Feathers are one of the epidermal growths that form the distinctive outer covering, or plumage, on birds and some non-avian theropod dinosaurs. They are considered the most complex integumentary structures found in vertebrates, and indeed a premier example of a complex evolutionary novelty. They are among the characteristics that distinguish the extant Aves from other living groups. Feathers have also been noticed in those Theropoda which have been termed feathered dinosaurs. Although feathers cover most parts of the body of birds, they arise only from certain well-defined tracts on the skin. They aid in flight, thermal insulation, waterproofing and coloration that helps in communication and protection.
Feathers are among the most complex integumentary appendages found in vertebrates and are formed in tiny follicles in the epidermis, or outer skin layer, that produce keratin proteins. The β-keratins in feathers, beaks and claws — and the claws, scales and shells of reptiles — are composed of protein strands hydrogen-bonded into β-pleated sheets, which are then further twisted and crosslinked by disulfide bridges into structures even tougher than the α-keratins of mammalian hair, horns and hoof. The exact signals that induce the growth of feathers on the skin are not known but it has been found that the transcription factor cDermo-1 induces the growth of feathers on skin and scales on the leg.
Carl Zimmer (born 1966) is a popular science writer and blogger, especially regarding the study of evolution and parasites. He has written several books and contributes science essays to publications such as The New York Times and Discover. He is a Fellow at Yale University's Morse College.
Besides his popular science writing, Zimmer also gives frequent lectures, and has appeared on many radio shows, including National Public Radio's "Radiolab", Fresh Air and This American Life. His most recent award was a 2007 prize for science communication from the United States National Academy of Sciences, for his wide-ranging coverage of biology and evolution in newspapers, magazines and his blog, "The Loom". Since 11 November 2009 (episode 35) he has been host of the periodic audio podcast Meet the Scientist of the American Society for Microbiology (replacing Merry Buckley).
Zimmer received his B.A. in English from Yale University in 1987, and began freelance writing for Natural History magazine. In 1989, Zimmer started at Discover magazine, first as a copy editor and fact checker, eventually becoming a contributing editor.
Charles Arthur "Charlie" Feathers (June 12, 1932 – August 29, 1998) was an influential American rockabilly and country music performer.
Feathers was born in Holly Springs, Mississippi, and recorded a string of popular singles like "Peepin' Eyes," "Defrost Your Heart," "Tongue-Tied Jill," and "Bottle to the Baby" on Sun Records, Meteor and King Records in the 1950s.
Feathers was known for being a master of shifting emotional and sonic dynamics in his songs. His theatrical, hiccup-styled, energetic, rockabilly vocal style inspired a later generation of rock vocalists, including Lux Interior of The Cramps.
He studied and recorded several songs with Junior Kimbrough, whom he called "the beginning and end of all music". His childhood influences were reflected in his later music of the 1970s and 1980s, which had an easy-paced, sometimes sinister, country-blues tempo, as opposed to the frenetic fast-paced style favored by some of his rockabilly colleagues of the 1950s.
He started out as a session musician at Sun Studios, playing any side instrument he could in the hopes of someday making his own music there. He eventually played on a small label started by Sam Phillips called Flip records which got him enough attention to record a couple singles for Sun Records and Holiday Inn Records. By all accounts the singer was not held in much regard by Phillips, but Feathers often made the audacious claim that he had arranged "That's All Right" and "Blue Moon of Kentucky" for Elvis Presley and recorded "Good Rockin' Tonight" months before Presley. He also claimed that his "We're Getting Closer (To Being Apart)" had been intended to be Elvis' sixth single for Sun. He did, however, get his name on one of Elvis' Sun records, "I Forgot To Remember To Forget" when the writer Stan Kesler asked him to record a demo of the song.
History’s made its mark in anger.
As everybody knows, it's what we do,
It's nothing new.
The next chords struck are fault and failure
And we both know that finger points on cue,
There’s blame for two.
Do you really want him calling, Newo?
Do you really think he’s coming back to you?
Oh, once the world stops spinning, read that writing on the wall.
Is there another, Newo?
Is there cushion just enough to break the fall.
Oh, don’t you cry.
Just lie there baby in the past, ‘cause if you want it all
Right now, hide your feathers on the back porch, baby.
He’s coming home for... you've... been... such... a liar.
Hide your feathers, little back porch lady.
You’re too old enough to cry your sorry eyes out over the world.
Hear me scream outside your window.
I'm only here to make my peace with you.
There's something new.
Oh, it was our time, that day in our lives.
If I could do things different what would I choose?
Oh, don't you cry, Mama.
Please, don't cry Mama.
Oh, don't you cry, no, no.
Right now, hide your feathers, on the back porch, baby.
He’s coming home for... you've... been... such... a liar.
Hide your feathers, little back porch lady.
You’re too old enough to cry your sorry eyes out...
No other, could wait for a lover,
To embrace, boy.
When there's no more room for love,
You’ll sell her off to the sharks.
[x2]
Right now, hide your feathers on the back porch, baby.
He’s coming home for... you've... been... such... a liar.
Right now, hide your feathers on the back porch, baby.
He’s coming home for... you've... been... such... a liar.
(Over the world)
Hide your feathers, little back porch lady.
You’re too old enough to cry your sorry eyes out...
Wait a minute, little back porch lady.
Wait a minute, little back porch lady.
I'm in love.
Wait a minute, little back porch lady. (Such a liar.)
Oh, don't you cry, Mama.
Oh, don't you cry, no, no.
Wait a minute, little back porch lady.
Wait a minute, little back porch lady.
I'm in love.
Wait a minute, little back porch lady. (Such a liar.)
Oh, don't you cry, Mama.
We are all as light as feathers,
Blowing in the weather,
Looking for a place to float.
Could hide away forever,
But it is now or never.
Take a chance; untie the boat.
See the stormy weather.
Feel the change in pressure.
Watch the seasons come and go.
Freedom is a treasure
That I just cant measure.
Feathered failures on my knees
I broke my back from missing thee
I turned to brittle barren worlds
I hear you’re living with the girl
Sara Sara eyes of blue
Sara Sara in love you
She knows you had a woman fine
With eyes as deep as brandy wine
Flora flora, flora flora , flora flora,
Flora flora, flora flora, flora
Flora, flora, la da dum
Flora flora you knew her then
You plucked her from her fields of men
And all at once it came to me
Under my favorite lonesome tree
Sara Sara eyes of blue
Sara Sara in love with you
She knows you had a woman fine
With eyes as deep as brandy wine
Flora flora, flora flora , flora flora,
Flora flora, flora flora, flora
Flora, flora, la da dum
Feathered failures on my knees
I broke my back from missing thee
I turned to brittle barren worlds
I hear you’re living with girl
Sara Sara eyes so blue
Sara Sara in love with you
She knows I was your woman fine
Rain made a place
For us to swim, to play
Inopportune devotion cannot be sound
So I take my lot of a few feathers from the sky
Into a ritual and let my spirit fly
Wake up, is this a dream of a dream of a dream?
Simple pleasures
Falling feathers
Skating on this machine
Alone between my trip and me.
What is real today?
Until the dawn, away
Rain soft aura potion condemns me now
So I take my lot of a few feathers from the sky
Into a ritual and let my spirit fly
Simple pleasures
Falling feathers
Skating on this machine
Alone between my trip and me.
The price of all this vanity is getting way too high
The maintenance of my sanity is taking too much time
Simple feathers
Falling feathers
Wherever you're going
I know you knew
That nobody cuts me
Quite like you do
And i'm gonna crawl
Not that it matters
Nobody bleeds the way I do
Wherever you've gone
I can follow
The path of destruction
You leave like crumbs
And i'm gonna crawl
I'm gonna scratch and claw
Though i am broken, i still bleed
Whoever said?
No wind, no rain, no conversation
Will bring me back alive
I got it bad and i won't sleep
Until i breathe the sweet perfume
You love
You're gonna crawl, my precious
I'm untethered
Waving in the wind like feathers
Feel you near me, disappearing
If you take, you better kill me
Break me, steal me
If you don't kill me
I'm gonna crawl, til you crawl
Crawl like them all, my precious
I'm untethered
Waving in the wind like feathers-
Crawl, my love
she feels like a stranger has come in the night and stolen her life and left her with this and boughs break on ebony toothaches
she is a flask trapped inside a fall
i know you need to find what you thought you left behind in a past life
i won't question why the only light that you have you give away
i know you need to find what you thought you left behind in a past life
i won't question why the only light that you have you give away
she feels like a stranger has come in the night and stolen her life and left her with this
Wherever you're going

[yoshimi]
Hello, it's yoshimi
Ahoo yoo yoo(?)
Hello
Hello
Listen to me
[thurston]
I've been told
Camels are gold
Why should i care
If you're so near
Fun and games
So practic insane(?)
Alone with you
I'd be beriefed(?)
Back and forth
Lavish your horse(?)
Camel is light
Golden horse(?)
Fun is you
When you're around
Around my heart
Feeling aground(?)
And i've been told
Camels are gold
Why should i care
If you're so near
Fun and games
So practic insane(?)
Alone with you
Winds that are crashing and clouds that are turning
A premonition of sails that were burning
Woke up in silence and looked out my window
Its weathers like these turn women to widows
Drawn by another into each other
Lie in the heathers woven to covers
Sleep like a deadwieght fragile as feathers
Welcome the weights that will you back to me
Call on the ravens and send them out to sea
Feathers of stray birds that lead you the way home
Its weathers that turn women to widows
Drawn by another into each other
Lie in the heathers woven to covers
Sleep like a deadwieght fragile as feathers
Drawn by another into each other
Lie in the heathers woven to covers
Sleep like a deadwieght fragile as feathers
Drawn by another into each other
Lie in the heathers woven to covers
Barefoot people in a row
They're dancing
And I'm so alone
Look at the feathers
Dancing always made me sick
Because I'm no good at it
Where is the tar?
Right here
I'm not like Robinson
He was like a small war
And I'm not used to doing
Things like these tonight
Lonely cowboy without a cow
I guess that he must be just a boy
He has a ride
That's right
Dancing always made me sick
Because I'm no good at it
Get on the dance floor
I won't
I'm not like Robinson
He was like a small war
And I'm not used to doing
Take the time to count the cracks and lines in the four walls
The cell that follows you wherever you go and the black swans
Now the only chance is here and the motorway looks clear
The cells are ticking and the spine is ready to kick in
All wrapped up and tied up little demons sing us what we don't know
With the industry in place we can hold out for a while
It is the singer in the river is the siren on the rock
Before the time you wake up feeling nothing at all
It is the singer in the river is the siren on the rock
Before the time you're washed up feeling nothing at all
They're covered in feathers and they look so good in the sunlight
It's only the sawdust trickling from their sleeves that you'll notice
With the industry in place we can look the other way
It is the singer in the river is the siren on the rock
Before the time you wake up feeling nothing at all
It is the singer in the river is the siren on the rock
Before the time you're washed up feeling nothing at all
It is the singer in the river is the siren on the rock
Before the time you wake up feeling nothing at all
It is the singer in the river is the siren on the rock
Before the time you're washed up feeling nothing at all
It is the singer in the river is the siren on the rock
Before the time you wake up feeling nothing at all
It is the singer in the river is the siren on the rock
