar appearance to bears and have eight legs. Some are armored, some are not. The full thesis film is a 20 minute natural history documentary on tardigrades, rotifers, nematodes, and other micro and meioscopic organisms. The production process went on for 11 months of 2008. Over 190 samples were taken from mosses, soils, leaf litter, water bodies, and the like. Six of the samples contained tardigrades. In addition to the film, a 100 page thesis paper was completed on the topics of wildlife film theory, semiotics in biological descriptions, natural history background of the animals found, and observational data.
