In our second look at possible futures for Earth we examine the concept of Ecumenopolises, planet spanning cities homes to trillions. We'll examine concept in detail, starting with the first portrayals of it in fiction and extending on how Arcologies and other technologies we've discussed on the channel might be employed to create a Ecumenopolis and what they might be like to live in.

Istanbul wants to play in the big leagues. Last year it was the European City of Culture. It has its heart set on winning the 2020 Olympic bid. And the government wants it to be the financial centre of the region. At fifteen million, its population is twice the size of London's, and looks set to double by 2030. But there is every sign that this unchecked growth is coming at a devastating cost. Imre Azem dissects the reasons Istanbul is groaning under its rapid expansion with a striking aural and visual landscape and by speaking to a wealth of experts and developers. He also follows a group of families forced to live in tents after being chucked out of their homes, to make way for luxury skyscrapers. The lack of planning regulations means that expansion has come without adequate environmental or safety precautions. In fact, an estimated 70% of the city's 3.8 million buildings are thought to be unsafe -- and lying on a fault line. As one interviewee warns, for Istanbul the future means chaos.

Ecumenopolis Readings is an experimental video snapshot of the greater Auckland region. Footage is generated using a unique device that records video with visual input from the acceleration from a vehicle. The video with it’s accompanying track represents the hectic nature of the city, with the footage sped up to emphasise this notion.
The video has been cut in a non-linear fashion, with footage constantly switching time of day, both to emphasise the strong transition of the cuts and to represent the randomness of the traffic in Auckland. As the goal when commuting within the city is to get from A to B, at any time of day the traffic can be hectic or smooth flowing.
The physical design of the cinematic device incorporates through the influence of acceleration the concept of not only stopping and starting, but changing speeds in traffic. The use of a mirror or semi-reflective perspex in the device shows the interesting effects of perspective in the video. The parts of the frame where the reflected image is rushing past appears to be very fast, when in fact it actually moving past at the same rate as the looking back section of frame.

Ecumenopolis (from Greek: οἰκουμένη, meaning "world", and πόλις polis meaning "city"), thus a city made of the whole world; pl. ecumenopolises or ecumenopoleis) is the hypothetical concept of a planet wide city. The word was invented in 1967 by the Greek city planner Constantinos Doxiadis to represent the idea that in the future urban areas and megalopolies would eventually fuse and there would be a single continuous worldwide city as a progression from the current urbanization and population growth trends. This concept was already current in science fiction in 1942, with Trantor in the Foundation series.
Doxiadis also created a scenario based on the traditions and trends of urban development of his time, predicting at first a European eperopolis ("continent city") which would be based on the area between London, Paris, Ruhr and Amsterdam.
Before the term had been created the concept had been previously discussed. The American religious leader Thomas Lake Harris (1823–1906) mentioned city-planets in his verses, and science fiction author Isaac Asimov used the city-planet Trantor as the setting of some of his novels. In science fiction, the ecumenopolis has become a frequent topic and most recently popularized by the planet Coruscant in the Star Wars universe. In fantasy, particularly that of the card game Magic: The Gathering multiverse, the plane of Ravnica, featured in two blocks and book series, is a large plane of one massive city.

Istanbul wants to play in the big leagues. Last year it was the European City of Culture. It has its heart set on winning the 2020 Olympic bid. And the government wants it to be the financial centre of the region. At fifteen million, its population is twice the size of London's, and looks set to double by 2030. But there is every sign that this unchecked growth is coming at a devastating cost. Imre Azem dissects the reasons Istanbul is groaning under its rapid expansion with a striking aural and visual landscape and by speaking to a wealth of experts and developers. He also follows a group of families forced to live in tents after being chucked out of their homes, to make way for luxury skyscrapers. The lack of planning regulations means that expansion has come without adequate environmental or safety precautions. In fact, an estimated 70% of the city's 3.8 million buildings are thought to be unsafe -- and lying on a fault line. As one interviewee warns, for Istanbul the future means chaos.

Ecumenopolis Readings is an experimental video snapshot of the greater Auckland region. Footage is generated using a unique device that records video with visual input from the acceleration from a vehicle. The video with it’s accompanying track represents the hectic nature of the city, with the footage sped up to emphasise this notion.
The video has been cut in a non-linear fashion, with footage constantly switching time of day, both to emphasise the strong transition of the cuts and to represent the randomness of the traffic in Auckland. As the goal when commuting within the city is to get from A to B, at any time of day the traffic can be hectic or smooth flowing.
The physical design of the cinematic device incorporates through the influence of acceleration the concept of not only stopping and starting, but changing speeds in traffic. The use of a mirror or semi-reflective perspex in the device shows the interesting effects of perspective in the video. The parts of the frame where the reflected image is rushing past appears to be very fast, when in fact it actually moving past at the same rate as the looking back section of frame.

The word was invented in 1967 by the Greek city planner Constantinos Doxiadis to represent the idea that in the future urban areas and megalopoleis would eventually fuse and there would be a single continuous worldwide city as a progression from the current urbanization and population growth trends. This concept was already current in science fiction in 1942, with Trantor in the Foundation series.
