Japan have surpassed expectations so far in the World Cup. With two victories in three matches, they finished as runners-up behind Holland in Group E, sparking celebrations in Japan as a nation began to re-evaluate their World Cup hopes.

神戸の現役ＦＷ小川慶治朗も「さすがだなと思います」と、大先輩のプレーに感嘆だった。
一方のＪＡＰＡＮ ＳＴＡＲＳも岡田武史監督が年齢と同じ背番号「５８」で途中出場し、さらに人気サッカー漫画「キャプテン翼」の作者・高橋陽一さんが特別メンバーとしてピッチに立つなど、阪神・淡路大震災から２０年のチャリティー・イベントに貢献した。

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has tipped off Japan coach Takeshi Okada that he expects Cameroon to take advantage of their size when the teams meet in the 2010 South Africa World Cup.
Okada asked for Wenger's opinion on whether the Indomitable Lions would alter their tactics to combat the Japanese.

Takeshi Okada
Takeshi Okada (岡田 武史, Okada Takeshi, born 25 August 1956 in Osaka, Japan) is a former football player that was head coach of the Japanese national football team between 2007 and 2010.
International career
Okada played 24 games and scored one goal for the Japan national football team between 1980 and 1985.
Coaching career
He coached Japan at the 1998 FIFA World Cup, later Consadole Sapporo (1999–2001) and Yokohama F Marinos (2003–2006).
Okada was named Japan's head coach in December 2007 to replace Ivica Osim, who suffered a stroke. He was succeeded in 2010 by Alberto Zaccheroni.
Okada gained worldwide attention for leading Japan to ninth-place finish in the FIFA World Cup 2010. He was commended for turning his Japanese team of young, inexperienced unknowns into a slick passing, talented squad of youngsters.
He signed a contract with Chinese Super League side Hangzhou Greentown on 14 December 2011. He extended his contract for two years in the end of 2012 season. However, he resigned from Hangzhou on 5 November 2013.

Greta Zimmer Friedman's son says his mother died Thursday at a hospital in Richmond, Virginia. She died from complications of old age, he said.
