The Newshour Debate: Assam burns, politicians snipe - Full Debate (4th May 2014)
A political blame game over the Assam violence erupted with BJP faulting "vote-bank" politics of Congress governments at the Centre and the state and the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference holding Narendra Modi responsible. Against the backdrop of the violence in Bodo areas that left 32 people dead since Thursday, senior Congress leader and Union Minister Kapil Sibal took a swipe at Narendra Modi, saying Modi stands for 'Model of Dividing India' and accused BJP leaders of playing the "communal card" to garner votes. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on his part asked BJP not to politicise the situation and said his track record in maintaining law and order was better than BJP-ruled Gujarat. "It is my charge that in Assam what is happening is because of the vote-bank politics of Congress," BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad alleged at a news conference in Delhi. Prasad alleged that the Congress had not taken adequate timely steps to prevent the riots after two similar episodes earlier. He also questioned Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who represents Assam in the Rajya Sabha, as to what he had done in the last 10 years to ensure effective law and order in the state which has seen repeated incidents of clashes between Bodos and immigrant Bangladeshis. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah blamed Modi, the BJP Prime Ministerial candidate, for the violence. "In Assam, 30 Muslims were murdered. Why? Because BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi made a speech there and tried to incite people against Muslims. This is a fact. This truth cannot be denied," Omar told an election rally at Tangmarg in Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency. Omar said that Modi, in his election rally in Assam three days earlier, had branded all Muslims living in that state as "Bangladeshis", which resulted in the attacks on them. "Three days earlier, he (Modi) went there and branded all Muslims as Bangladeshis and today 30 Muslims have been put to sleep in the grave," he added. Prasad attacked Sibal and Abdullah for targeting Modi over the violence and said such allegations are unfounded and baseless. On Abdullah's remarks, he said, "I think Omar Abdullah is not being taken seriously even by the people of his own state." In a debate moderated by TIMES NOW's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, panelists -- Priyanka Chaturvedi, Spokesperson, Congress; Tanvir Sadiq, National Spokesperson, National Conference; Dr Sudhanshu Trivedi, National Spokesperson, BJP & Political Advisor to Rajnath Singh; Kiren Rijiju, Leader BJP & Former MP, Arunachal Pradesh; Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya, Adviser, All Assam Student Union; Asaduddin Owaisi, President, All India Majlis e Ittihad al-Muslimin (AIMIM) and Prem Shukla, Executive Editor, Dopahar ka Saamna -- discuss whether, instead of blaming the state Govt, should BJP support action against those responsible for violence?- published: 05 May 2014

Is votebank politics the root cause of Assam violence?
On the Buck Stops here, is votebank politics the root cause? We ask this on a day when the familiar war of words between the Congress and the BJP has broken out each blaming the other for causing or inciting the violence in Assam. In all this, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has said that he will not quit since taking on Bodo militants is now his job. LIVE : 32 Muslims Killed in Assam by Bodo Militants Deadly Violence
There seems to be no end to the bloodbath in Assam as seven more bodies have been found in Baksa district, taking the total death toll to 32 in the last 36 hours. This comes after suspected Bodoland militants killed at least 23 people in a span of 24 hours in Kokrajhar and Baksa districts of lower Assam. Curfew has been clamped in all of Kokrajhar, Baksa and Chirang, three of the four districts of the Bodoland area, and on contiguous areas in neighbouring districts. The Army has carried out flag marches, and shoot-on-sight orders have been issued in Kokrajhar and Baksa. The state government has accused the Songbijit faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) of carrying out the killings. All the victims are migrant Muslims. The government has denied any connection between the attacks and the Lok Sabha elections. However, one of the three massacres has taken place in a village that saw violence and the killing of a police constable as Kokrajhar went to polls on April 24. Around 7.30 pm on Thursday, militants shot dead two women and a man of a family in Narsingpara village in the Anandabazar police station area of Baksa district. The victims were identified as Shampa Bewa (55), Sona Miya (35) and Ramisa Khatun (32). Some five hours later, between 12.30 am and 1 am on Friday, four militants armed with at least two AK series rifles opened indiscriminate fire in Balapara village in the Tulsibeel outpost area of Gossaigaon police station in Kokrajhar district. Four women, a man and three children belonging to two Muslim families were killed. Late on Friday evening, 12 bodies were recovered in the villages of Narayanguri and Khagrabari adjoining each other on the fringes of Manas National Park in Baksa district, Assam home secretary G D Tripathi said. At least 10 people were injured, and several homes were reported to be on fire, he said.
