Drug Cartel México Latest Exclusive (Los Zetas ) 2013
Los Zetas (Zetas, Zs) is a powerful and violent criminal syndicate in Mexico, and is considered by the U.S. government to be the "most technologically advanced, sophisticated, and dangerous cartel operating in Mexico. The origins of Los Zetas date back to 1999, when commandos of the Mexican Army's elite forces deserted their ranks and decided to work as the armed wing of the Gulf Cartel, a powerful drug trafficking organization In February 2010, Los Zetas broke away from their former employer and formed their own criminal organization. Los Zetas are well armed and equipped, and unlike other traditional criminal organizations in Mexico, drug trafficking makes up at least 50% of their revenue, while a large portion of the income comes from other activities directed against both rival drug cartels and civilians Los Zetas are well armed and equipped, and unlike other traditional criminal organizations in Mexico, drug trafficking makes up at least 50% of their revenue, while a large portion of the income comes from other activities directed against both rival drug cartels and civilians; their brutal tactics, which include beheadings, torture and indiscriminate slaughter, show that they often prefer brutality over bribery. Los Zetas are also Mexico's largest drug cartel in terms of geographical presence, overtaking its rivals, the Sinaloa Cartel. Los Zetas also operate through protection rackets, assassinations, extortion, kidnappings, and other criminal activities. The organization is based in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, directly across the border from Laredo, Texas.- published: 30 Aug 2013

Mellado was the number two leader of the criminal group that operates near the U.S. border and is known for its extremely violent methods, which include routinely decapitating rivals and hanging their bodies from bridges. On Friday morning, Mellado was hiding in a house in Reynosa after escaping from prison, where was being held on accusations of armed robbery, murder and rape. According to a report in La Cronica, Mexican forces tracked him down and surrounded the house he was in. Grenades were lobbed from the house and shots fired at the troops, while several carloads of gunmen armed with rifles and grenades arrived at the scene, apparently in support of Mellado. Following the firefight, Mellado's body was found in the house next to a submachine gun. Five gunmen and one soldier also died in the clash. The Zetas, famous for their extremely violent methods, control more territory in Mexico than any other criminal gang. AFP reports that the federal government is expected to announce a new security strategy for Tamaulipas on Tuesday. Tamaupilas, one of Mexico's most dangerous states which is criss-crossed by drug-smuggling routes to the United States, has seen an increase in violence and murders in the recent weeks, with more than 80 people killed since April 5, 2014. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Fighting Mexico's Knights Templar Cartel
Fighting Mexico's Knights Templar Cartel
Subscribe to VICE News for more updates now: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News Exactly a year ago today, February 24, 2013, in "Tierra Caliente," Michoacán, a group of farmers and businessmen in two communities organized themselves to take up arms against the Knights Templar drug cartel. Tired of the absence of the rule of law, the lack of governability, and persistent corruption, they took matters into their hands and formed what they called "autodefensa" militias in towns of Tepalcatepec and La Ruana. In January, we returned to meet the militia leaders, to find out what is happening today in the region known as the Hot Land. The goal of the self-defense movement was to do away with the extreme violence that gripped "Tierra Caliente." The Knights Templar not only had control of the production of marijuana and methamphetamine in Michoacán, they also diversified to such a point that the local communities had to pay them extortion "taxes." Kidnappings, assaults, and homicides became commonplace. The Knights Templar calls itself a "brotherhood" with its own statutes and codes. Its members use military-style uniforms modeled on the Middle Ages, and even its founding "spiritual" leader, Nazario Moreno, is venerated as a saint. Little by little, the self-defense groups have expanded into places where the Templarios are strong. In each community they enter, they build barricades and set up checkpoints at every access point. They guard towns around the clock, armed with AK-47s, AR-15s, and other weapons that they claim were decommissioned from the Knights' forces. However, some authorities have suggested that the self-defense groups are being armed by one of the Knights Templar's rival cartels, Jalisco Nueva Generación. The "autodefensa" groups deny the claims. A year after the self-defense uprising, the conflict continues. Negotiations with the government have led the militias to be folded into a little-known body within the government called the Rural Defense Forces. Yet, the principal leaders of the Knights Templar remain at large and uncertainty reigns over the Hot Land. The leadership of the self-defense militias has seen splits and ruptures, increasing the tension. MEXICO SHOOTOUT (Vigilantes clash with drug cartel in Mexico's Michoacan)
A group of masked vigilantes seized the small town of Nueva Italia in the western Mexican state of Michoacan after clashing with alleged members of a drug cartel. About 100 men, many armed with high-powered rifles, barreled into the town on Sunday (January 12) in a convoy of pickup trucks to declare the area liberated from the feared Knights Templar cartel that controls much of Michoacan. Television images show the vigilantes taking cover behind food stalls, vehicles and park benches, from exchanges of fire with alleged members of the drug cartel as a helicopter circled overhead. The video also shows an injured vigilante being helped by his colleagues. A tourniquet was placed around his profusely bleeding thigh and a voice can be heard saying: "Put a tight tourniquet on him and take him to the hospital. He'll be OK, nobody get frightened!" The vigilante group, or self-defence group, also were reported to have disarmed local policemen and taken over the town's police station. Masked groups of vigilantes took control in more than a dozen rural communities in 2013, claiming the government was failing to stop gang extortion and violence. Now, since late December, these armed groups have taken over a series of towns in Michoacan and have closed in on Apatzingan, the stronghold of the Knights Templar cartel, raising the risk of an unprecedented battle amid Mexico's drug war. Violence spiked in Michoacan in recent years and masked groups of vigilantes took power in some rural communities in 2013, claiming the government was failing to stop gang extortion and violence. Michoacan's murder rate has nearly doubled since 2006 as traffickers increasingly turned from marijuana plantations to producing methamphetamine in crude labs hidden amid the state's mountains and avocado groves.- published: 13 Jan 2014

Reported by Steven Fabian
We traveled to Juarez Mexico, currently considered the most dangerous city in the world because of it's homicide rate - averaging about 6 murders a day.
The cause of the violence? A raging war between drug cartels over Juarez's key smuggling routes into the US.
We report on the efforts the Mexican and US governments are making to combat the cartels and end the violence.
