Where ever you look in nature you will find patterns. From the seeds in the flower under your nose to the flow of the wind around you and the flock of swallows overhead, some patterns keep occurring again and again.
The essence of mathematics is a series of simple rules that produce complex consequences. And nowhere are these complex consequences more apparent than in the natural world.
In 1948, Warren Weaver identified what he called complex systems. These are systems where individual parts act independently of each other, while still following a set of simple rules.

Warren Weaver
Warren Weaver, PhD (July 17, 1894 – November 24, 1978) was an American scientist, mathematician, and science administrator. He is widely recognized as one of the pioneers of machine translation, and as an important figure in creating support for science in the United States.
Career
Weaver received three degrees from the University of Wisconsin–Madison: a Bachelor of Science in 1916, a civil engineering degree in 1917, and a Ph.D. in 1921. He became an assistant professor of mathematics at Throop College (now California Institute of Technology). He served as a second lieutenant in the Air Service during World War I. After the war, he returned to teach mathematics at Wisconsin (1920–32). Weaver married Mary Hemenway, one of his fellow students at Wisconsin, a few years after their graduation. They had a son, Warren Jr., and a daughter, Helen.
Weaver was director of the Division of Natural Sciences at the Rockefeller Foundation (1932–55), and was science consultant (1947–51), trustee (1954), and vice president (from 1958) at the Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research. His chief researches were in the problems of communication in science and in the mathematical theory of probability and statistics.

"I'm teaching a course at the university of Texas, where I've been inviting -- well -- gaming luminaries to talk to me for three hours, from the perspective of, "Hey -- I've known you for 20 years, don't try to con me and let's talk about the stuff that typically doesn't get talked about." It's part of an oral history project -- because we are all still alive. Well, not all of us -- Dani Bunten's gone and a couple of others. But we're getting to the point where the pioneers are not going to be here forever. We need to get it recorded for future generations before it's lost, in the same way that lots of early film history is lost. Gone. Never known. I don't want that to happen to us, as I really believe that videogames are the medium of the 21st century, in the same way that movies and TV were the medium of the 20th century. Weaver's inspiration has borne fruit in this century, as statistical techniques have enabled us to build translation systems for many languages, with increasing accuracy. But other fruitful connections between code-breaking and translation are only starting to emerge. Kevin Knight is a Senior Research Scientist and Fellow at the Information Sciences Institute of the University of Southern California (USC), and a Research Professor in USC's Computer Science Department. He received a PhD in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University and a bachelor's degree from Harvard University. His research interests include natural language processing, automata theory, machine translation, and decipherment. In 2011, he served as President of the Association for Computational Linguistics.

Is the world more peaceful today than it was last year? How does one even measure peace and violence in the world and in specific countries? On Tuesday, January 20 at 6 p.m. at the Great Hall, come to hear Aubrey Fox, Executive Director of the United States office of the Institute for Economics and Peace lead a discussion on the Institute's Global Peace Index, Global Terrorism Index, and Mexico Peace Index. This is a free, public event co-sponsored by The Global Forum at I-House and the San Diego World Affairs Council.
A published author, Aubrey Fox has extensive experience in the nonprofit sector. For nearly 15 years prior to joining IEP, Aubrey was a member of the senior leadership team of the Center for Court Innovation, an organization which helps the justice system aid victims, reduce crime, strengthen neighborhoods, and improve public trust in justice. His work included launching the Centre for Justice Innovation, an institution that seeks to promote thoughtful criminal justice reform in the United Kingdom. Aubrey was also the founding project director of Bronx Community Solutions, a one-of-its-kind initiative that provides alternative-to-incarceration sentences to over 10,000 misdemeanor offenders annually.
Aubrey graduated with a Master’s degree in public policy from the University of California at Berkeley, served as a VISTA Volunteer in San Antonio, Texas, was a Warren Weaver Fellow at the Rockefeller Foundation and a member of Coro’s Leadership New York program. His work has appeared in Newsday, the Gotham Gazette, Judicature, the Justice System Journal and Court Review, among other publications. Finally, he is the co-author of Trial & Error in Criminal Justice Reform: Learning from Failure (Urban Institute Press, 2010).
