Profondo Rosso (also known as Deep Red or The Hatchet Murders) is a 1975 giallo film directed and written by Dario Argento and co-written by Bernardino Zapponi. It was released on March 7, 1975 in Italy and June 11, 1976 in the United States. The film's score was composed and performed by Goblin. It stars David Hemmings as a music teacher who investigates a series of murders performed by a mysterious figure wielding a hatchet. Although the film was not a financial success internationally, the film has met with critical acclaim.
Profondo Rosso follows music teacher Marcus Daly (Hemmings) as he investigates the violent murder of psychic medium Helga Ulmann (Macha Meril), which he witnesses in an apartment building. Other major characters are introduced early, including Daly’s gay friend Carlo (Gabriele Lavia), Ulmann’s associate Dr. Giordani (Glauco Mauri) and reporter Gianna Brezzi (Daria Nicolodi), with whom Daly begins an affair.
After his attempt to rescue the medium fails, Daly realizes he has seen a certain painting among a group of portraits on the wall of the victim’s apartment but it seems disappeared when the police arrive. Later in the film, he also initially overlooks another clue that causes him to discover a mouldering corpse walled up in a derelict house. One murder leads to a series of others as Daly’s obsession with this vital clue that he fails to understand endangers his life and that of everyone with whom he comes into contact. Among those killed are Giordani, Amanda Righetti (Giuliana Calandra), and Carlo.
Rosso is the major city of south-western Mauritania and capital of Trarza region. It is situated on the Senegal River at the head of year-round navigation. The town is 204 km south of the capital Nouakchott. The Arabic name is Al-Quwarib.
Rosso was once the capital of the Emirate of Trarza, a Precolonial Sahrawi dominated state.
Under French colonial rule Senegal and Mauritania were administered as a single entity. When independence came, the new frontier was drawn along the Senegal River, thus splitting the small town of Rosso in two. This article refers to Mauritanian Rosso, on the northern bank of the river.
Originally a staging-post for the gum arabic trade, Rosso has grown rapidly since independence. From a population of a mere 2 300 in 1960 it has now overtaken Kaédi to become the 3rd largest city in the country with 48 922 inhabitants (2000 census).
South-western Mauritania is predominantly a Wolof -speaking area but many members of Mauritania's other ethnic groups have moved to the town to escape the severe problems of desertification further north.

Gianna: I think that a woman's gotta be independent so she can...::Marc: Oh, don't start with me about all that woman's stuff. It is a fundamental fact... men are different from women. Forming fantasies of hate
with pure demise
cause in her eyes
there’s no disguise
an open gate
Although the mirror bears the sign
truth passes by
unseen for days
the victim prays
Kept inside for all those years
the strangled dreams she dreamt
the unflown tears
suppressing fears
bringing death to mortal life
the soul to please
to reach release
Stabbing knife and smashing head
boiling face and eyes of dead
while the blood is running red
Breeding thoughts and stunning greed
licking wounds until they bleed
all those needs to feed
Life is hasting towards death
all that is left
is just a bitter taste of all the waste
You can’t change the speed of time
You cannot change the speed of time
Stabbing knife and smashing head
boiling face and eyes of dead
while the blood is running red
Breeding thoughts and stunning greed
licking wounds until they bleed
