The Normans (in French: Normands) were the people who gave their name to Normandy, a region in northern France. They were descended from Norse Viking conquerors of the territory and the native population of Frankish and Gallo-Roman stock. Their identity emerged initially in the first half of the 10th century, and gradually evolved over succeeding centuries.
They played a major political, military, and cultural role in medieval Europe and even the Near East. They were famed for their martial spirit and eventually for their Christian piety. They quickly adopted the Romance language of the land they settled, their dialect becoming known as Norman or Norman-French, an important literary language. The Duchy of Normandy, which they formed by treaty with the French crown, was one of the great fiefs of medieval France. The Normans are famed both for their culture, such as their unique Romanesque architecture, and their musical traditions, as well as for their military accomplishments and innovations. Norman adventurers established a kingdom in Sicily and southern Italy by conquest, and a Norman expedition on behalf of their duke, William the Conqueror, led to the Norman Conquest of England. Norman influence spread from these new centres to the Crusader States in the Near East, to Scotland and Wales in Great Britain, and to Ireland.
Jon Brion (born December 11, 1963) is an American rock and pop multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, composer and record producer.
Brion was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. He came from a musical family; his mother, LaRue, was an administrative assistant and singer, and his father, Keith Brion, was a band director at Yale. His brother and sister became a composer/arranger and a violinist, respectively. Brion had difficulties at Hamden High School and at the age of 17 left education, opting instead to play music professionally. From 1980-85 Jon was part of the band The Excerpts, along with Stephen Harris, Dean Falcone, Jim Balga, Bobby Butcher & Spike Priggen.
In the early 1980s, Brion and musician/producer Bill Murphy began a writing collaboration in New Haven, Connecticut. They eventually enlisted bassist Don "Riff" Fertman and together formed The Bats, (not to be confused with the New Zealand group of the same name). The Bats released a single, "Popgun" and one album How Pop Can You Get?, on Gustav records in 1982. The recordings had much critical acclaim, but little commercial success, and the trio eventually disbanded.
Murray Irwin "Moe" Norman (July 10, 1929 – September 4, 2004) was a Canadian professional golfer. His accuracy, his ability to hit shot after shot perfectly straight, gave him the nickname "pipeline moe".
Born in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, Norman developed his golf from childhood at the Rockway municipal course in that city, starting as a caddy in his pre-teen years. He refined his skills competing against talented area players such as Gary Cowan and Gerry Kesselring. He won back-to-back Canadian Amateur Championships in 1955 and 1956. He turned professional in 1957 and played briefly in the PGA Tour, but due to shyness, bullying he encountered from certain pros, and a preference to stay in Canada, he stayed primarily in Ontario rather than travel extensively outside Canada.
Norman's play, along with his way of dressing, were both described as unconventional. He devised what is known as "The Norman Swing" —- rigid arms extended far from his body, a very wide stance with minimal knee bend, shorter-than-usual backswing and extended follow-through with minimal hand action, which produced amazingly accurate ball placement. He played extremely fast, sometimes not slowing to line up his putts. He was inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame in 1995. He was self-taught and never took a golf lesson.
Oliver Taylor Hawkins (born February 17, 1972 in Fort Worth, Texas) is an American musician, best known as the drummer of the rock band Foo Fighters. Prior to joining the band in 1997, he was the touring drummer for Alanis Morissette on her Jagged Little Pill and Can't Not tours, as well as the drummer in the progressive experimental band called Sylvia which, after changing their name to Anyone, went on to sign with Roadrunner Records. His cousin, Kevin Harrell, introduced him to Dave Grohl after camping with him for several weeks in the Ozarks. Hawkins would eventually become the drummer for Grohl's band, Foo Fighters. He was voted "Best Rock Drummer" in 2005 by the UK drumming magazine, Rhythm.
In 2004, Hawkins formed his own side project, Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders, in which he plays drums and sings.
After leaving the Orange County-based band Sylvia (later emerging as ANYONE), he joined up as drummer for Sass Jordan, which in turn he left to act as drummer for Alanis Morissette. He has appeared in Morissette's videos for "You Oughta Know" and "You Learn".
If you're looking for some answers
Well you've come to the wrong place
You might find lines, but no valentines
Written all over my face
I bear no grudge, I wear no frown
I just come with calloused hands
And I don't mean to bring you down but
There is no romance.
I've spent too much of my life waiting
Hoping, dreaming, wishing, believing,
And way too little of it living
Smashing it up and taking and giving
I wish someone had warned me
While I was still a young man
And saved me lots of time and money
There is no romance.
No romance, no romance, no romance, no romance
No romance, no romance, no romance, no romance
Save your stories for the bartender
And your crying for the theater
And your poems and your diary pages
To kill some time in your old age.
Uh huh huh, uh huh huh, uh huh huh, uh huh huh
Uh huh huh, uh huh huh, uh huh huh, uh huh huh
There may be gods who hear your prayers
And honest men who, men who care
And young lovers who say they will wait forever
Lives that look like movies and books
But the sooner that you learn this
The sooner you free your hands
To get on with things that really matter
There is no romance.
Uh huh huh, uh huh huh, uh huh huh, uh huh huh
Help me, help me, tell me what is wrong
Is this feeling common or am I the only one
Help me, help me, whenever I go out
To dance and to enjoy myself they think I need a guy
First this boy turned up, didn't say a word
He just sat and stared, oh did he get on my nerves
Then a fellow came, such a gorgeous guy
With an empty brain, so I told him with a smile
Nice to see you, take a hike
There is No Romance when you ask me for my number... a.s.o.
Just a one-night stand, I don't need it now
There is No Romance
Where's the gentleman I wonder
I just wanna dance, I intend to stay alone
Even when I'm walking home
When my, when my friends get up and dance
That is when the drunk obnoxious guys take a chance
help me, help me, I'm looking for a guy
Who knows how to treat, how to treat me right
First this man turned up with a nasty smell
And the second guy, what he was I couldn't tell
Then a boy turned up with a dirty mind
And another one smelled of yesterday's wine
How I hate the smell of it
There is No Romance when you ask me for my number... a.s.o.
Rudolph Valentino and all those other stars
They're the kind of men that I can't resist
Tell me do those men really not exist
Help me, help me, tell me where's the passion
Oh, is it all old-fashioned
Have you heard about the baby, born at the wrong place;
Have you heard about the baby, born at the wrong time;
The baby was born, it's mummy died;
No daddy around, the baby cried;
Nobody's child you'll never got a chance;
That's true, - No Romance !
They never got a chance ! They never got a chance ! They never got a chance !
They never got a chance ! They never got a chance ! They never got a chance !
Have you heard about the boy, who's living in a trashcan;
He's eight years old but strong as man;
He never felt love, he never was a child,
The only thing he knows is how to get wild;
Shot by a cop, he never had a chance;
That's true, - No Romance !
They never got a chance ! They never got a chance ! They never got a chance !
They never got a chance ! They never got a chance ! They never got a chance !
They never got a chance ! They never got a chance ! They never got a chance !
They never got a chance ! They never got a chance ! They never got a chance !
Have you heard about the girl, standing by the red light;
You can buy her body, she will hold you tight;
She needs the money, she hates the street,
She got some dope, but nothing to eat;
The dope was bad, she never got a chance;
That's true, - No Romance !
They never got a chance ! They never got a chance ! They never got a chance !
They never got a chance ! They never got a chance ! They never got a chance !
( Killed by Society ! )
They never got a chance ! They never got a chance ! They never got a chance !
They never got a chance ! They never got a chance ! They never got a chance !
( No Romance ! )
They never got a chance ! They never got a chance ! They never got a chance !
