A City Left in Ruins: The Battle for Aleppo
Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News Until the civil war reached it two years ago, Aleppo was Syria's largest city and the country's commercial and industrial hub. Now the ancient city lies in ruins, 70 percent of its population has fled, and those who remain live under siege. Rebel-held areas are under constant bombardment by barrel bombs — crudely improvised explosive devices that are dropped from government aircraft. As rebel and government forces struggle for total victory, VICE filmmaker Medyan Dairieh followed the volunteers of Aleppo's Civil Defense, a civilian rescue organization, who risk their lives daily as the first responders to government airstrikes in a city seemingly abandoned by the outside world. Al-Nusra Front And Other Rebel Groups Attacks Aleppo Central Prison | Syrian Civil War
An alliance of Syrian rebels including Al-Nusra Front, Ahrar Al-Sham, Army of the Muhajireen announced the battle to attack the Aleppo Central Prison in Syria. Syrian rebels claimed to have seized part of a major prison facility outside the country's commercial capital of Aleppo and freed some prisoners amid intense clashes. The Syrian sources cite otherwise and have shown that they are still in full control of the prison. A source inside the prison told As-Safir that the attack on the prison was the heaviest so far but that the prison didn't fall. The source said that the prison was attacked from three sides. It began when a truck laden with more than 20 tons of explosives and driven by a suicide bomber who tried to approach the prison. Prison security men saw the truck coming and hit it with RPG rounds. The truck exploded about a hundred meters from the prison's door. "The intensity of the blast destroyed the headquarters of the prison protection unit, killing two officers and wounding 10 unit members," the source said. The source added, "After the truck explosion, there was a violent attack by three tanks that targeted the first and second prison towers with about 15 shells, killing five prisoners and injuring 10. In conjunction with the tank attack, attackers opened fire with heavy machine guns at the prison from six different points, leading to severe damage to the prison building." After about two hours from the start of battle, which began at about 10 a.m., gunmen managed to get close to the prison entrance, where violent clashes took place. The source explained, "Afterward, warplanes intervened and targeted the rear lines of the attackers while prison security elements repelled the attack from the inside, which put the [attackers] in a pincer, where violent clashes took place and lasted till 4 p.m. Afterward, the attackers pulled back from all axes and the attack stopped." Various outlets including the video show the the killing of Saifullah al-Chichani, who led the unit that stormed the prison. The number of dead and wounded among the attackers is not yet accurately known because the attackers failed to declare the full results of the attack. Another leader in the Aleppo prison battle was Muslim al-Chichani, the emir of Junud al-Sham, which consists entirely of Chechens and is based in the north Latakia countryside. Muslim al-Chichani is considered one of the most prominent military minds among the leaders of the Islamist brigades and factions due to his previous experience in both Afghanistan and the Caucasus. Saifullah al-Chichani, whose real name is Rislan Mashalikashvili, fought in Chechnya, where he was injured. He left Chechnya for treatment but could not return. He thought of going to Iraq but didn't find a way to do that. So he went to Afghanistan in 2005, where he fought US forces and stayed in the Kabylie region for a while. When the Syrian crisis started, he decided to go to Syria and contribute to the establishment of an Islamic caliphate. In Syria, he led the Army of the Caliphate, which consisted of about 500 Chechen fighters. At the end of 2013, Saifullah pledged allegiance to Jabhat al-Nusra and declared that he and all his fighters and weapons were joining. He participated in many battles in Syria, the most important of which was the battle to control the Aleppo neighborhood of Sheikh Said and the battle of al-Kindi hospital. It is noteworthy that Saifullah was a close friend of Dokka Umarov, the emir of the Caucasus emirate. Heavy Clashes During The Battle For Al-Ramouseh Aleppo | Syria War 2014
Syria War 2014 | Syrian Civil War Heavy clashes erupted as various brigades attacked Al-Ramouseh district in Aleppo. The fighters managed to capture the district from the Syrian Army after fierce clashes went on for a couple days. Al-Ramouseh is a industrial district it has many different factories which were being used by the Syrian Army as strategic bastions. The fighters also managed to capture the Sadkop Fuel Depots, social media activists also claimed that the leader of Jaish Al-Mujahideen has been killed in the offensive on Al-Ramouseh. Al-Ramouseh is strategically important because it holds the main supply road to the Syrian Army in Western Aleppo. The Syrian Army claims to have full control of the main road while opposition fighters claim that they control it. The district is known for the Aleppo Artillery School massacre which occurred on June 16, 1979. An officer on duty, Ibrahim el-Youssef, and members of the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood calling themselves the Fighting Vanguard (Attali'a el-Moukatillah) and led by Adnan Uqla, massacred between 50 and 83 Alawi cadets in the Aleppo Artillery School. The incident marked the beginning of full scale urban warfare of the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood against that ruling Alawite government. Map of location: http://bit.ly/1iAe25o- published: 19 Apr 2014

New Aleppo
Thousands of ethnic Armenians caught in the middle of Syria's civil war have been forced to abandon their homes in Aleppo and elsewhere in the war-torn country and move towards their historical homeland, Armenia, in search of peace for themselves and their families. Facing social problems in Armenia, many of them also have to cope with the feeling of nostalgia for their lost homes as they also see a glimpse of hope in a new district rising in a town not far from Yerevan. This district will be named New Aleppo.- published: 30 Jun 2014

FSA In Heavy Clashes As The Syrian Army Still Advances Towards Aleppo
France and Saudi Arabia have agreed to give more weapons to the militants operating in Syria. French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Monday, "Our approach to the situation is identical." He made the comment after holding talks with Saudi officials in the city of Jeddah. The French defense minister said Paris and Riyadh will support the so-called Syrian National Coalition and the Free Syrian Army "on the military level, as well as the humanitarian and political levels." Syrian military forces have reopened a key road linking the central heartland with the embattled northern province of Aleppo, following heavy clashes with militants. They took control of the road on Sunday night after engaging in a fierce battle with the militants. The route had been closed since August because of heavy fighting in the area. The development comes a week after army troops captured the strategic town of Khanaser near the road and flushed out insurgents in several surrounding villages. The Syrian army has made advances near the flashpoint city of Aleppo in the north of the country. On Tuesday, fierce fighting continued between militants and the Syrian soldiers in the region. The Syrian army also secured five villages in the south of the city. The Syrian soldiers' achievement led to the transfer of the first shipment of food and aid to Aleppo. "The clashes are still ongoing... Despite all the difficulties, we are pressing day and night until we meet our objectives," said a Syrian soldier.- published: 09 Oct 2013

Heavy Clashes At The Palace of Justice In Aleppo |Syrian Civil War
--Subscribe for more: http://bit.ly/Nnic4n-- Heavy Clashes At The Palace of Justice Aleppo during Syrian Civil War 2014. Aleppo's Castle, the Palace of Justice is used by the Syrian Arab Army as baracks and to launch attacks on rebel hold positions according to rebel sources. The fighting in this area has never stopped but takes short breaks until one side starts the attack again. The area has seen alot of devistation especially because it holds the Citidal of Aleppo which is a large medieval fortified palace in the centre of the old city of Aleppo. It is considered to be one of the oldest and largest castles in the world. Usage of the Citadel hill dates back at least to the middle of the 3rd millennium BC. Subsequently occupied by many civilizations including the Greeks, Byzantines, Ayyubids and Mamluks, the majority of the construction as it stands today is thought to originate from the Ayyubid period. An extensive conservation work has taken place in the 2000s by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in collaboration with Aleppo Archeological Society. Dominating the city, the Citadel is part of the Ancient City of Aleppo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. A few days ago the citadel was blown up by a massive IED attack held out by members of the islamic front. Map: http://bit.ly/1gsxvBq- published: 23 Feb 2014
