[Breaking News] Nigeria attack Students shot dead as they slept, College of Agriculture, YOBE
The students were shot dead as they slept in their dormitory at the College of Agriculture in Yobe state. North-eastern Nigeria is under a state of emergency amid an Islamist insurgency by the Boko Haram group. Boko Haram is fighting to overthrow Nigeria's government to create an Islamic state, and has launched a number of attacks on schools. Casualty figures from the latest attack vary, but a local politician told the BBC that around 50 students had been killed. The politician said two vanloads of bodies had been taken to a hospital in Yobe's state capital, Damaturu. A witness quoted by Reuters news agency counted 40 bodies at the hospital, mostly those of young men believed to be students. College provost Molima Idi Mato, speaking to Associated Press, also said the number of dead could be as high as 50, adding that security forces were still recovering the bodies and that about 1,000 students had fled the campus. A Nigerian military source told AP that soldiers had collected 42 bodies. The gunmen also set fire to classrooms, a military spokesman in Yobe state, Lazarus Eli, told Agence France-Presse. The college is in the rural Gujba district. In May, President Goodluck Jonathan ordered an operation against Boko Haram, and a state of emergency was declared for the north-east on 14 May. Many of the Islamist militants left their bases in the north-east and violence initially fell, but revenge attacks quickly followed. In June, Boko Haram carried out two attacks on schools in the region. At least nine children were killed in a school on the outskirts of Maiduguri, while 13 students and teachers were killed in a school in Damaturu. In July in the village of Mamudo in Yobe state, Islamist militants attacked a school's dormitories with guns and explosives, killing at least 42 people, mostly students. Boko Haram regards schools as a symbol of Western culture. The group's name translates as "Western education is forbidden". Boko Haram is led by Abubakar Shekau. The Nigerian military said in August that it might have killed him in a shoot-out. However, a video released last week purportedly showed him alive. Other previous reports of his death later proved to be unfounded. Read More: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-24322683- published: 30 Sep 2013

Women In Niger Arrested For Baby Trafficking.
Women In Niger Arrested For Baby Trafficking.
The wives of two prominent officials have been arrested in Niger following the dismantling of an alleged baby-trafficking ring this week, according to a police source. More than 20 suspects were arrested on Monday as part of an international investigation involving police from Nigeria, Benin and Niger, the source told the AFP news agency. Those arrested were "mostly women" and included one of the wives of Niger's former prime minister and current parliament speaker Hama Amadou, who is seen as the main challenger to President Mahamadou Issoufou in elections due in 2016. The wife of Abdou Labo, the agriculture minister, was also detained. The babies trafficked are thought to have arrived in Niger from Nigeria via Benin. "The trafficking network is used primarily by couples who are unable to have children," a source close to the case told AFP. A number of civil servants and health workers were also detained. Some suspects were referred to the public prosecutor on Wednesday, the police source said. "Baby factories" - private clinics where young girls sell their newborns to couples who are unable to conceive - are regularly dismantled in Nigeria. Cases in which mothers give up babies born from rape have been reported at such clinics, but young women facing unwanted pregnancies are more common, according to the Nigerian authorities. The newborns are sold for several thousand dollars, with boys fetching more than girls. The mothers receive around $200. Human trafficking is the third most common crime in Nigeria, behind fraud and drug trafficking, according to the UN.- published: 25 Jun 2014

Nigerian Govt 'In Contact With Boko Haram'
Nigerian Govt 'In Contact With Boko Haram'
Nigerian authorities have made indirect contact with the Islamist group behind the abduction of more than 250 schoolgirls. Intelligence sources also told Sky News that Nigeria's neighbours - Chad, Cameroon and Niger - are providing satellite imagery to help find the teenagers. More than 300 youngsters were kidnapped from a boarding school in Chibok in the northern Borno state on April 14. It is thought 53 managed to escape, but 273 are still missing. Security experts from the UK, US and France are assisting Nigerian authorities in the rescue operation. But Sky News sources have learned the militants are likely to have laid booby traps and landmines to stop the girls being found. Boko Haram has reportedly blown up two key transit bridges near the borders Search efforts have been further hampered by reports that two important bridges near the borders with Chad and Cameroon have been destroyed by militants in the last week, hindering rescue teams. The rescue operation has been focused on the vast Sambisa forest near where the girls were abducted. However there are also reports that some have been trafficked across Nigeria's borders. They are believed to have been split into four different groups. Boko Haram's leader Abubakar Shekau claimed responsibility for the school raid in a video earlier this week. He threatened to sell the girls, who he described as slaves, "on the market." Abubakar Shekau has threatened to sell the girls 'on the market' The militant group has also admitted carrying out a bomb attack in the capital Abuja on the same day as the abduction. The Nigerian military has had tip-offs that the group could now be planning another attack on a nearby market. The government has faced fierce criticism over its failure to contain the Islamist group's five-year insurgency, which has left thousands dead. However the brazenness of April's mass abduction has particularly shocked the international community and triggered a major social media campaign. Pope Francis is among the latest high-profile figures to take part. He tweeted: "Let us all join in prayer for the immediate release of the schoolgirls kidnapped in Nigeria #BringBackOurGirls."- published: 11 May 2014

Suspected Islamists kill 90 in Nigeria village raid: witnesses For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to http://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS Suspected Islamist fighters killed at least 90 people in an early morning attack on a village in remote northeast Nigeria on Sunday, witnesses said. The Boko Haram gunmen surrounded the village of Izge, near the border with Cameroon, spraying it with bullets, setting off explosions and burning down dozens of houses, they said. "As I am talking to you now, all the dead bodies of the victims are still lying in the streets," resident Abubakar Usman told Reuters by telephone. "We fled without burying them, fearing the terrorists were still lurking in the bushes." Borno state Police Commissioner Lawal Tanko confirmed the attack but said he had no details of casualties. Another witness, Lawan Madu, said hundreds of residents had fled. President Goodluck Jonathan ordered extra troops into northeast Nigeria in May to try to crush the insurgents, who want to carve a breakaway Islamic state out of largely Muslim northern Nigeria, where they have killed thousands of people. But the Islamists simply retreated into the remote, hilly Gwoza area bordering Cameroon, from where they have continued to mount deadly attacks that increasingly target civilians. Jonathan faces an election in a year's time, and the persistence of Boko Haram's 4-1/2-year-old insurgency despite an costly military operation against it remains a major headache. Last week, Boko Haram fighters in trucks painted in military colors killed 51 people in an attack on the Konduga local government area.
