In the Book of Samuel, Abner (Hebrew אבנר "Avner" meaning "father of [or is a] light"), is first cousin to Saul and commander-in-chief of his army (1 Samuel 14:50, 20:25). He is often referred to as the son of Ner.
Abner is only referred to incidentally in Saul's history (1 Samuel 17:55, 26:5), and is not mentioned in the account of the disastrous battle of Gilboa when Saul's power was crushed. Seizing the youngest but only surviving of Saul's sons, Ish-bosheth, Abner set him up as king over Israel at Mahanaim, east of the Jordan. David, who was accepted as king by Judah alone, was meanwhile reigning at Hebron, and for some time war was carried on between the two parties.
Abner Jay (1921 – 1993) was an American multi-instrumentalist, who is best known for performing eccentric, blues infused folk music, as a one man band. His idiosyncratic lyrics and style can also be considered within the realm of outsider music.
Jay was born in Fitzgerald, Georgia. His father and grandfather were both slaves in Washington County, Georgia. His grandfather was also a banjo player and imparted a vast repertoire of old-time and folk songs to Abner. He started playing in medicine shows when he was 5. In 1932 he joined the Silas Green from New Orleans Minstrel Show and would later go on to lead the WMAZ Minstrels on Macon radio from 1946–56, before going solo. He spent many years travelling the American South and playing concerts from his “converted mobile home that opened up into a portable stage, complete with amplification and home furnishings”. These concerts, as evidenced in his recordings, were often equal parts spoken word (jokes, philosophical asides, rants) and music. Common instruments on his recordings include harmonica, drum kit, a six-string banjo (that Jay claimed was made in 1748), and the “bones”, which were chicken and cow bones that had been bleached in the sun and used to create percussion. Jay’s song repertoire included field songs, Pentecostal hymns and minstrel tunes. He once described himself as the “last working Southern black minstrel”. He also performed original material that was mostly secular, and subjects ranged from politics, relationships, war, the bible and depression. In later years he held a residency, playing shows and selling his LPs and cassette tapes at Tom Flynn's Plantation Restaurant in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Anthony Braxton, renowned American composer and philosopher, called Jay an "American Master".
Abner Mares Martínez (born November 28, 1985 in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico) is a Mexican undefeated professional boxer. Mares is the current WBC Super Bantamweight Champion. Abner medaled repeatedly in international amateur tournaments for Mexico. Mares grew up in the city of Hawaiian Gardens, California.
Although Mares is undefeated, the legitimacy of his record is in question due to multiple controversial victories and decisions he has received, such as against the likes of Yonnhy Perez, Vic Darchinyan and Joseph Agbeko.
Mares was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico and at age seven his family moved to the city of Hawaiian Gardens, California. At age fifteen he was sent back to Mexico by his father.
As an amateur, Mares compiled a record of 112-8 with 84 KOs. Mares won the U17 World Championships and the bantamweight gold medal at the Central American games 2002 beating Juan Manuel López and the silver medal in the same division in 2003 at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo. At the Junior World Championships 2004, he finished second losing to Aibek Abdimomunov. He participated in the 2004 Summer Olympics for his native country. There he was beaten in the first round of the Bantamweight (54 kg) division by Hungary's Zsolt Bedák in a highly controversial decision.
Jhonny González (born September 15, 1981, in Mexico City, Mexico) is a Mexican professional boxer and is the current WBC featherweight champion. He is also a former WBO bantamweight champion, and a former IBO featherweight champion.
On October 29, 2005, González defeated Ratanachai Sor Vorapin by a technical knockout in the seventh round, for the WBO bantamweight championship. On May 27, 2006, he defended it successfully against Fernando Montiel with a 2-1 split decision.
While still holding the title he won from Sor Vorapin, Gonzalez went up in weight and attempted to capture the WBC super-bantamweight title on September 16, 2006. However, he lost to Israel Vázquez by a knockout and chose to return to bantamweight.
His second defense of his WBO bantamweight title was also successful when González beat former IBF flyweight champ Irene Pacheco on March 30, 2007. On his third defense however, González was dethroned by 35 year old Gerry Penalosa, who knocked him out in the 7th round on August 11, 2007.
Leodegario "Leo" Santa Cruz (born August 10, 1988 in Huetamo, Michoacán, Mexico) is an undefeated Mexican professional boxer in the Bantamweight division and is the current WBC Youth World Bantamweight Champion.
Leodegario had an amateur record of 148-7 and at only fifteen years old he won a gold medal at the World Amateur Championships.
On October 21, 2010 Santa Cruz beat the veteran James Owens at the Martin's Valley Mansion in Cockeysville, Maryland.
In March 2011, Leodegario knocked out the veteran Stephane Jamoye to win the vacant WBC Youth World Bantamweight Championship.

Sick of leaving in the morning
With the night you gave away
So now I'm gonna take that all that I can get
With those angel eyes
You make saints do sins all the time
Say I'm gonna stay, home and away, well well,
When I said I'd catch you when you're falling
I'd have my heart open wide
And you who's not naive I thought
Say I thought I'd mend my heart
People say I'm so automatic
People say I'm not so systematic
When I'm down I'm in manual, lord
And time on time again I walk on by
With the look of love
And with those angel eyes, woh woh
You set me on fire baby
And with those angel eyes, woh woh
C'mon now baby
The saddest thing I've ever seen on my tv screen
Was a dying man who died for his dream
Toughest thing I've ever heard
Was that new-born scream in this naked world
People say I'm so automatic
People say I'm not so systematic
When I'm down I'm in manual, lord
And time on time again I walk on by
With the look of love
And with those angel eyes, woh woh
You set me on fire baby
And with those angel eyes, woh woh
C'mon now baby
Say I'm gonna stay home and away
Show a little loving that'll make you shine girl
Say I'm gonna stay home and away
People say that I'm so automatic
People say I'm not so systematic
When I'm down I'm in manual, lord
Been all around those edges
But ain't never been in love
Ain't never been in love before babe
Never been in love
Never been in love
Set me on fire, baby
And with those angel eyes, woh woh
Set me on fire, fire
And with those angel eyes, woh woh
