Plot
A rebellious little boy has been taken away from his abusive mother and placed in the temporary care of a young couple. And while Mario is a singular child, commendably portrayed by the pugilistic Marco Grieco, what turns Antonio Capuano's Mario's War into a fine film is not just this penetrating performance but the sensitive depiction of the new world that envelops this young boy. This film gets to the heart of the restless struggle between an adult and a child who have to adapt to each other without the bond of a biological relationship. Giulia is a special woman who gratefully and bravely embraces her new foster son. As played by the wonderful Valeria Golino (recently seen in Respiro), we recognize her unbending strength and commitment to meeting this huge challenge. Not only does she have to grapple with every obstacle Mario throws at her, but she has to cope with the doubts and hesitation of Sandro (Andrea Renzi), the man she lives with and loves... Hovering uneasily over the film is the issue of making a defiant kid fit into a system that may not suit him. Giulia and Mario are allies in a war to make sure that his individuality survives intact, but they are also occasional antagonists. Capuano's skill at balancing these competing forces is exemplary, turning Mario's War into a complex portrait of a woman and her chosen son.

I told my baby not to wake me
Not even for a cup of tea
Who could it be now?
Who could it be now?
Who could it be now?
Knocking on the Rastaman's door
I've got to get myself away
And find me a place where I'll be free
City life is getting me down
Even when I sleep I'm wearing a frown
It couldn't be the landlord
Could it be my baby?
I told her not to wake me
Not even for a cup of tea
Who could it be now?
Who could it be now?
Who could it be now?
Knocking on the Rastaman's door
Who could it be now?
Who could it be now?
Who could it be now?
Knocking on the Rastaman's door
I'm in deep meditation
Trying to find myself
Don't need no provocation
It's a minute after twelve
Now who dares to disturb
My tranquility
When I'm meditating
On the Almighty
Who could it be now?
Who could it be now?
Who could it be now?
Knocking on the Rastaman's door
I've got to get myself away
And find me a place where I'll be free
City life is getting me down
Even when I sleep I'm wearing a frown
It couldn't be the landlord
Could it be my baby?
I told her not to wake me
Rainy days are gone, sunny days are here again
When one door is closed, many more are opened
Another Rasta is born, another king is risen
Rainy days are gone, sunny days are here again
Ah, looking back, checking stock on all those days
And remembering life of me as a child
With nine mouths to feed
My mama never had it easy with my papa gone
She hardly could find a penny
She taught me all the good
And brought me up the best she could
And right now I'm ready for the world
Rainy days are gone, sunny days are here again
When one door is closed, many more are opened
Another Rasta is born, another king is risen
Rainy days are gone, sunny days are here again
I've been through thick, I've been through thin still I never give in
I learn and live, I live and learn about the Saviour within me
How many years without, that's why we never had it easy
But now my life is free, I know I got the master in me
Teaching me the golden rule, so now I sing about Jah, Jah
Rainy days are gone, sunny days are here again
When one door is closed, many more are opened
Another Rasta is born, another king is risen
Rainy days are gone, sunny days are here again
Rainy days are gone sunny days are here to stay
Ooohh perfect
Perfect love, baby my darling
As warm as the summer sun
As cool as the winter breeze
Reflection of way beyond that’s how you seem to be
Mother Queens of and kings
The patience you alone that bring
That’s how I know I really want to be mine
Am gonna hold you and cherish you
And keep you for all time
I love you respect you
Keep you satisfied
Let me take you in my arms
And protect you from the storm
I fill you with my charm
By keeping you warm
As bright as the moon at night
As sure as everything that’s right
That’s how I see creation shinning in your eyes
Constance
Where must I find a place to live
In this jungle created by mankind?
Where will I lay my weary head?
Tell me, how I'll find a peace of mind?
Some say earth a run red
Man and man must insure dem head
But I feel like running instead
And find me a place, I'll be free
I will take me over hills and that valley
Yes, I'll find me a place I'll be free
Yes, I'll take me far away from the city
Mother nature is calling me
So many year in starvation
And I can't find a thing to nyam
Sometimes I contemplate
And wonder what is wrong
Though I try so hard, I just can't get along
Man to man is unjust
And I don't know who to trust
Still I say living is a must
So I'll find me a place where I'll be free
I will take me over hills and that valley
Yes, I'll find me a place I'll be free
Yes, I'll take me far away from the city
Mother nature is calling me
Doing my best to serve mankind
To liberate the captivated mind
Still they don't seem to hear my call
So I won't linger and perish with them at all
Some say earth a run red
Man and man must insure them head
But I feel like running instead
And find me a place I'll be free
I will take me over hills and that valley
Yes, I'll find me a place I'll be free
Yes, I'll take me far away from the city

Mum you've always been there for me
Through all the ups and downs
And wears and tears
Giving me love, showing so much care, yeah
Mother I thank you for your love all these years
You've been a source of inspiration
One look in you eyes and my fears were gone
Though my papa had died and you were alone
Like the rock of Gibraltar Mama you stood strong
I say keep on doing what you're doing mama
I love you
Keep on doing what you're doing Sophie
I love you
Keep on doing what you're doing mama
Check it out
When the going got rough mum you got though
Whoever thought that you will give up
Though luck
You've proven your faith in the almighty, um-um-um
Sometimes mum, God knows you never knew
Where to find a dime to buy a pair of shoes
And I know it wasn't easy um-um-um
When the tide was high
Sometimes you break down and cry
You never, never, never give up, no way
Mama I love you
I say keep on doing what you're doing mama
I love you
Keep on doing what you're doing mama Sophie
I love you
Keep on doing what you're doing mama
Listen mama when those hands of yours get fever
And you are unable to go further
Just remember I'll be there for you
No matter what mama I'll promise I'll always be there um-um
I say keep on doing what you're doing mama
I love you
Keep on doing what you're doing mama Sophie
I love you
Keep on doing what you're doing mama
Mama, mama I love you
Never stop doing what you're doing mama
I can't believe that it's true
What man is planning to do
Trying to control the world
In the end they lose their soul
Mankind is obsessed with misconceptions, yeah
Still trying to find paradise in their disillusion
I say, life is what you make it some say
But I know that Jah has a role to play
I say, life is what you make it some say
But I know that Jah has a role to play
Some may get weary and down
'Cause they are living without
The teacher and master of all
So one by one they will fall
Until they learn to respect and honor
And work hands and heart with the creator
I say, life is what you make it some say
But I know that Jah has a role to play
Life is what you make it some say
But I know that Jah has a role to play
Life could be easier if we could learn to follow
The footsteps of the Father any way we go
Life is what you make it some say
But I know that Jah has a role to play
Life is what you make it some say
But I know that Jah has a role to play
Who makes the billows roll?
And who keeps the stars in control?
Who makes the sun shine so bright?
Who makes the ant crawl and bite?
Only He, the great one, Alpha and Omega
Is it great and sustain us in this dispensation
Life is what you make it some say
But I know that Jah has a role to play
Life is what you make it some say
But I know that Jah has a role to play
Life is what you make it
What you make it some say
How can you be so ungrateful
After all that God has done for you?
And how can you be so unruly
Knowing He controls your destiny?
In the stars and the work I see
And down the wind
He speaks with majesty and, oh
What a wonderful feeling, if only you could see
It was ordained for us to leave in peace
Not to hate each other
Living like this
Why do we fight everyday?
Not living the Father's way
How can you be so ungrateful
After all that God has done for you?
And how can you be so unruly
Knowing He controls your destiny?
Out of love and grace, He gave us
Life that we can live
But we don't appreciate love
So we live in hatred and grudge
No love, it was ordained for us to live in peace
Not to hate each other, living like this
Why do we fight everyday?
Not living the Father's way
How can you be so ungrateful
After all that God has done for you?
And how can you be so unruly
See that broken hearted man
Toiling in the burning sun
Disappointed African
Doesn't even over stand
After so many years of sweat and tears
Still he's living in fear
Wondering if and when
He's gonna have his share
Well, guess what's happening
A new day's dawning
See the black son's rising
Soon he will be free
See that poor disgruntled youth
Trying his best to know the truth
Why his ancestors have died
From those all who robbed and ruled
So many years of blood and stain
Still he's working in vain
Wondering if and when
He'll ever have his share
Well, guess what's happening
A new day's dawning
I see a new horizon
Soon he will be free
How could life be so unfair
He wonders how some get out there
Sitting in their rocking chair
While he's living in despair
After so many years of sweat and tears
Still he's living in fear
Wondering if and when
He's gonna have his share
Guess what's happening
I see a new day's dawning
I see the table is turning
Soon he will be free, yo, ho, ho
Guess what's happening
A new day's dawning
I see the table is turning
Soon he will be free, yo, ho, ho
Guess what's happening
I see the table is turning
See a new horizon
Soon he will be free
Guess what's happening
Give Praise to Rastafari
And all praises unto Jah
Give Praise to Rastafari
And all praises unto Jah
So many days, So many nights, I face this rugged life
Went thru some fire just to get a bite
My friends and my environment
Sometimes they do me wrong
But by my faith I keep holding on
For I:
Give Praise to Rastafari
And all praises unto Jah
Give Praise to Rastafari
And all praises unto Jah
The youth today are so confused they don't know what to do
They fuss and fight for what they think is right
Life for them seems so hard they don't know where to turn
With Lessons they need to learn
Give Praise to Rastafari
And all praises unto Jah
Give Praise to Rastafari
And all praises unto Jah
Okay
Okay
Hope is there for all to share
We need to live as one
Love and Care to keep us firm and strong
So for all these thoughts
I call on thee
Please listen to my song
Together this battle must be won
Give Praise to Rastafari
And all praises unto Jah
Give Praise to Rastafari
I can see my little brother's wondering
With his head in his hand
And I know he's doing a lot of thinking
With his foot in the sand
No doubt he's hoping
And wishing for a helping hand
I would stop for a while
And listen and do what I can
'Cause I don't think
I live in this suffering time
I do my best
(I do my best)
'Cause a friend in need is a friend indeed
And that's my belief, my philosophy
I say a friend in need is a friend indeed
And that's my belief my philosophy
A friend in need is a friend indeed
Not for a dime
I put my friendship on the line
Leaving behind all the wonderful time
I'll never forget
No way, where I'm coming from
If my brethren is weak I say
It's for my tho get him strong
'Cause a friend in need is a friend indeed
And that's my belief, my philosophy
I say a friend in need is a friend indeed
And that's my belief my philosophy
Sometime you are down and low
Don't have a dime, don't know where to go
And you feel like giving up
And a brethren comes along
'Cause a friend in need is a friend indeed
And that's my belief, my philosophy
I say a friend in need is a friend indeed
Got to leave town, got to get out of here
Here and now pack my bags already
Sunday morning's coming and I'm ready to go
Say goodbye to the neighborhood
Even if they could they'd never understood
You see I'm sick and tired of staying away, oh yeah
So I've made up my mind
I won't waste no more time, I won't linger behind
Got to get away, yes, I just feel like moving
On and on and on, yeah, oh well
I've been thinking about sweet river
Diving off the bridge in my woolen shorts
Contemplating how my life would be
Living like the wind that blows about the sea
Yes, I'm sick
I'm tired of staying away, oh yeah
So I've made up my mind
I won't linger behind, I won't waste no more time
Got to get away
I just feel like moving
(Moving along)
Moving along on and on
I just feel like moving on and on and on, oh girl
The spirit in me keeps telling me
By all means I must be free
Taunting me, haunting me
I got to find tranquility
Got to get away
I just feel like moving on and on and on
I just feel like moving on and on and on, yeah
Thirty, forty, forty five and fifty
I will be cruising gently on the Kings Highway
I like the vibes in my 1985
Listening reggae music on the radio
I'm leaving behind the saddest of times, oh yeah
I'm going to find a peace of mind, oh yeah
I just feel like moving on and on and on
Yes, I just feel like moving on and on and on
I just feel like moving

Imagine living in a world
Where there is no war, no, oh no
(So pure and clean)
Imagine that everyone you see
Knows what we are living for, hmm
(The great being)
Oh, what a wonderful world it would be
A world of love and peace, hmm ya
When no evil can abide only righteousness
And creed, yeah ah, yeah
And we can do it if we only believe
Yes we can do it if we only agree
It's your world and mine
(Your world and mine)
Your world and mine
(Your world and mine)
Your world and mine
(Your world and mine)
Imagine that everyone could give
As much as they'd like to get, yah, yah, yah
And imagine if everyone could learn
To show each other respect, yah, yah, yah
Oh, what a wonderful world it would be
For you and me, yeah, yeah, yeah
Then even the blind could see
And the dead man could heal, whoa, oh ya
'Cause we can do it if we only believe
We can do it if we only agree
It's your world and mine
(Your world and mine)
Your world and mine
(Your world and mine)
Your world and mine
(Your world and mine)
Your world and mine
(Your world and mine)
Yes, imagine that everyone could love most
I have the Savior
(Father up above)
And imagine if everyone could reverend
The King of king and Lord of lords
(Conquering lion)

A world of tranquility
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
Yes, what a beautiful world it would be
A world of serenity
(Yeah, yeah, yeah)
'Cause we can do it if we only believe
We can do it if we only agree

Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door

Traveling through life's long and lonely roads
In different places I lay my weary head
Knowing I got to do the right
And in wrong conditions I seek my daily bread
(oh) oh my gosh
(oh) oh what advice
(even denies) even denying my basic rights
(yeah yeah) oh jah is waiting on the higher side
With his tender arms (open wide) opened wide
This feeling
Touch my soul
This feeling
Touch my soul (believe me)
The more you live
The more you learn
And the things you learn
Will help you live and earn
And even though adversaries come around
Thats when you show your faith
Be firm and stand your ground
(oh) and oh my gosh
(oh) oh what advice
(even denies) even denying my basic rights
(yea yeah) oh jah is waiting on the higher side
With his tender arms (open wide) opened wide
This feeling
Touch my soul
This Feeling
Touch my soul
This feeling I've got.
What a feeling
This feeling I've got
Traveling through life's long and lonely lonely lonely roads
In different places
I lay my weary head
Knowing I've got to do the right
And in wrong conditions I seek my daily bread
(oh) oh my gosh
(oh) oh what advice
(even denies) even denying my basic rights
(yeah yeah) oh jah is waiting on the higher side
With his tender arms (open wide) opened wide
This feeling
Touch my soul
This feeling
Touch my soul
This feeling
Give me faith oh Jah I pray. To face another day ohhhh
Lord give me strength to face another day. Carry on life's road, carry all my load. Give me strength oh Jah to tarry on. Oh my Lord.
Oh Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end
Please hear me when I plead. All help already pass and, all help for years to come. Without who am I could not be. Many are trying to leave you outta their lives. But I wouldn't be so unwise. And so I promise to serve thee. Oh my Lord. And I beg thee some mercy.
Lord, give me strength to face another day. To journey along life's road, to carry my heavy load. Give me strength oh Jah to tarry on. Oh my Lord.
Life has become a burden, living in this evil system. Oh Jah please strengthen me. I can not make it along. I need you as my own. Oh Jah I call on thee. Some are trying to leave you out of their lives. But I wouldn't be so unwise. And so I promise to serve thee with all my all. And I beg thee some mercy.
Lord give me strength to face another day. make it along life's road, carry all my load. Give me strength to tarry on. Oh my lord.
Say, give me strength oh Jah to carry on. And do thy holy word.
Give me strength that I can make my stand. Above the sinking sand.
Many are trying to leave you outta their lives, but I wouldn't be so unwise. And so I promise to serve thee with all my all. And I'm begging thee mercy.
Lord give me strength to face another day. To make it along life's road and carry all my load.
Give me strength oh Jah to tarry on. Oh my Lord.
