Øystein Aarseth (22 March 1968 – 10 August 1993), who went by the pseudonym Euronymous, was a Norwegian guitarist and co-founder of the Norwegian black metal band Mayhem. He was also founder and owner of the extreme metal record label Deathlike Silence Productions and record shop Helvete.
Euronymous was the founder of and central figure in the early Norwegian black metal scene until his murder by fellow musician Varg Vikernes in August 1993.
Aarseth formed Mayhem in 1984 along with bassist Jørn 'Necrobutcher' Stubberud and drummer Kjetil Manheim. At the time he was going by the stage name 'Destructor' but later changed his name to Euronymous, derived from the demon Eurynomos.
In summer 1986, Euronymous, Necrobutcher and Jon 'Metalion' Kristiansen visited the German thrash metal band Assassin and recorded the Metalion in the Park demo under the name Checker Patrol, Metalion contributing background vocals to the title song Metalion in the Park.
In 1988, Per "Dead" Ohlin became Mayhem's vocalist and Jan Axel 'Hellhammer' Blomberg became its drummer. By 1991, Dead, Euronymous and Hellhammer were living in a house in the woods near Kråkstad, which was used as a place for the band to rehearse. Mayhem bassist Necrobutcher said that, after living together for a while, Dead and Euronymous "got on each other's nerves a lot" and "weren't really friends at the end". Hellhammer recalls that Dead once went outside to sleep in the woods because Euronymous was playing synth music that Dead hated. Euronymous then went outside and began shooting into the air with a shotgun.Varg Vikernes claims that Dead once stabbed Euronymous with a knife.
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is the first full-length studio album by the Norwegian black metal band Mayhem. Songwriting began in 1987, but due to the suicide of vocalist Per "Dead" Ohlin and the murder of guitarist Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth, the album's release was delayed until May 1994. De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is widely considered one of the most influential black metal albums of all time.
Mayhem began writing songs for the album in 1987, with vocalist Dead composing the lyrics. In 1990 or 1991, studio versions of the songs "The Freezing Moon" and "Carnage" were recorded, appearing on the CBR Records compilation album Projections of a Stained Mind. Mayhem's drummer, Jan Axel "Hellhammer" Blomberg, claimed that the lyrics of "Freezing Moon" were "meant to make people commit suicide". Dead said in a 1989 interview by Marduk guitarist Morgan "Evil" Håkansson, published in Slayer fanzine, that by then he had written the lyrics for "Funeral Fog", "Freezing Moon", "Buried by Time and Dust" and "Pagan Fears". Finished versions of these songs appeared on the album Live in Leipzig, a concert recording from November 1990 which was released in 1993.

But what would've happened if the tables were turned, and it was Varg who left the altercation dead? Would black metal be different? Would it be even more out-of-control? Would anything have changed at all?

It's amazing what you can find when you clear out the garage! This VHS had been sat in a box for about 20 years... It's Mayhem's 1986 show in Ski (not Lillehammer apparently) seen elsewhere on Youtube in much lower quality. The tape isn't perfect, shows signs of wear and my method of conversion is a little basic (EZ Grabber from Maplin...) but I hope it's appreciated anyway. Lee B.

MayheM's first seen ever live and recorded in 1986. They only have done covers in this show of Venom and Celtic Frost. You can also see their first vocalist who has appeared in only their demos and their first album, Messiah. Also Euronymous with his undyed blonde hair. :) They have not done a bad job in covering these songs. One of the best covers I have ever heard, even back when tabs were not out there. Euronymous was about 18 in this video. So young and innocent. Macambre (cover) - 0:00 Venom: Black Metal (cover) - 1:30 Celtic Frost: Procreation of the Wicked (cover) - 4:36 Venom: Welcome to Hell (cover) - 7:40 Euronymous' Sexy Ass (not covered ;) ) - 11:50
L.E.G.O was a side project for Euronymous & Manheim of MAYHEM. For the first time ever made available for you all to see. This is approved by Manheim. This tape is from "Follomesterskapet i Rock og Pop" in Ski Rådhusteater, Saturday the 22nd of march 1986. Ladies and Gentlemen, I hereby give you the legendary L.E.G.O. tape! Follow True_Mayhem_Collection on Instagram for pictures of rare and unique memorabilia! Manheim has provided this info for you guys:The concept of Langhus eksperimentelle gravkammerorkester (L.E.G.O.) was to celebrate absurdities and experimental concepts in music. We were huge fans of contemporary and avant garde music, and wanted to have side projects going in that direction. This particularly concert was the first concert with the L.E.G.O. project. It was partly t...

The iconic debut full-length album by the original Princes of Norwegian Darkness, Mayhem. Recorded from '92 to '93, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, or "Lord Satan's Secret Rites", was the first true release by the group, despite having formed back in 1983 by three fellow Venom fans at an AC/DC concert. The band was formed by Euronymous, bass player Necrobutcher and drummer Manheim, and was meant to be the most extreme musical group the world had ever seen or heard. Following in the footsteps of Venom, Motorhead and Celtic Frost, the group transformed speed metal into a darker, more sinister genre of music, centered around grotesque lyrics, raw sound and infamous acts of violence and radicalism. By 1987, their eagerly-awaited first work, Deathcrush, was finalized and released, selling out nearly...

The Euro-currency is coming near
I question why it's coming here
They wanna make Europe one
But who will profit, when it's done?
United cash for the rich
Social security, what about this?
Promising a bright future
While homelessness still occurs
United Europe, but for who?
